But as long as this fixes it that is fine, I can't make sense of everything.
PCM- player decodes the DTS-HD audio and uncompresses it. It then sends the uncompressed signal to your receiver.

Audiophile- player sends the DTS-HD audio to your receiver. Your receiver then has to do the decoding.

It's a problem with the 1600, NOT your receiver. The 1600 is having issues sending the DTS-HD track to your receiver. Not sure why, but it is what it is. Hopefully, with all these reports, Samsung is working on a fix.

What are the pros/cons in letting the player handle the decoding instead of the receiver?

I don't think they are so much pro/cons but rather just options dictated by your equipment.

PCM over HDMI is the optimal setup because it will give you true HD audio. So naturally that's the way to go if you have a receiver that can handle it. But those of us with older, non-HDMI receivers using optical are forced to use either audiophile or re-encode.

As you can see from the discussions here audiophile can be problematic, so most use re-encode. I've discovered that some movies (e.g. Iron Man 2 and The Matrix) sound significantly better in audiophile mode however, so sometimes I'll switch between the two modes depending on what movie I'm watching.

.

Mine breaks up occasionally throughout the disc, and gets really bad during the last two chapters. and eventually hangs during the final fight scene.
Fortunately, the package included the DVD, so I was able to finish watching it.

It was the same before, and after updating to 2.12 last week. I even exchanged the disc package at the store, but it's still the same.

Any suggestions on a different brand player that will be more reliable?

Audiophile also gives HD audio. If you're using optical, it will bitstream the lossy audio from the disc. If you're using HDMI, it will bitstream the HD audio. However, your HDMI receiver MUST have Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoders. If not, then you're stuck with PCM. The advantage of using Audiophile is that some people claim it sounds slightly better since your receiver is doing the decoding. The disadvantage is you can't get secondary audio and effect audio, which is the sound effects on menus and the sound from the PIP commentaries. Personally, I doubt there really is a difference. They're both lossless. So, if I had an HDMI receiver, I'd use PCM. But that's just me.

Hey guys, I tried updating my firmware to 2.12 last night and it didn't work. I'm not having any issues, I just like to keep my stuff up to date. I tried doing it from a USB flash drive. How do I get the update to work? It didn't do ANYTHING.

EDIT:
I plugged the USB into the front USB port. Does it have to be in the back?
Front USB port should work. I've used it on all upgrades on my BD-P1590 without issues. Make sure it's the .RUF (not the .iso) file you're trying to install via USB.

I've always had the best luck using the CD-R .iso method. And definitely do not update over the network. I've bricked a player going that route.
With this player I have never had an issue using the network update feature. But as a rule I never update just to stay "up to date" . If I have a problem first I check here to see if an update will fix it. The only other thing I try to keep tabs on is updates related to pandora or netflix which are very rare.

Neither have it. It has always been my preferred method of update. Unfortunately the latest update isn't available via the network; your only choice is CD or USB.

Is there an update after 2.12, because this is available via the network.
The website still lists 2.12 as the latest, so maybe you're a bit farther back and it's telling you 2.09 or something is available.

No, I downloaded 2.12 on Monday via the "network"
Wow, that's odd. Maybe they finally made it available on network. For more than a month after it was released my 1600 didn't see an update via network, so I finally contacted a Samsung tech and he told me 2.12 wasn't available via network and he wasn't sure they ever would.

So I wonder if there is a network update that isn't available on the site now. My player isn't telling me there's an update available and I'm on 2.12.

Well I figured out my problem... the flash drive has to be formatted as FAT32 not NTFS. It's running the update right now. *praying for a working unit after and no brick*

Wow, thanks for all the info in this thread.

Does anyone know how to post the link to the latest firmware update?

Thanks again.

Does Samsung list what issues the various firmware upgrades are supposed to fix? I have never upgraded my firmware (version 2.05) and don't have any issues that I'm aware of. I probably watch more DVDs that Blu-Ray discs but my library doesn't have Blu-Rays.

No Samsung only lists the barest of deatails about what a specific firmware will fix.

The general concensus here is that until you need to, don't change the firmware... However that being said, there are those with players that have never had significant problems no matter what version of firmware they run.

The converse to that is some have problem no matter what version they run.

Starting with v2.09 (possibly v2.08) and still with v2.12 most actions drop the HDMI signal and it takes 5-10 seconds for the Samsung TV to relock. Movie playing is fine. For example, HDMI lock is lost when starting disk, going to the menu, menu to play, and after any video stops (returning to a menu) and a few other situations.

All blu-ray disks do this (DVD's untested), and earlier firmware versions (i.e. 2.07) never did this or if it did, it was so brief to be invisible.

The System didn't change (same receiver, cables, TV, all with HDMI 1.3a). Playing a blu-ray disk from a blu-ray based PC to the same receiver/TV has no similar problems.

I haven't seen other posts with a similar problem, but perhaps the latest TVs have a faster HDMI relock or my player is not working as well as it should or this annoyance doesn't bother anyone else.

While it doesn't interfere with the actual movie watching, it is annoying. Has anyone else seen this occur with the BD-P1600?

I believe that this happens when the Hz rate coming out of the 1600 changes and your monitor (TV or projector) drops the signal and tries to reconnect. My Optima projector does this all the time. It happens when you go from menu (pushed out at 24Hz) and then switching to movie (hitting the play button) which is pushed out at 60Hz or higher. I would like to find a solution to this too. I get the blue screen for a moment, and then it pops back on.

On my old Bravo D2 DVD player I could zoom any content and it would enlarge the picture without stretching. This feature was especially helpful in some of my older "widescreen" DVDs that now just project centered in the middle of the big screen. (bars on the top and bottom) Is there any chance the new BDP1600 upgrades might include a "zoom" feature?

Hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving.
JMO but since Samsung is already selling newer models to replace the 1600, I seriously doubt that they'll spend a penny on adding a new feature to an old model.

I finally found the code to control Panasonic plasma TV's using the Samsung remote. The code number is "13". It took me forever to find it. The Samsung support didn't help one bit.

Pandora and Netflix streaming has always worked great for me and still works great with 2.12.

I just tried Sorcerer's Apprentice from Netflix. Would not play. Upgraded (begrudgingly) to 2.12 & did not help. Are some movies coming out w/different disc ? Alice in wonderland was same story. Not Blu-ray just standard DVDs.

Fantasia

I picked up the Fantastia BD yesterday and popped it in to sample it. The movie looks and sounds fantastic, but I noticed a very slight delay in the audio sync during the narrator's speaking parts. It was so slight that at times I wasn't sure if I was just imagining it, so I don't know if it's another issue with the 1600 or if the audio was overdubbed and just not matched perfectly.

I'm going to watch the DVD copy when I get a chance so I can compare.

UPDATE

I sampled the DVD in my trusty Philips DVD player and the audio sync looked exactly the same. Apparently it was just a shaky overdub job on the narrator's voice and not another 1600 sync problem.

Both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 look absolutely stunning, BTW. A must-own for animation fans.

We had finished watching a DVD (not BD) and were watching the extras. Was at the first extra menu and attempted to scroll down to the "more" selection. Cursor wouldn't move then discovered that I could not turn off the power or eject the disk. Nothing on the remote worked. I had to unplug the unit, after which it seemed fine (at least it ejected the DVD and powered down via the remote). The 1600 is about 1 year old and doesn't get a lot of use, maybe twice a month. Firmware is 2.05 (never updated) and is connected to my A/V receiver via HDMI.

A fluke or precursor to problems ahead?
My 1600 has locked up in a menu before and it hasn't lead to additional problems yet (knock on wood).

I've been away for a while since I bought a LG BD player to replace my troubled 1600. I've got a friend looking for a cheap BD player and I'm wondering if I update the firmware to whatever is the lastest version and sell it to him cheap if he'll have problems or if Samsung finally ironed out most of the issues. I say most because with new movies coming out there will always be updates, I'm more worried about all the weird stuff the 1600 used to do.
