Toshiba HD-A2 - Aspect Ratio Question!

I'm a little confused about something that happened last night. I was watching a standard DVD, Mr. Holland's Opus, and was having trouble getting the picture to fill the screen. It was displayed in wide screen, but basically was boxed in on all edges of the screen (so it looked right but was very small).

My setup:
  1. DVD - Mr. Holland's Opus - 2.35:1 Aspect ratio
  2. Toshiba HD-A2 Over HDMI - 1080i - set to 16:9 aspect ratio (the only non letterbox option)
  3. TV - Samsung 50" LED DLP - Set to Just Scan

What was I doing wrong? I've seen previews show up this way on DVDs, but never the actual film. The only way i got it to stretch was by setting my TV to "Wide Stretch" or whatever, which increased pixellation and just looked kinda bad

Thanks!

It's your TV setting. Set it to 16:9 or Full.

when i set it to 16:9 on the TV it made the picture a little larger, but it was still boxed in on all sides.

Have you tried other DVDs? It may be a non-anamorphic DVD. If that is the case, it may well display boxed in even though it has a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. If other DVDs display properly, then it is the DVD.

After a quick search, it appears that Mr. Holland's Opus is indeed non-anamorphic. Those bars all around are normal.

I see. Never really had an understanding of what "anamorphic" meant until now... looked it up on wikipedia and it makes more sense now. I guess I've been ignoarant about it because I never ran into this before.

Thanks!

My TV has a "zoom" feature that works well with non-anamorphic programming. It's still not perfect, but better than any kind of stretch mode.

I have hundreds of DVD's and I've only run into a couple of non-anamorphic ones. The couple that I had were all manufactured before the year 2000. Mr. Holland's Opus appears to come from August 1999.

Fairly new to HDTV? I mean it does seem you would of had to deal with this on a 16:9 display with any SD-DVD player as well?

I think this is the first time the OP ran into a non-anamorphic disc on ANY DVD player - HD or SD.
