as far as the upgrade site is concerned, is that a legitimate panasonic site? I don't know what or who else would go through the trouble of creating such a site for something like that, but i would rather be safe than sorry.

It is a legitimate site -- always has been. It is a Panasonic web site.

The BD60 just dropped to $185.

so i got my 65s1 ordered from amazon. I am sorta regretting not getting the 58v10 now just because of the 24p mode.

I have a ps3 I will be pumping through the set for dvd/bluray movies (im a xbox 360 fan, so all my gaming is done on that).

Will the lack of the 24p mode render my bluray movies unwatchable? or is that just some marketing scam to get you to upgrade to a better set?

I really wanted a 65" mostly for gaming and for HiDef sports watching... so I am definitely good there, just the bluray features in 24p mode have me worried..

oppinions?

Every movie you've watched at home on a television set has been at 60Hz, which is what the S1 displays at. So unless you've considered your movies unwatchable all this time, you have nothing to worry about.

I paid 2600 at BB but haven't gotten delivery yet so I could get the price matched if I knew how he did it.

I wonder if this will fix the HDMI issues. My parents have an S1 and they get occasional HDMI handshake errors with their Bluray player and cable box.
Last night I watched "Dark Knight"(blu-ray) on my 50S1 with a new Samsung 1600 blu-ray player, Samsung HT in a box receiver and a new Monoprice($4) 6ft. HDMI cable. Using CNET's settings on the 50S1. All I can say is WOW!! What a disc, what a movie, great soundtrack and surround effects. Great disc to really show off your equipment. What an enjoyable experience. I want to hug the Panny everytime I walk past it.

Have you S1 owners done the firmware update?
Seems like a complicated process regarding the SD cards.

Len

Well, I got up the nerve to do the firmware update on my 50S1, and it went really smooth. The instructions supplied at Panasonic's site are right on.
Maybe now i will get up the nerve to do the service menu offsets soon

Where did you see a firmware update for the 50S1? I only see one for the 42S1. And if there is one, what exactly did it correct?
Just Spoke To A Panasonic Tech Said The Upgrade For The p42s1 Was For Audio Drop Out.

Click on the link below:

http://www.techtraining.panasonic.com/firmware/

Then click on "Plasma TV"

At the top of the list you'll see model "TC-PnnS1".
That is for all S1 sizes.

I had the audio dropout issue.

I see two updates for the 42S1. One for HDMI audio and one for scan improvements. I am wondering if I should apply both, or if the later one (the scan update) includes the previous one (HDMI audio).
How do you check the firmware version on the S1?

IMO you need to do both. The earlier one is for multiple models.
The later one is for the 42S1 only.

I would do them in the order they were released.

How do you check the firmware version of the S1? Does the HDMI audio update get reflected in the version number? I assume that the newer sets would already have the updated firmware installed at the factory.
To see the current version information, select ABOUT from the SETUP menu.

On my set (a 50X1) the 'Version' is 0190-0310. To get the TV version from this, read every other number from left to right starting from the second digit. Ignore the dash. On my set, it would be 103 or version 1.03. To get the software version do the same from right to left. On my set it would be 109 or version 1.09.

It's been this way for Panasonics for at least the past four generations.

Hmmm.... I looked for my software version and it said "0150-1420", so it looks like I already have 2.15 and don't need to apply that one. Although I haven't noticed the audio dropouts, my wife says it does happen when watching SD content. I don't watch SD much, so I'll have to try it and see if I notice it.

Does anyone know what the "Mandatory Scan" update is supposed to fix? I looked in the files contained in the update and did some searches, but haven't found anything.

Actually, I really paid 30 more than him with the 10% coupon, but the tax brought it to 2600 so it wasn't much different.

right now we're watching a lot of HD content on networks, where sports and primetime content is displayed in 16:9 on FULL mode, but then commercials and also local content (ie, news) is 4:3.

my concern is in HD, the 4:3 bars are black and cannot be changed (while they can be gray in SD 4:3 content). it's already getting old hitting the Format button on the remote to stretch it out when necessary... am I missing some feature that can either automatically stretch out content, or at least allow me to make the HD 4:3 bars gray?

on two sidenotes, I used sadmakers calibration results in the service menu and seems to have really cleaned up the colors big time, thanks! and glad I stumbled across the 42S1 firmware upgrades, thanks again!
I've got the 46S1 that's been broken in and has the offset adjusted but I'm still noticing skin tones seem to have a greenish tone to them. Not knowing much about calibrating TV's, is there an adjustment I should start with (and which direction should I go) to help with this?

Followed the instructions on Panasonic's site. Used an SD card that has played photos on the TV many times. When the card is inserted . . . nothing.

Did you use the formatting software they recommend to format the SD card prior to loading the firmware update?

Check the current rev of the firmware on your tv. If it is the same rev as you are trying to install, I believe the tv will ignore the SD card and treat it like a slide show...

Just wanted to say to anyone that's on the fence about these plasmas -- don't worry, just get one.

I've only had it (TC-P42s1) for one week, and it's already the best-looking TV I've ever owned, especially at this price level --- and I still have all the settings reduced for break-in.

I can't even imagine how good it's going to look when I can really crank it up...
