Is it worth upgrading my PS3 for a player that does HBR?

I have a PS3 that I love for games, slideshows and, most importantly, 1080p/24 video and strong sound from my BR discs. I think it's a great, totally reliable unit, and I'm very happy I got one way back in the day.

The only thing I don't love is that I have no HBR and have to get my HD audio (TrueHD, DD+, DTS-HD and DTS-MA) from decoded LPCM. I now have an Onkyo 886 pre/pro that can accept HBR, and I had always read that LPCM from my PS3 was effectively identical to HBR. But lately I've been reading threads that raise some doubt on that score. People claim to have done side-by-sides and found that (controlling for volume) the PS3 does not sound as good as a stand-alone player.

Given how much I've invested in my system, I need to know whether my discs would sound better if I plunked down a comparatively small $300 for a Panny 35. What do you think?

I have a PS3 and a Panny 35. Currently the Panny 35 is in my HT bitstreaming the audio to a Pio Elite 03 for decoding. Previously I had the PS3 sending PCM and I hear no difference.

I own a PS3, Panasonic BD35, and a Samsung 1500, and after level matching, I can hear no real discernible difference between decoding in the player and outputting LPCM vs bitstreaming to a receiver.

If you like the PS3, I would keep it. I prefer the XMB menus to any standalone I have owned (Blu-Ray).

The only thing that I have noticed is that the PQ on the Panasonic BD35 is slightly better, especially for upscaled DVDs vs the PS3.

Thanks for the input and the poll responses! This is giving me some comfort that I don't need to shell out for a standalone player. Anyone else who has done a side-by-side, I'd love to hear from you.

Btw, I never put a DVD into my PS3 because I have a Toshiba XA2 , and I'm very happy with that.

I've got a ps3 and sammy 2550. I've had the 2550 for much less time, but don't notice any differences in quality.

Of course, now that I'm bitstreaming from the 2550 the HD lights light up on my Onkyo 876
