The BD-P1500 had some issues with some discs depending on the directory structure, but that was fixed recently and they all play beautifully on that player so I think the 1600 will be fixed sooner or later.

I wouldn't chance it by waiting past the date when you could return it. Per my post, this player does in fact play AVCHD's with the current BIOS.

Has anyone had sound dropouts on some (not all) BD Live previews?

I normally use analog sound through a receiver and have had no issues at all with Blu-Ray or DVD, and Netflix including streaming HD has never missed a beat.

Some BD Live previews play with uninterrupted sound. But roughly half of the BD Live previews I watched so far have multiple occasional approximately 6 second gaps of no sound at all (HDMI and analog sound drop out simultaniously). My flash is a SanDisk Cruzer mini 2 GB USB 2.0 with nothing else on it. My internet connection is 5 mbps actual though a WET11 (wireless-b bridge), which has been faultless for Netflix HD.

Got mine yesterday and so far I've played two blu-ray disks on it - Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and The Spirit. Had problems with the menu on both of them, it was choppy, freeze/go/freeze/go/etc... Was able to get the movies to play though, and both played through just fine. I've seen a couple mentions of this issue, but didn't come across a cause or fix, anyone figure anything out? Other than that issue I'm pretty happy with it. The Netflix and Pandora streaming work perfectly.

Hmm. Am I the only one that has this player and was able to get "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" to play flawlessly?? If so, then maybe I should knock on wood.

The movie itself played perfectly, it was just the menu that didn't seem to work right.

update: I disabled BD-Live in the setup and tried The Spirit again and the menu seemed to be fine this time. Don't have Rise of the Lycans anymore though because I sent it back to Netflix already.

I also disabled BD-Live but Rise of the Lycans has problems at the menu. Interestingly, it happens at the exact same spot every time. However, no problem when it cycles through the same spot again.

mine did the same on 2 different copies.
anyone care to guess as to why?
but movie played fine, is all that matters to me.

Hmm. Maybe there's a bad batch out there.

Have you played dvd-9 avchd's? what did you have to do to make them playable?

I had the same problem with the menu, slow and choppy! Movie plays fine but i'm getting audio dropouts on blu-ray movies?

I've had my 1600 for over two months; no problems so far...
I picked up a 1600 last week. Upon arrival it wouldn't play any blu-ray discs. I called Samsung support, they told me to do a few things, wait 30 minutes and try again. Tried again and still didn't work. Samsung told me it needs service. I declined his offer and returned it to the store, grabbed another one the new one has worked perfectly so far.

Does anyone know why the BD-P1600 plays so HOT? The bottom gets so hot it could actually burn you. I've seen others mention this problem. Can this be normal?

Will this affect longevity?
I can't figure out if the BD-P1600 really upscales regular DVD's as well as it should. If you select BD-Live which is supposed to give optimum resolution, the best resolution it selects for any regular DVD is 720x480. Frankly, I have suspected that this player doesn't upscale regular DVD's as it should. In BD-Live mode I have noticed that vertical straight lines sometimes wiggle a bit (?jaggies?). I noticed also that the blacks on DVD's seem somewhat crushed, no matter what I do, changing color modes, increasing brightness, etc.
I know you can defeat BD-Live by going into the setup and can select 1080P or 1080i, but then this defeats some of the other advantages of BD-Live.

Having a large regular DVD library and frustrated with the do everything BD-P1600 player's DVD playback, I went to BB over the weekend and bought a Samsung DVD-1080p uscaling DVD player, for only $68. With an HDMI cable, it automatically selects BD-Live, and also selects 720x480 as its default for regular DVD's. However, I notice significantly better DVD playback than with the BD-p1600. Not only are there fewer jaggies, but the blacks don't seemed as crushed as on the BD-p1600. It is also a very simple to upscale to 1080i or 1080p with a simple push of a button on the remote. It defeats BD-Live, of course, but you don't have to go into a menu to do this. I found that the 1080i, for some reason, looked a tiny bit better than the 720x480. It gives back some of the remote options missing on the BD-p1600, such as zoom, reverse stepping and slow motion, etc. It has the almost the exact dimensions as the BD-P1600, upon which I am stacking the DVD-1080p. (BTW- my BD-p1600 runs cool)

BTW, I have no problem with the BD-p1600 on Blue ray. It works great. The Netflix alone is great, too.

I have mine sitting on 4 small cups so it is never sitting directly on something and air can flow under. And, yes, mine was hot enough that it would be fried shortly.

You think this player is hot, you should try the PS3.

I don't know if mine is hot, though. I never felt the bottom. But I do know that my 9 year old Sony DVD player gets really hot after about an hour or so. Since it still works flawlessly after 9 years of use, then I don't think it affects longevity.

Yeah, the PS3 is nuts. It's a great media player with one significant flaw. The fan. I got so annoyed with it, I put it in a kitchen cupboard on the other side of my home theater wall. You should hear it howl now. I have to leave the cupboard door open. I'm thinking of relocating it to a room down the hall now. I don't know how far the Bluetooth reaches.

If there is a technical way to accomplish it, it is probably in your receiver setup- I know my receiver has an option in the menus to strip the audio signal from HDMI or to pass it through untouched.

I don't have a 1600, but I do have a 1590, which as far as I can tell is essentially the same player just sold exclusively by walmart. Anyway, One thing I've found when tried to get this player to play disks burned on my PC, is that for some reason I've had no luck with any video that's 720p on either single or dual layer DVD media. I have had success with 1080i video on both single and dual layer dvd media. I've also had success with 720p as long as I burn it to BD-R or BD-RE. So, it seems, at least based on my limited experience that for some reason it doesn't want to accept 720p on dvd media. It's possible there could have been some other factor coming into play, but so far 720p seems to be the only common denominator in all the avchd disks I've burned that refused to play.

Interesting question for all of you.

My 1600 is playing discs flawlessly. No issues other than this....

When I connect my player to my 5 port Linksys switch it does not connect to BD Live. When I disconnect it from the switch and connect it directly to the wall it works fine. All other products connected to the switch (xbox, Directv HR21, Slingbox, and Samsung LN40A650 TV) are working perfectly.

Also, when I connect the player to the switch, it disconnects everything else from the network. Nothing works until I reboot the switch.

Any ideas??

I have a year and a half old 40 gig PS3 and i don't notice the fan being loud or annoying? It doesn't get real hot either, warm yes but never hot to the touch.

My 1600 does get hot on the bottom though! I plan to raise it as mentioned above and blow a small fan on it while in use.

Interesting. I cannot connect to BD-Live. I am connected to a similar Linksys switch which is connected eventually to a hacked Linksys WRT54GL router (DD-WRT v23 SP2 (09/15/06) std). On the other hand, Netflix and Pandora streaming work great.

Also, what exactly do you mean by "directly to the wall"? Surely there is a cable modem or DSL router connecting you or are you lanned to the internet somehow?

As far as disconnecting other devices when connecting to the switch you aren't plugging it in the uplink port are you? Or perhaps you have a finite number of DHCP leases (like I do) and this device takes you over the limit?

Exact same report here. I tried it with both BD-Live in the "authorized-only" (or something like that) setting as well as disabled. Both times the ...Rise of the Lycans disc got very choppy at the same disc menu spot. It eventually smooths out for a few seconds, then again choppy for a few moments. Actual playback was flawless.

It's interesting that one user didn't any problems on this disc. It may be an authoring problem with a certain batch of discs.

1) I played a number of Blu-ray discs and all played fine.
2) Loading is fast except for Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. It was having trouble displaying the disc menu. It went chuck chuck chuck and the video was choppy for a few seconds before displaying the menu. Same when go to scene selection. For my PS3, it has no problem.
3) Despite what it said, I have the same experience as others and it played the DVD+R discs that I tried. I used Philips and Memorex.
4) The picture quality is as good as my PS3. I don't see any significant difference.
5) Upscaling DVD is not very good. I will use my Toshiba XDE500 for this.
6) I haven't tried Netflix and Pandora yet as I am waiting for my wireless bridge.

The reasons I bought this is because the fan in the PS3 is kind of loud, I want Pandora and Amazon had a great deal. Of course, the 90 days labor sucks given that it is from a major company.

I will post about Netflix and Pandora when the internet is setup.

Ed.

I finally have the internet setup. I use the Zyxel P330W as a wireless bridge. I found instruction on the internet. If I didn't make a mistake earlier on, it would have taken about half an hour. I used the instruction given in
http://www.dbstalk.com/archive/index.php/t-97632.html

Pandora works well. I am not subscribing to Netflix right now. So I can't give a report.

Well, I have a linksys in wall hook up. I plug ethernet into wall plug then in my basement I go from that wall plug to my router. If I unplug the router from the wall, and just plug an ethernet cable from the wall jack to the blu ray player it works like a charm.

To check my connection I go to setup and run the network test. It says it "cannot work properly". Then when I test my slingbox, reciever, & tv, nothing is connected anymore. It's really odd.

I might be inclined to thinking it's the lease thing you speak of but when I plug only the BD player into the switch it still doesn't work.

I am about to get verizon fios when it goes to 25 down and 15 up in 8 days. Comcast might be screwing me somehow.

Either way.... It seems really weird to me.

I cannot enable Netflix video streaming through my router to my Samsung Blu-Ray BD-P1600.

Here are the symptoms:
Internet connections to Samsung test out fine.
Samsung can stream Pandora no problem.
Samsung can see my Netflix-enabled "Instant" Queue movie titles
Samsung does NOT display the movie poster thumbnail images on the selection screen.
Samsung will not stream movies; unit freezes after displaying text of movie title in center of screen and two empty progress bars ("receiving" and "quality") at the bottom.
But I CAN stream Netflix movies to my PC which is also downstream of the router.

Problem only exists when the units is downstream of my Netgear FVS318v3 router. When the Samsung is plugged directly into my cable modem, no problem.

I have upgraded the firmware of the router. I confirmed the firmware of the Samsung was up to date. I have "allowed" access to the IP assigned to the Samsung, lowering the firewall. I have done resets of the Samsung. I have POPO'd (power off/power on) every component dozens of times. I have spent hours on the phone with Samsung. I have also called Netflix. Neither will really own the problem. Samsung says I should call I have called my IT expert bro-in-law.

I'm pulling my hair out. Anyone that can solve this one is a freakin' genius in my book!

Sorry, I'm not familiar with DVD-9. I recently purchased a Sony HD camcorder, and I'm just using the software it came with to burn AVCHD's to DVD's. The software does "finalize" the disk at the end of the process. But the format simply says "AVCHD".

I have had bad burns before and those won't play if the burn doesn't go right. I could see how someone might think it's the player when in reality, it is the bad disk.

The 40gb version doesn't have the loud fan like earlier versions. I have the 40gb PS3 too, and it's quiet as a mouse.

Welcome,

Please use the 1600 thread for player issues. Sounds like it might be a problem/compatability with the router if it works with your cable modem.
