Demodulator required for 5.1?

I have a pioneer VSX ??? 409 or 509 maybe)...

It's a few years old, and i'll get the nmbers tonight.

I am trying to hook up my sony BDP S350 (again not sure on the exact model number, but it's a B????350 for sure).

I run a optical cable from the optical out to the receiver, but get no sound. I read the manual, and it says i need a demodulator... can that be right? I'm not using a laser disc... I have tried everything on the reciever to get ANY sound... but only silence and my depression that i may have to buy another receiver. BTW the Pioneer RFD-1 costs more than most receivers i would buy, so if i can't get it to work i'm probably out of luck and stuck with the audio of the tv.

I also tried to run it through my Samsung ln46A630 TV (which has an optical in and an optical out) but when i set it to external speakers, i still get nothing.

Is the Blu-ray not putting out an audio signal that my receiver can handle? WTF?

Try playing around with the settings on your Blu-ray. Disable anything that deals with HDMI for now. Set the audio output to bitstream and see what happen.

VSX-509S is the receiver...
BDP-S350 is blu-ray.

I have set the output mode on blu-ray to optical out for preference, and "direct" for format...

Still no luck. Silence...
