For Colour/Contrast/Brightness i can recomend you our German specialists on this area:

Burosch-Display-Tuning

Its a .iso file. If you have Mac OS: Inside this is a VIDEO_TS folder this you should burn on Video-DVD. Or if you have Windows you should download an iso-burn-software (no idea what) or simply use NERO Burning.

search for burnaware ..great free burning tool. Does everything you would need from Nero without the price tag or the HUGE install.

Awesome! Thanks for the recommendation... I've burned & used the Monster ISF Calibration Wizard so far... although, it doesn't really go into much detailed settings and it didn't change much from what I had set it at with my own eyes...

I use a Mac as well... but I have an original MacBook, so no DVD burner for me! LOL I have to use my PC for that... and I already have Nero, so I'll just use that. Thanks again!

Sorry to see so many people unhappy. I've had no real issues with the TV. I have an SQ02 panel if that makes a difference. I use the TV for HD FiOs, XBOX 360 & PS3 for blu-ray. All connected via HDMI except for the XBOX (component) When watching FiOs, it really depends on the channel. Gaming seems fine except for some slight color weirdness. mostly in reds. The blu-ray from the PS3 is by far the best.. I'm absolutely amazed.

I'm starting to think that a lot of us including me are looking for problems and once you get it in your head, it's hard to make those imperfections go away (aside from the sets that are actually bad of course.) My wife thinks it's the greatest looking TV on the earth, but If I ask her to really pay attention the the Red while I'm playing NHL 09, she'll probably start busting out the magnifying glass too. The PQ is different on each of my inputs and I think that is also something to keep in mind. I would of thought of this TV as just good for the $ if I did not have a PS3.. That's what really put in the the great category for me.

The Digital Video essentials kit.. it's the best one out there..but it's a pain in the A** . It takes forever and some of the tests have poor or no directions. But it does the job. I used it for my old tv and when I get about 2 hours of free time I'm going to use it for the B550.. ugh.

Yeah, I've heard there are no instructions on the HD side, making it for a long, confusing process, but I'm willing to give it a go at least! I'm gonna have to wait on it though, since it's too big for me to download/burn (can't burn DL-DVD) so I will have to try and find a good deal on it through ebay or something. Thanks for the vote on this one though... so far I've tried the Monster ISF Calibration Wizard and I wasn't very impressed with its lack of settings covered... a little too basic for me...

Is it in English? Because if not than it's going to be a bit confusing to navigate.

I haven't burned it to DVD, but what I can gather from playing it on the computer is that it uses images (instead of video) and there is no audio so you have to use the accompanying guide that is in PDF, which is in German... but, you can always use a translator. Otherwise, it really only seems to touch up on the basics...
You are right, this are basic setzings. For more advanced setzings you have to pay up to 99 EUR for the Blu-Ray. See www.burosch.de

But this basic settings are the most common and the most important.
Or if you want to try FullHD 1080p Burosch-JPGs download this

Unfortunately my Samsung BD-P1500 doesn't take JPGs, so I burned them with iDVD (or other DVD authoring software also possible); but after burning they are no more 1080p.

But with your B550 you simply use the USB-port

In this pakage are more advanced colour and sharpness settings

Try this too!

And another one test, this time in English

So the TV will be picked up at the end of the week probably and I will take a look around at the new Toshiba that seems to be a win for everyone, but I am also open to other brands as well.

Hey, i have the LNXXB530 and while playing Gears of War 2 during a dark scene i noticed this "Blur" you mentioned. I was wondering what would you recommend for me to show the tech so that he can really see the problem? What did you use to show the person who came and replaced your panel?

Well, any area that has lots of shadows and dark walls. What I did was jumped into horde mode on causal and loaded up the Maps RUINS and STASIS I believe. and just span the camera around and move around. In the dark areas especially further away, the blur and movement is pretty bad, kinda looks cloudy and the walls seemed as they moved? Very distracting. SD channels as well with someone wearing a black shirt or something you would see the blur and weird hazy effect it created when they moved..sometimes was noticeable on their faces. That's what I did...it was really bad.

He replaced the panel but the blur was reduce but still there and distracting...I ended up returning my B550. Hope that helps, let me know if there is anything you want me to try and clarify.

Hey guys, just want to ask, what kind of video processor does this tv has? and do you think is similar or is it better than the DNIe pro of the A650? i am between this 2 sets and want to know that.

Thanks
You should turn DNIe off for a natural colors and grayscale

So I got myself a Samsung LN46B550 about three weeks ago. For the most part I am very happy with the TV, however lately I have been noticing ghosting and blurring on the set, particularly in dark scenes in Blu Ray movies and while playing FPS (COD4) or third-person shooters (GOW, RE5/4) on my 360/PS3.

After reading various postings on AVS, including this one, they all seem to have similar complaints about the other B series models (B530, B650, etc.) I also looked on the LN40B550 topic and there were alot of complaints of similar issues (ghosting/blurring, particularly during dark scenes).

Now my question is for those who would know, is this something that can be fixed with a firmware update or is this an issue where specific parts would need to be replaced on the set? I would like to keep the TV, I really like it's design and for the most part the picture looks great, it's just that I tend to play alot of FPS and Third-Person shooters and while the ghosting doesn't make the games unplayable it is noticeable to my eyes. The same during dark scenes in movies (Hellboy II, TDK).
I haven't noticed any unusual ghosting or blurring in Live HD, DVD, or Blu-Ray connected directly to the 40B550 via HDMI or Component Video. I will see what happens when I connect it through the new AV-254 this weekend. Highly compressed media like DivX have some expected artifacting, but even that is not unwatchable.

Guess you guys are more critical than I...
I've had the LN40B550 since 03/28/09 and i must say that i haven't run into any problems with the picture so far, in fact the PQ look even better now --i guess it need a breaking in period. Didn't have a Blu-Ray player but on all my upconverted and Progressive scan dvd-players with HDMI, the picture looks stunning especially on the Oppo. The only player that i can't get to work right with the Samsung is a Yamaha upconverted player As far as ghosting, i haven't even seen it. Tested on the Xbox 360 and it looks perfectly fine too. The ghosting and blurring that some people seen could have been caused partly by the dvd player itself ????

If the problem is what I think it is (excessive panel overdrive) I'd say NO. All other displays that have had this problem needed new revisions.

Check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljRCxlf0njk Same problem on a Dell LCD that uses a Samsung panel. Do like the rest of us and return it. I've owned the B550 AND A550 and the A550 is a better TV hands down. If you want a cheap TV and want a Samsung get last years models. I got an A750 (A550 was better but still had uniformity issues) it might be more expensive then the B550 but I have no doubt it will blow it away if even it's cheaper sibling can.

long time lurker here.

just got LN37B550 with an A002 panel and i can confirm that every flaw that's been mentioned about B550 in this thread is more or less true no matter how much you want to ignore them.

it seems perfect at 1st after some basic calibration (especially without reading the local reviews ha), solid design, good colors (black included) and picture but the more time you spend with it the more obvious it becomes. that ghosting/blurring issue is rather strange and it does tend to appear in darker scenes but sometimes you can notice it when the scene is not dark or that fast at all, it just loves certain circumstances i guess. the more stuff you watch the more you start to notice it and expect it which makes the viewing experience very uncomfortable. the effect can't be described as ghosting per se since you don't see any bad trailing or anything, you just know it's there and it annoys you to no end. the shimmer is harder to catch but it's there as well.

i want to return it and my other option is 37A550 which is harder to find these days and the price is even higher than on B550. i didn't find anything about blurring/ghosting on A550 and everybody in this thread suggests to get it, i guess i just need another affirmation that i'll be happy with A550 regarding all these issues with B550.

one other thing about A550, i read somewhere that 37 version never uses the S panels and the chances to get the C panel are much higher. so any further comments, especially from people who picked A550 over B550 are appreciated.

I don't know if it the 'blur' issue the others are noticing or is it something else, can anyone help??

I bought the samsung ln46b550 TV recently and hooked it up with an HD box from comcast (using an HDMI cable).

When i am watching the NBA games on ESPN HD channel, the darker parts of the screen look a little grainy, i am not sure if grainy is the right word, but i don't know how else to describe it.

For example, when ever they show the crowd (and the lights are off on the crowd) the picture is grainy. The picture looks great on the brightly lit floor. When they show a close up shot of someone shooting the free throws, the crowd in the background looks a little grainy.

Does anyone else observe this? Is this common? Could it be a problem in the source or a problem with my TV?

I have AA01 panel, not sure if that matters.

I gota 40" A550 S panel and it was very good, much better than the B550. No motion problems, contrast is pretty much the same or a little less, more options/inputs and it doesn't wash out on angle like the B550 (B550 was an "A" panel) Mine was way brighter on the bottom than the top so I ended up returning it and went for an a750.. other than that it was a pretty nice TV, recommended for sure.

I just filed a complaint at BBB on Samsung. After all of these issues they wouldn't fix it or give me a refund. I keep getting sent techs who have no clue on what i'm talking about than they write on the report that my TV is working "up-to-spec" so Samsung won't do anything.

I just have to wait and see what happens.

Good luck Even the store gave me a funky look when I wanted to return it and told them the reason. They didn't seem to believe me but I was within my 30 days so they had no choice.

When they say "up to spec" it's just a fancy way of saying they can't fix it. Pioneer did the same thing with the Kuros and their "problems" (buzzing, dirty screen effect) I bet they will make a new revision or something and just keep quiet about it. I can't believe they will keep selling them like this.

Hi, I have a b551 of 37" and I would like to know the perfect calibration.

A greeting and thanks.
I just got the LN52B550 this morning from Amazon. I was getting worried from reading this thread but I'm pleased with it. This is my first HDTV, my in-laws have an A550 that I'm intimately familiar with and I feel its comparable. I have an SS02 panel and upgraded to the 1013 firmware.

I think the main problem is the default settings it come with. As many have noted the colors come WAY off, with way too much green and reds looking orange. Here's my settings for what its worth. I have a Tivo HD and FIOS, and an xbox 360 via HDMI

Mode: Standard
Backlight: 10
Contrast: 95
Brightness: 45
Sharpness: 100 (LOL)
Color: 65
Tint: G35/R65

Black Tone: Off
Dynamic Contrast: Off
Gamma: 0
Color Space: Auto
White Balance: All 25
Flesh: 0
Edge Enhancement: Off

Color Tone: Normal
Digital NR: High for FIOS, Off for Xbox - This made a big difference w the worming
Film Mode: Off
Game Mode on for Xbox 360

Games look great on the 360 but upscaled DVDs look terrible, even without game mode on. I guess that's to be expected. I saw a lot of sprites. I'm going to hook up an upscaling DVD and see how that will hold-up until Bluray arrives.

I bought an LN46B550 from Newegg on 5/9. I didn't get a chance to install it until last weekend to watch the NCAA Lacrosse Championships. After getting over the initial "wow" of the great picture, I noticed that the picture has a horizontal jump or shudder to it. It gets better as the TV gets "warmed up"...after a couple of hours of being on, the shudder happens only every few minutes. When it's first turned on the shudder happens every 10-15 seconds and is pretty annoying. It's very noticeable in action sports but I just looked at an animated tv show and it's pretty noticeable there too. We set up a service visit last weekend but they can't come until next week. If they don't fix it on the first try, it's going back to Newegg.

It has an AA01 panel, upgraded firmware to 1013, Time Warner HD DVR/Cable Box. All connections through a Sony AVR via HDMI cabling. We had a Sony LCD projection TV hooked up identically before the Samsung and there was no shudder or jumping so I'm pretty sure it's the TV and not the peripherals.

I wonder how many people have bought one of these and haven't had any problems...one of the issues with these types of forums (I spend a lot of time on the Acura Forum), is that you tend to only hear about the problems.
just spend more time with it watching different content, it's quite obvious what's wrong with those sets the more stuff you go through.
So I tried to hook up the cable box directly to the TV via a different HDMI-in port. Still has the shudder. When I connected the cable box directly to the TV via component cabling, the shudder disappeared. I did notice that the HDMI-in ports seem very loose in the TV. I have a video streamer connected through the AVR via HDMI and it doesn't seem to have the same problem, but none of the video content I'm streaming is native HD. I'm wondering if the HDMI-out on the cable box could be bad, but we didn't have the problem before...

I appreciate everyone's comments that the custom color space option in the A550 similar to the A650 is not available in the B550, at least in the user menus. Has anyone gone looking in the service menu to see if the full RGBCMY color controls are present there? If so, are they configurable separately per source, or just one set of color controls for all sources?

Thanks,

We have 2 HD Cable boxes, so I decided to swap them out to finish trouble-shooting before Factory Service arrives tomorrow. Horizontal jumping or shudder problem solved. What's really strange is when I put the "bad" box in the basement with a 2nd Gen LG LCD and hooked it up using an HDMI cable that was part of the original "problem" setup, there was no repeat of the horizontal jumping or shudder. ?!?!?!?
