7.1 Surround Speaker Placement Advice (Photos Included)

I posted a thread earlier to the "Audio theory, Setup and Chat" asking for advice on surround speaker placement. But for more coverage, I thought I'd also post here - this is the first AVS Forum I ran across and is what led me to my recent HTIB purchase.

The original post is here:

I've attached the photos to this thread also for convenience. Basically, I'm looking for votes on where to mount my surround sides and backs, with the colored dots representing some (but perhaps not all) of the options.

Your advice is much appreciated.

I would say black dots for the SBL and SBR speakers, and try with a mock setup with the side speakers, either the red dot, or the blue dot.

I have my rear speakers mounted at ear level when standing next to them and they sound fine to me. Your rears will obviously be a little higher, so definately try positioning them (if possible) and try the setup out before you commit to mounting them.

I thought speakers were supposed to be ear level.

Thanks for the reply. I'm just not sure how I can test before I commit. Which is one reason I'm thinking of going the low tech route until I can give it some more thought and solicit more help. I'd have everything on the stands I already have. I'd drag the rears out only occasionally, hiding the wire behind the entertainment cabinet or something in the meantime. The sides would be on stands as well and normally placed at the green dot position in the side view, but with enough slack in the wire to pull them back to 90 degrees or a little more when watching a movie.

Any other votes out there? Is a ten foot high ceiling too tall to mount rear or back surrounds at that height (green dots in rear view)?

Speakers can go anywhere but should be pointed at the ear(s). A SBL or whatever tester @ radioshack will aid in this or the ones included in some HTiB.
