HD Audio from HDTV or PS3 to Headphones

Thread Starter
I recently bought a blu-ray movie (Akira) with 192kHz/24bit/14340kbps audio, and I am wondering if there is any way I can get this audio to my headphones.

My current setup is a new 80GB PS3 as my bluray player, and I use a Sharp LC32GP1U 1080p HDTV as my HDTV/computer monitor. My PS3 is connected to my HDTV over HDMI. I was hoping to simply connect my headphones to an audio-out port on my HDTV, but my TV only has a digital audio output (TOSLINK). To my understanding connecting my headhpnes to this requires a headphone amplifier with a built-in DAC that will accept optical input, which costs ~$200.

My other option seems to be to use the old ps2-style RCA connectors that connect to the PS3. My question is though, if I use the RCA connector, will I lose the full 192kHz/24bit audio, and will it output in lower quality? Also, will just a standard 2-female RCA to 3.5mm adapter work?

Thank you for your help

I believe the PS3 can output downmixed analog stereo after decoding TrueHD (never tried, although I didn't have any problems getting it to output downmixed LPCM over the Optical out), but kinda doubt the PS3's DACs will decode 24/192 properly, if at all. Either way, its DACs kinda suck. I'd stick with the 2.0 LPCM track for Akira.
