You misunderstood. I use the ZyXel as a bridge. You plug an ethernet cable in the ZyXel and it will communicate with the main router wirelessly. So it does the duty of the dongle. The only difference is it is more versatile and it an serve both the samsung and xbox.

Stupid question ...(sorry - newbie)

I'm looking at either the P1600 or P3600. I can run an Ethernet cable easily to my router so the P3600 having the wireless dongle is no big deal. What about the 1GB memory that the P3600 has? What do you use the memory for? Could I just attach a USB memory stick to the P1600 for the same result?

Are they basically the same player other than those features?

Thanks!

I believe they are the basically the same except for the two differences that you noted. You use the memory for BD-Live content and you can use any USB memory drive, just plug it in the back.

Oh I see. Thanks for clarifying that. I'll look into that.

AS ryknoll3 previously stated.

My Current Version: BEv1.25_090119_XAA
The New Version: BEv1.03_090528_BDP1600_XAA

My unit sees the newly posted version as an update, but I think I will wait also as I have not had any problems with BEv1.25. If the numbers (090119) & (090528) are the date codes then this is a new version and BEv1.03 could be a typo and should be BEv1.3. Who knows?

At this point I just wish any new firmware updates would include a menu option to turn off the Pandora screen saver. (Like the WDTV has) I use a 19" LCD monitor on the composite video output for Pandora, digital to the Onkyo. I am constantly having to disable the screen saver to see what song is playing & to move to another song in the play list. Other then that I am more then satisified with this units performance handling Netflix, Pandora, DVD & Blu-Ray Disks.

At any rate I agree with wtwieder that Samsung may have quality control issues with these players.

As an update to my original problem, (couldn't play Slumdog millionaire, could play other BD-Roms), I RMA'd the player and received a new one yesterday. It plays Slumdog Millionaire just fine. At least, if I run into this again, the firmware upgrade that's now available seems to have some promise.

I ran into the same issue last night seeing that and doing a double take. I did install the update however. Ran a few BD test discs, matrix, transformers and didn't notice any differences or problems. Will have to continue to play around with it and see if I run into any discs I can't play.

The 1600 and 3600 are the same except for a few little differences:

1. The 3600 includes the Wi-Fi dongle, which I mentioned earlier. With the 1600, you need to buy that separately for a very high price.
2. The 3600 has a 1GB onboard memory
3. The 3600 is more powerful, so loading time is shorter, even shorter than the PS3, I heard.
4. There are also a few little other extras the 3600 has, but are of very little importance to me, so I don't remember what they were.

If it has to be either the 3600 or 1600, then buy the 1600 for $200 or less. The 3600 is $400 and at that price, you might as well buy a PS3. So, decide to go with either the 1600 or a PS3, not 1600 or 3600.

Quick question for anyone who would know why this is happening. It seems that when I take a disc out and put in a new disc I will get a load sign on the player for ages and nothing will happen. When I turn the player off and back on again it works flawlessly. Any ideas what this is about? Thanks.
Try updating the firmware.

I doubt a firmware update is going to fix the problem as it sounds like a defective unit. I've taken discs out and and put new ones in right after all the time. Everything loads just fine.
Let him try updating the firmware anyway. He's got nothing to lose and while some of you here seem to believe that every problem equals a defective unit, quirks like the one described above are often corrected with a simple FW update.

Then why don't said problems happen on mine?

Let's make this clear. We all are using the Samsung BD-P1600, right?

Yes, which is now known to be manufactured with little or no quality control.

Yes, we're all using the BDP-1600 by Samsung. But from what I've read, there are different versions of the firmware, right? And the quality control at Samsung, as we all know, isn't exactly the most rigorous on the market. I've seen MANY players over the years getting their firmware updated and becoming more and more stable with every update until they had become very reliable. I personally just updated my own BDP-1600 with the newest firmware and it now plays Slumdog Millionaire and Taken perfectly, whereas before it couldn't at all. Since I didn't open the player, didn't move it, didn't unplug it and didn't do anything to it apart from changing the FW...I would suspect that did the trick.
Good news! With the updated firmware, I can now play my custom burned blu-ray discs (movies from HD-DVD that I burned onto DVD-R DL). Prior to this they would only play on my PS3.

Good morning, I picked up the 1600 on fathers day. It was an open box so i`m not really sure if it was a demo or just a return. It wasn`t a dusty unit so i`m assuming it was a return. They had it on the shelf for $129.99. Thought i would give it a shot. Hooked it up to my 40 inch toshiba 40rv525u and hooked it up via hdmi to the tv and optical to my samsung htib. Powered up all components and loaded my first bd disc which was ironman. Started loading and once an image was displayed it would alternate from a screen filled by what looked like colored snow to a blank screen and repeated this for over 5 minutes and then it would display a perfect picture. The audio could be heard perfectly in the background. Tried other discs same results. The only time this does not happen is when i try a normal dvd. Called samsung and unfortunately the rep was not very knowledgeable. Searched the web and located a firmware update. Copied it 2 harddrive and then unzipped to flashdrive. Blu ray player recognized update and installed but after install i checked firmware version and it displays version previous to update. Tried burning update to disc and attempted again. Same thing. Sees update. Asks to update and installs but when i check f/w version still displays previous version. Called samsung again and was sent to tier 2 tech. After doing the same procedure he states he will be sending a cd containing firmware update asap. I did purchase the protection plan from bestbuy for $29.95. Going to bring the player to them and see if they can solve this problem. I dont want to return and would prefer it to be repaired due to the low price i bought it for. Other than this initial loading problem it has exceeded my expectations. Netflix member and enjoy the pandora service. Once this issue stops it plays beautifully. My tv allows the tv input to be switched to the correct input when it detects an hdmi source and it works as it should when i turn on the samsung htib but only randomly when i switch on the blu ray player. Sorry to be so long winded. Thanks in advance to anyone who might have a possible fix for this issue.

No, I meant different original versions according to batches. Didn't some have 1.00 and others 1.02 or something like that?

I hope I'm not redundant with the same issue, which I believe is still unresolved: Play mp4 movies through the USB port? The 1600 has 2 USB ports, and I don't know the reason, stated the fact, that if you are using the USB port in the back with the Samsung wireless dongle you can't use the USB port in the front...which can't play movies, anyway.
I tried to load any kind of movie's formats in the thumbdrive, with no sucess, any ideas? As a final note, I was able to play Mp4 movies via thumdrive using another samsung DVD, the H1080R ...

Purchased this player about a week ago. It's my first bluray player since I purchased my 5 series samsung 40". I am very happy with the unit, load times, picture quality and features are all fantastic. DVD upscaling is fine for my purposes and I don't mind the front flap cover. One thing that I had been noticing was a very very very small amount of audio lag on bluray discs only. So small in fact that you could only notice it a couple of times during a movie. Like in Batman Returns, at the end when Bruce is hammering nails into some wood; the hammer blows were slightly ahead of the audio.

Since I have my player connected directly to my LCD tv this was a bit puzzling. I tried playing around with the default audio options on the player but it made no difference. In the end I decided to try turning on 24f mode and voila, perfect sync on all bluray discs!

Anyway, hope this helps anyone who may be noticing the same thing.

Little to no quality control?? Says who? Defects and/or damages from transportation happen. That's life.

Well, let me tell ya, I know about 15 people who own a Sony Blu-ray player (either in the form of a 350 or 360), about 5-6 who own a Panasonic and 4 others who own a Samsung. Of those 4, 3 of them had problems serious enough to have to return the player and exchange it for new one. Panny and Sony owners? ZERO problems to this day. Coincidence? I think not. Samsung is still a good company, but they have come a long way and still have a long way to go.

Probably just luck then. I've had my share of problems with Sony electronics. Not a lot, but I did have some. Not every brand is perfect.

As for Panny, I don't know. I don't trust that brand for some reason, so I never bought their electronics. But I did read from Amazon reviews that their Blu-ray players freeze a lot.

Have you see the way post office handles boxes for shipment? Have you see the way employees at Best Buy handle boxes of electronics? Well I have and lemme tell ya, it ain't pretty.

I hear ya. I do agree that boxes get mistreated. Still, while my little survey doesn't adhere to scientific protocols, it raises legitimate questions about Sam's quality. People I know all bought their players from the same local stores.

Every Samsung product I have ever bought has been complete junk except for the DLP TV I bought 5 years ago.

I'd say the firmware update for this Blu-ray player being 72mb pretty much says it all.

I get this same problem, though not necessarily from taking out one disc and putting in another. Sometimes when I turn on the player and put in a disc for first time, it won't load. Open the tray, close the tray, works just fine. I don't have to turn the player off completely, just open and close the tray.

I don't know what the issue is that causes this. It happens rarely enough for me that I don't really pay much attention to it.

I guess if you guys wanna quit buying Sammy products because of bad luck in the past, then so be it. You can probably find other just as good or better Blu-ray players from other brands, but it'll cost you. If you don't mind spending the extra dough, then go that direction.

But all I have to say is that Samsung has the BEST looking LCDs I've seen. No other brand, not even Sony, has such nice contrast, black levels, and colors as the Samsung TVs. If you want to pass on Samsung electronics such as Blu-ray players, then that's fine. But to pass on their LCDs, you're making a big mistake.
I went on to my player setup and it tells me I have the newest available firmware and no update is necessary? Anyone else getting a firmware showing here.
