just mix up your content, try not to watch letterbox movies for a while, but if you do, make sure to watch full screen for a little while after.

Thanks for input.

They only affect brightness level not necessarily adversely but changing G-CUT will move the brightness level of the low-end of the greyscale.

Yes definitely start at YOUR original values and apply the new offsets. These new offsets are for each of the three color temps, I believe you press the 7 button on the remote to switch between color temps in the service menu.

My other settings using these offsets are as follows:

Contrast +68
Brightness +63
Color +40
Tint +8
Sharpness +24
C.A.T.S. Off
Video NR Off
MPEG NR Off
Black Level Light
HD-Size 2 for blu-ray and 1 for everything else.

Here is what CNET says in the FAQ on adjustments.....but I have gone in the SM with past models and suspect I will when my 58S1 is broken in.

My TV's user-menu adjustments are inadequate. Can you tell me what adjustments to make to the service menu?
Nope. We no longer use the service menu--which is a hidden menu used by manufacturers and professional calibrators, and accessible typically via a secret code--in our calibrations. We recommend against users accessing this menu as well, since accessing a service menu can void the TV's warranty and one wrong move can brick a TV (trust us on that one). That's also why we harp on available picture settings in our TV reviews, and laud TVs that have detailed settings for things like color temperature.

Driod6, I have been trying the new offsets and calibration between cinema mode, and custom mode. There is some sort of change in black or gamma between the two. the best way to see it is on a black suite on a man on tv, like a football pre-game show. Going back and forth from custom and cinema (or cinema and game) with both modes calibrated, you will see that black suites tend to show up a bit better on cinema mode, and on custom/game, they seem to be a bit more jet black.

Which is correct??

I've only briefly messed with the custom mode and I think the gamma is higher in custom and Cinema is closer to 2.2 which is what I prefer. I don't want say which gamma setting I think is proper because I've seen many a fights over that subject here on AVS.

Thanks. I tried that gamma test on pixar films THX calibrator....the one where you "squint" away the grey boxes inside the different colored bars. Both cinema and custom had very close results, with cinema maybe performing slightly better.

Your report showed 2.18 gamma on cinema mode with your offset and calibration, and thats good enough for me.

Did you see Jborch's pictures of the dark knight blu-ray, using Droid6's offsets and calibration:





Its really hard to get good pictures of a tv, and preserve the actually look of the calibration, but I think these came out really well.

My new set has came. Put in the new ice age blue ray. WOW this looked great just out of the box. I'll read up and see what else I can do but so far I'm very happy.

Hey guys, how do you enter the SM?? I'm going to e-mail my buddy Droid's settings for the SM and have him use Cinema-Normal settings but I/he doesn't know how to get into the SM. I'd look but I gotta be at work in 30 mins. Thanks!


PS- Should the tv be off while entering the SM?

Just entered sm for first time, trying to enter droids offsets. When arriving at Rdrv, the offset shows +7. However, mine starts at FF. The vol+ wont do anything, just the vol-. It is as if it is at the end of the adjustment limit. What to do? Just leave it unchanged? Please help!

I am a little confused about the 58s1 blacks? I can get a good deal on the 58s1 but I may pass on it if the blacks are not much better the LCD blacks.

That was the first calibration I had done and subsequently I found it was better to adjust the red and blue cuts and drives to minimize errors in green but I hit the ceiling on my red drives so then I had to adjust green drive also. Cuts and drives play off each other so you can see trying to maintain the position of my green cut didn't allow for subtraction of the red and blue cuts which were higher in my last offsets are offset by the changes in the drives.

hey guys, i can see what appears to be diagonal lines on my screen, mostly noticeable on a white parts of the screen. i thought its was the signal but i see it on, cable, xbox, blu-ray. its not a huge issue but it is annoying. anyone know what it may be? i have been in the service menu, is there something i could have accidentally changed?

On another subject -- gamma. The shape of the gamma curve is more important than the average value. An average gamma value can be 2.22, for example, and look terrible because the value at 10% is 1.11 and at 90% is 3.33. A nice flat gamma is what is desired and on the Panasonics that don't have a gamma control, the only way to vary it is by using different picture modes. Therefore, it would be helpful, for each calibrated mode, if you include a report showing the associated gamma curve.

Finally, for this post anyway , Panasonic recommends a maximum value of FCh for any DRV.

I'm going to go back in and see what I can do with the all drive setting in the SM to alleviate hitting the ceiling on there drives so there will be more settings to come (I thought I was done ). Yeah when I test for gamma I get a drop at around 70 and a spike at 90 IRE but the rest is quite close to 2.2. Do you think there is anything I can do about the drop and spike in the gamma? You can't see the variance on the curve diagram just the flat line diagram.

Those small variations in your gamma curve are normal and will not have any deleterious consequences on the picture quality. I think the words 'spike' and 'drop' are a bit harsh. It's more like just small deviations.

Okay. I'll wait until you post the final calibration before I make a change to the list.

How are the blacks on the 58S1? How is the light level? I’m looking at a 58’’ and the 58v10 is about $1000 so just wondering if it’s worth it.

No matter what I do, I can't seem to achieve the light level that the G10 can achieve. I have a 50s1, father in law has a 54g10, and there is quite a difference. When both sets were calibrated, reguardless of picture mode, sm settings, or calibraiton, the G10 simply looks brighter. (not brightness, light output i suppose).

As I said when I first got the S1, back on page 93, the S1 just seems dark, no matter what I do.
