Ghostbusters Wii Discussion Thread

Thread Starter
I've gotta get this one started - I'm finding it hard to believe no one here has launched a discussion around this game yet! I own the movies, I watched the cartoon, I ate the cereal (remember those crappy marshmallows?)... so hell, I didn't even blink when I reserved a copy of this sucker on pre-order from the 'big river'- it was finally time!

So to kick this off: I've wanted to be a GB since 1984... which dates me, I know, but DAMN was I excited to hear about this one coming out for the Wii. My first hopes were that the game would be a game play powerhouse, tons of protons flowing and ghost trap throwing, bustin' with my Wiimote like Egon and his proton pack.... Good graphics or not. But then I started to hope it could look realistic, more like Resident Evil 4, or even like the Conduit screenshots that have been floating around recently. We won't be getting that, but I'm coming around to Nintendo's cartoonish style. It looks like they've geared it down so that the Nintendo versions (Wii and DS) can be stylistically similar.

But Nintendo will at least have the same story line, and it sounds like Red Fly is doing a great job of incorporating the Wiimote and nunchuck into the game to give you that "WOO HOO! I just jumped out of Ecto-1 and blasted away at the library!!" effect. If the current reviews and screenshots are right, we could have a real kick-ass game on our hands. I just finished the Force Unleashed (late, I know), and to be honest I did notice the graphics weren't photo realistic... and then forgot all about that as I waved my hands around to slam and electrocute Storm troopers and Rancors back to their maker. If Ghostbusters Wii is even remotely as good in execution as it should be, the lack of photo-realism will be completely forgotten when you toss that first trap out

And now, some links:

A quick review:

and the 10 current screenshots for Wii, from Feb '09:

You know, I read an article - via IGN, I think - where Dan Ackroyd was mentioned by the developers as prefering the cartoon-ish look of the Wii edition the best when seeing the games during production (he did co-write the game's story)
Hm, I didn't even consider getting hyped for this game, but the gameplay impressions and smart visual-style decisions are good signs. And proton packs seem almost as natural a fit for the Wiimote as lightsabers. Still, I feel the impressions are discredited a bit by so heavily praising Mushroom Men: didn't that end up being rather mediocre?

Hopefully this one will be better than the first one. Anyone else hear about the "fun" you had climbing the stairs?

I never beat the NES version... I was always pizzed off about the driving... by the time I got to the stairs I was already ready to quit!

I never played the NES version, but I had it on the Sega Master System. After slipping by a strangely minaturized Stay Puft Marshmallow Man jumping about the front door of the apartment building, you had to climb a ton of stairs while being plauged by slimers and plates. Does this sound anything like the NES version? Gozer was pretty hard, but I managed to beat the game.

I am pretty excited about the new game, especially since all the major actors have provided voice work and Harold Ramis was involved with developing the story. Like Voodoozen, I was a pretty big Ghostbusters fan back in the day. This is almost like getting a third installment of the series.

Pretty much. From what I recall you drive around like mad until you can finally get to the Zuul building (which never made sense, you're fighting Gozer!). You get into the building and go up the stairs, trying to avoid the ghosts - which is impossible, so you get most of the way up, get killed and start OVER... It was a real crap shoot; you might do great and go right up, but more often than not you just died, usually near the end. If I ever got to Gozer I must have blocked that from my memory.

And now that we're having this discussion, I realize I'm screwed. Now I'll HAVE to fire the old NES version up on an emulator or something to get my fix. My videogame OC suddenly can't leave this childhood disappointment unbeaten! And then I'll move on to the GB version, maybe even look up the Master System one, too, sounds like it was a bit different.

Plus it'll be nice to have the satisfaction of beating all of these games prior to toasting the Marshmallow Man when the Wii version drops. I'm totally with you on the voice acting- hearing the original cast, the old music, the ghosts... I'll be 10 again, except this time I'll be drinking beers instead of juice boxes!
I didn't own it personally but I do remember playing this game a couple times at my friends place on the Atari. All I remember about it was the driving parts. Every time I went to his place I wanted to play this game.
The SMS version also had a map you drove around. You'd run from site to site "busting" ghost and earning money to upgrade your equipment. I remember that you could buy a portable ghost containment unit for Ecto-1 so you wouldn't have to run back to HQ and dump your traps. After enough time, the city's PKE meter would spike and you had to go to the Zuul building. Stair climbing ensued.

Yep, I can't wait to toast Stay Puft. No one steps on a church in my town! It would be even more awesome if it had four player online co-op. Probably not happening, but would still be cool.

I ain't afraid of no ghost!

I can't get the theme song out of my head now. And there were so many good lines in that movie. Especially for a 7-year-old kid!

IGN has been busy bustin' - and they likey!

wii.ign.com/articles/960/960424p1.html

Sounds like the guys over there have come around to the Wii version, they were pretty hot for the 360/PS3 versions after the demo that everyone got to play at comic-con, but if this looks good to IGN on their 100" projector screen, that's good news... plus I'm digging the idea of full co-op story mode, combined with the Wii-only multiplayer levels I think we're in for a rare win for the Wii platform.

Now I'm wondering how many gameplay hours we'll get out of this one in story mode...

Oh, and for those who haven't seen this yet, the 80's (and the majority of my Saturday mornings) have officially come back to life - there's a new Real Ghostbusters 25-disc DVD box set. It seems a bit pricey at first, but check out the firehouse box and metal tins! [/GB dork]

:crosses fingers for He-Man game:

You know, with the new GIJoe movie coming out, they'll probably get a game as well. Though it has the potential to be very good, it will probably fall into the same goo as the new Transformers game.
Man do you like Ghostbusters. Though I'd argue the 80s have been back for almost a decade now--we'll be moving on to 90s nostalgia any day now.

This game looks like it has some promise, though. Surprisingly.
Actually like the more "cartoon-y" look to the Wii version in the current IGN shots. The proton streams are cool looking, too.

I think this "port" has promise (although I guess it's not entirely a port).
I like the cartoony look also. Like Voodoozen, I was a huge fan of the animated series as well as the films. I have high hopes for this title. Might just have to pick this up at launch. Also might have to grab the animated series as well.

Not that it was ever really lost, I think the Wii is coming into its own as a platform for third-party developers. Even though there is still an over-abundance of shovelware mini-game compilations, we're finally seeing a good number of quality titles as well.

Ha, well, I agree with you there insofar as something that was never really there in the first place can't really be lost. But I do think there's reason to be cautiously optimistic about third-party games on Wii as of late. Not only is MORE stuff coming out, but developers seem to finally be getting a grasp on how to approach the Wii as a platform--as its own entity rather than the 360's retarded little brother. Stuff like stylized art is a huge step in the right direcion.
Well, as some of the 3rd parties who have been/become more serious w/ Wii development have claimed as of late - it took devs some time to both see where Wii was headed commerically & what can truly shine while running on what Wii has under it's hood.

Of course, Wii users need to go out & actually buy the quality games in order to keep 'em coming. If this turns out to be a quality game (looks promising so far), I will buy it.

LOL, same here, but I have high hopes for the new one. Nintendo is usually good about remaking of their classic games.

Double Yup! Especially right about the stylized games, they're an especially cool element since we can't have full photo-realistic graphics for now. While I'd love to see games that are fun AND visually stunning (again, look at RE:4, Tenchu 4, Conduit), with both DS(i) and Wii looking to share the titles, graphics take the beating for consistency's sake. And we ain't gonna be gettin' anything better until Wii^2, apparently...

This is a great point on both levels- on one hand you've got great household penetration but not the default base of gamers, so devs have been moving towards the more moderate crowd, the older gamers and the very young... not good for producing hardcore or involved games, but slowly even those gamers have been coming over for one game or another, mainly for the interactive gameplay.

Which is why your point 2 is good as well: if folks don't 'get' the M rated games and non-minigame party-fests, we'll all be faced with "Mario's Frisbee Golf 17" or "Kirby's Same-Lame-Game" ad infinitum...

I would go for the SMS version. It was much better than the NES version. The graphics and gameplay are much better. But the basic game itself is similar. Just make sure if you're playing the SMS version that you but the ghost bait before the PK meter goes into the red.

The Angry Video Game Nerd did a three part series on the Ghostbusters games. Check it out. www.cinemassacre.com

AWESOME! I want to be an angry video game nerd...

no, wait. I don't... Scratch that. But funny as hell! I ended up watching several of those videos before I had to quit- did anyone catch the bible games he reviewed? GREAT!

YIKES!

I did the unthinkable and loaded these two up, NES first then SMS... SMS was WAY better graphically, which made me question how Sega lost the war- literally "how did I not know this existed when I was 8? I played what?!". I'll still go back and beat both, now that I know they exist, but for those of us who haven't seen the other version, here's a quick review

So the fact is that we get a cool game with the 'correct' Ghostbusters... and it's supposedly cannon, in line with the rest of the films + etc.

Cool.

But would you want to watch another movie now NOT starring the original 4...

A linky

Could this be as bad as "Beverly Hills Cop 3" (IMHO)? Someone make sure John Landis is busy...

Sega lost the console battle because Nintendo strong armed many developers into exclusively distributing games on the NES. Sega also forged a partnership with Tonka for distributing the SMS in North America that proved disastrous. I had a SMS before I had a NES, and there was a lot of good games on the system. I'm glad that the Wii VC features SMS titles.

Anywho, I've thought about pre-ordering Ghostbusters. I've been saving up for new front speakers, but the WAF on that acquisition is low. I might be able to sneak a new game or two under the radar though...

How can you not after watching THIS clip!

I get that it's Xbox and not Wii, but imagine the sheer awesomeness of this if you were actually throwing your trap, wielding a proton pack...

When will someone leak Wii footage? The wait is killing me

[EDIT]

OK, a real update!

I somehow missed this Wii gameplay vid before, but for all to see, here's some nice teaser footage of the Wii version, with commentart from the RedFly team lead. This is from December, one can only imagine what tweaks and improvements can do by launch. I'm actually loosing my previous hesitations; the destruction is great, and the graphics aren't bad... a little 'toony, but overall quite nice. I like the great lighting effects, and the color scheme feels like Ghostbusters.

Always trust the opinion of Elwood BLues & the man who invented the Bass-O-Matic.

Although, it is the same guy that also thought a Blues Brothers sequel sans Belushi was a good idea....so....

I'm liking it - the GB logo on a black background was a little spartan for me, so this, like every new news nugget, is a welcome update...

but I'm not sure what it means from a gameplay/story standpoint.

http://www.vgboxart.com/forums/showt...400&replies=18

IF I'm to believe my eyes, then
 • we get the same marshmallow man
 • Wii slimer is drunk? And how did ET's hand get in there?
 • Dolores Umbridge and Rosanne had a baby that has become a phantasm in the GB world
 • 'Nemesis' has morphed into an eyeless, 3-toed version of himself on PS3/360. Very original.

Having said that, IMHO the Wii version has the best chance of being awesome- the stylized graphics are looking more appealing all the time... seriously, when I play 360 or PS3, their graphics are unreal, but I notice everything that's not perfect, from jaggies to color issues to over sharpness. You can't (currently) make a perfect game, and even with what would appear to be almost photo realistic characters, I bet that the button mashing versions will loose that spark that made the movies and cartoons so awesome... i.e. humor and self actualized 'camp'.

But I digress... anyone gotta thought on the design? Are you more or less afraid of the game sucking now that images are surfacing?
