Looking for a DIY book..

Thread Starter
I live in a house that has many telephone outlets daisy chained from the house connection to phone jacks throughout the house. The original cable TV wiring goes thru several splitters to TV F connector outlets in various rooms. The home network is connected using CAT-5 cables from the wireless router to additional computer locations in the house. On top of that, the Directv RG-6Qs cables from the 6 x 8 Zinwell switch all need to be re-done to accomodate recent remodeling projects. I want to rewire everything so that all systems (Cable TV, Directv, Internet and Telephone) can be re-configured or connected to future locations in a single media box. Can anyone recommend a good book for the do-it-yourselfer on what is needed and guidelines to follow. Working with the wiring is no problem as every connection in the existing system was done by me as one system after another was installed over the years.. It is now time to clean it up and plan for future growth.

I don't know if this helps, but the only book I read was the "Structured Wiring Design Manual" that I borrowed from a friend of mine (it's a little dated, and talks about particular systems in detail). It's got some decent information, but I think I got a lot more from reading info on a few different web sites, that I am going to list below:

This one of course (avsforum) - has lots and lots of great info, but you just need some time to go through it all. The search engine will have to be your friend. I have been on this site for a few months now, and am amazed at the amount of knowledge shared here, and how helpful people are.

Download the information - has lots of great info on wiring, and gives you a lot of possibilities to think about. This entire site is stellar in terms of information it holds. Again, need to spend some time going through it.

www.swhowto.com - excellent info on a DIY project, even though it was done a few years ago. Also has links to more info.

http://www.broadbandutopia.com/diyresforhom.html - Quite a bit of info here.

Good information here - check out their "Wiring Strategies Installation Guide", "Residential Installation Manual", etc.

www.hometech.com - Check out their learning center/knowledge base. (for example, http://www.hometech.com/acrobat/structured.pdf)

www.lanshack.com - has some good info on catx and fiber.

howstuffworks.com and wikipedia.org - good references in general.

This is rather obvious, but I stumbled upon most of the information by just using google!

Smart Homes for Dummies is a pretty quick read, but I'd get it from the library if I were you.

MoHitk - IE tells me that I've recently visited 4 of those 7 links

Those are all great resources, study all of them thoroughly.

SWhowto.com is a legendary sight, fantastic job documenting

Don't get Guide to Digital Home Technology Integration by Quentin Wells

Cable Installer Pocket Guide by Lampen won't help you much, but it's a great read

Spend a good few weeks or months with those links above.
