New subwoofer advice

Hi guys

I have been using a CSW BassCube 10" for several years, but apparently it has died. I also have CSW "Ensemble" front/rear/center. My receiver is an Onkyo SR-604.

1. Your budget. $300 max.

2. Size requirements/limits. Prefer 18" cube, but flexible.

3. Room dimensions. 12x15 with a large rug (60% coverage) over hardwood floors.

4. Primary uses. 30% video (5.1), 60% music (stereo), 10% gaming.

5. Listening habits. Hmm, well I hadn't noticed that my old sub had died. So obviously my bass needs are moderate! Amp is 100w and I don't often crank it. For music, I want a nice bass presence, but nothing heavy. For movies/games, I want to feel it, but don't want to scare the dog.

6. Appearance requirements. Matte Black finish preferred, or veneer.

7. Timeframe. Need it now.

I have done a bit of research and am leaning towards the Polk PSW-10 (which is also on sale at Crutchfield).

Thanks in advance!

Bump. Any better choices than the Polk?

An eD A2-300 is pretty close to your maximum budget. It's $350.

But then you require a 10-inch cube. Good subwoofers that small are definitely hard to come by in your price range.

Thanks for the reply. I made a mistake in listing my size requirements. I thought "same form size as BassCube 10" but wrote "10 inches". The actual size of my old sub is probably 15" square, and I can go a bit bigger than that.

I have done some more searching and thinking, and would further amend my listening needs as 60% music/30% movies/10% games.

I also see that the Polk is only modestly regarded on this forum. Many seem to think that the tSC ASW-10, HSU STF, or Velodyne VX-10 are a better choice.

I also read universal praise of the PA-120, but that seems like overkill for my room.

Among those I think the PA-120 would give you the best for what you want to spend.

There's no such thing as subwoofer overkill. Besides, wouldn't it be better to know that your subwoofer is filling up the room with bass easily, rather than worrying about whether or not you might be overdriving your subwoofer?

Hmm, true up to a point I suppose. OTOH, it's a bit like saying "Everyone should drive a Ferrari. People who don't want to go fast can just drive slow".

After reading more threads and sites, I have narrowed it down to three (and also raised my budget slightly):

* PA-120: seems like great bang for the buck. But I'd have to wait several weeks.

* HSU STF-2: gets great reviews for music.

* tSC T250: newer design, but company is well regarded here.

Which of these three would you guys recommend? And while I appreciate blued's help, I welcome input from others, too

Hsu's, according to the numerous threads I've read, handle music well.

As for the tSc, I have an ASW-10, I am not sure if that's a fair comparison with the newer series of subwoofers they have. But I find the ASW-10 to perform fairly well (especially for the $100 I paid for it).

As for the PA-120, you can also try looking at the dedicated thread for that subwoofer.

In the end, it's really pretty much up to you. I honestly don't remember how I decided on getting eD after reading and reading many threads here.
