There's a rumor that there are serious negotiation problems (between Bayreuth and Herheim) that make the release of the 2012 Parsifal iffy. If it isn't released, it will be a major disappointment; I saw the production at Bayreuth in 2011, and it was brilliant.

By the way, the second of the two Parsifal links is to the upcoming release of the Met production from earlier this year- also wonderful, with a fine cast including Kaufmann, Pape, Matthei, and Dalayman.

...according to blu-ray.com...

...The Mariss Jansons' Mahler 2nd blu-ray has a BIG problem...

...someone, in their total stupidity, cut off the last several bars from the final movement...and, evidently, the disc is released as is...

I have the other release of this recording on Blu-Ray, "Music is the Language of the Heart and Soul." While I don't like the performance, it does not have this editing flaw.

This is an impressive production. Our OperaDou Jury recently reviewed it and although the opinions were not unanimous several Jury members liked it a lot, although several criticised Gilda for not "looking the part".
You can find the review on "OperaDou archives"

I have never been a fan of Wagner's operas. Too heavy, dark, and slow. But I recently watched the first hour or so of the Bayreuth (Barenboim) Ring on blu-ray. And it made me reconsider my view of Wagner to the point where I am considering buying one of the Ring cycles on blu-ray and hosting a showing for friends and their families (including kids aged 11 and up) who have never seen the cycle but who are also curious about it. The Bayreuth Ring seemed fine, but perhaps a bit dated in that it did not seem as vibrant (either in audio or visuals) as some other more recent opera blu-rays I've seen. The opening also seemed a bit stark, at least until the arrival of the giants. The 2012 Met version sounds from reviews like a good traditional choice, but the 2010 Spanish version sounds from other reviews like it may make good use of more modern special effects and stagecraft, which might make it more appealing to a mixed audience.

Has anyone seen these various productions such that they would be comfortable making any recommendation of the best one to invest in if I am only buying one (and planning to show it to people to convince them that Wagner can be their friend)? I am leaning toward the Met version, but that's sight unseen so any advice would be appreciated.

I ordered the Euroarts' Abbado's Mahler Sym. 1-7.

Does anyone know why there isn't 8&9 with this set?
^^ The set was issued with the recordings he had made to that point. The 9th was issued later.

I did find the 9th on Amazon, but apparently there isn't an 8th?
