I'm looking to spend ~$500.

I need audio over hdmi. I need 3 preferably 4 hdmi inputs.

So should I... get the Onkyo HT-S6100, some other system, or build my own system?

Why do you need audio over HDMI? You can't build much with audio over HDMI for $500 and the 6100 will cost you 6 bills (unless you're quick enough to snag a refurb).

Well, I have a ps3, dvr, and hd-dvd player that all use hdmi. I guess i assumed audio over hdmi would give me the best sound.

If I can get better sound for 500$ and not use audio over hdmi I'm all ears.

I'm willing to pay up to $600.

Also, I don't understand why 6100 is seemingly popular if people could get better sound when they take out hdmi support.

You assumed wrong. A receiver is for features and speakers are for sound. Audio over HDMI is a feature and all the lossless audio in the universe won’t make tiny speakers enclosed in plastic sound bigger, fuller, or clearer. You need good speakers.

The 6100 is popular because people want something they can upgrade but don’t want to spend a lot of money up front – the 6100 has a good receiver that is upgradable and has a lot of features but the speakers are shite. They then upgrade to better speakers as they can afford.

Ok, so, I'm looking at the Onkyo 606 receiver.

What's the difference (besides color) between SR606B and SR606S? The specs look the same to me but one is over 100 bucks cheaper?

Nothing. The "B" stands for black and the "S" stands for silver. Black is more popular than silver hence silver is cheaper.

The Onkyo looks better than the Sony but the Sony has your LPCM for the PS3. Have a look at the Marantz SR4002 – it can also handle the LPCM from you PS3 and it's not from Sony. The PS3 can only decode BR audio internally and send the LPCM audio signal to the receiver. It can’t send the audio information to the receiver to do the decoding.
