There was a glitch on the face of one of the actors on a single frame.

Also the disc is regionfree.

What are the "English Narrative" subtitles on the US disc? That's what's on by default, but no subtitles seem to pop up. The "English" setting works fine, I'm just curious what "English Narrative" is.
I would assume that it's for signs, etc when watching the English dub. No?
Was the US disc maybe encoded at exactly 24 fps instead of 23.597 or whatever it is? I ask because there seemed to be a pulsing quality in the brightness of the darker scenes that seemed odd to me.

The swdish release is encoded as 24.00fps. I don't know wether the US release is 24 or 23.976fps. Regardless, I don't think that would cause pulsing in dark scenes....(?)
I'm not sure what the effect actually looks like, but I know people have said that discs encoded at exactly 24.0 FPS can cause issues with the PS3 in 1080/24p mode. Maybe that issue is entirely different from what I think I'm seeing, but I figure it's worth a shot.

It's not terribly noticeable, but I picked up on it quite a few times in the film, so it's worth further investigation.
1080/24P could cause audiosync problems. But pulsing or whatever you saw can be caused by how the camera shutter and iris operates.

If its on by default, can it be that its no subtitles at all, since you dont need them when you have english audio.

My suggestion to those who haven't seen the movie: Don't read anything about it, and don't watch the trailer. It is a very slow paced film, but that is part of the charm. Set aside an evening when you will not be interrupted.

And don't bother with the book. I made the mistake of reading it after the movie. Something things are better left unsaid.

just because the book is much more graphic than the movie does not make it bad

it answers a lot of questions one might have after seeing the movie and it's a damn good book

Greetings,

I generally try to avoid putting details like that in my reviews. If you have read the film's description and know what its about then I would say that there are no major spoliers.

Cheers,

Actually the tape backwards seem to have been used many times, especially if you watch "Top Secret" when they are in the Swedish bookstore, not just the language goes backwards.

HHAHHAA oh yeah, forgot about that one
Gotta throw that classic in the player right now

You don´t realise it´s shot backwards until the books fly back into the bookshelfs

It was nice not to have to struggle with security tabs. Nice AQ. The interview with the director confirmed what I suspected about the ending. I wish they had included the trailer, which was extremely effective.

This movie is fully deserving of the 97% on rottentomatoes.

I can't wait for this one, it's a very rare blind buy for me, but my order at PlayUSA.com has been delayed because they're awaiting stock. Amazon don't seem to have it available either. Did someone underestimate the demand for this title?

It only made about 2 million in the US boxoffice, so maybe they did underestimate it, but on the other hand it was only shown at a maximum of 53 theaters at the same time.

When Oskar told her to come in uninvited, I thought it was cool that they approached that topic and even semi-made fun of it....Of course when they showed the consequences it still surprised me.

I hate to curse, but in this case it's worth it: This movie was ****ing awesome. I'm always wary of overhype, but in this rare case it's justified. Probably my best blind buy ever. I love the pace, storyline, characters, setting, gore...everything. The two leads are just amazing child actors. I can watch the "come in uninvited" scene over and over alone. The sadness on her face was just so believable, it was heartbreaking.

Luckily the BD is very impressive as well. Detail is great and the sound really packs a punch when it needs to!

Movieswede, just a dumb question: I would imagine the commentary track on the Swede BD is in Swedish and if so any English subtitles for it? I did see the director speaking in the extras and he seemed to be pretty fluent in English as well.

My copy of the US disc came today, but will remain shrinkwrapped until the weekend. My new Sammy 50" plasma's coming on Saturday and I want this to be the movie that breaks its cherry,(so to speak).

Welcome to the darkside

I really enjoyed this movie although it was a little slower paced than I'd expected. I was hoping the pace would pick up towards the second half but it seemed pretty consistent to me.

I also could have done without the whole $$ shot and "I'm really a boy" bit. I felt it added nothing to the story and failed and creating any additional complexity to Eli's character. OTH I loved the scene when she entered uninvited and felt the movie as a whole was pretty brilliant and a very refreshing concept

Interesting movie and a product of the "Less is more" school of film making. It is paced but held together with nicely timed wakeup scenes that keep you in your chair.

This movie left me with many questions such as; the ending suggested the boy took off were the old man left and was her new keeper, does this mean the old man was also a boy when she meet him and did she just charm the kid into his new life of service,,or did she really come to like the boy. Also, did the boy just imagine the girl and become a killer by himself?

Hakan is "The Mr Bean of serial killers"

The "famous" shoot of Eli was a doll.

They had read alot on internet forums and
* Oscars dad is not gay
* Its not a vampire in the locker room, its one of the bullies.

The writer forgot in the book that Eli must be invited in to the hospital, so he thought in retrospect that she didnt need invitation in public places. They did however add an invitation in the movie in post. And the one that invites her is Lindqvist himself. But he did say that the same thing happens in the movie when Eli didnt need an invitation in the swimminghall.

Alfredson play that angry neighbour that screams to them to be quiet.

The english audience laugh when they saw the sign on the Bathhouse spelled BAD. (Bad = Bath in swedish)

They though Eli was nasty when she used her innocense to get a victim.

They director asked the writer if Eli was in the cab at the end, and the writer replys: of course why shouldnt she be in the cab. Dir: Well maybe its just Oscar that believes she is in the cab.

Eli tries to be human, by using much more clothes during the movie.

Avoid cats in a movie, they bring more problems then they solve.

Ok this is a spoiler that is worse then a spoiler, read it only if you have to. But it gives away details that isnt obvious if you just watched the movie. It may even change your view of the movie...

The writer refered Eli as "She or He"
