no cable box just strickly through my dvr to the tv via hdmi (ota) like i said its weird if i had some sort of color push i would see this on all surfaces correct? leno and nbc w/ brian williams look fantastic. when i turn my dvr on i notice it amplifies the goofy blue/green color more, so i thought it was the dvr switched it out and it still does it. i org. excluded any issues w/ blu ray playback but last night watching SWAT the bank scene walls was just crazy disguesting but yet other scenes looked great i just dont get it. is it possible this is a process issue w/ the panny?

Guys, it took me 4 hrs to read the last 40 pages of this forum. Awesome info. I have couple of questions here. Thanks in advance.

Has anyone connected their PC/Desktops to the 65'' TV ? I have used HDMI to connect it and am running Vista 64 bit. In the 1920 * 1080 pixel (screen resolution), the desktop screen is not completely displayed. Only the next lower resolution displays the entire desktop on the screen(but with small black bars at both the ends). Could this be something to do with my Video card. I have never used HDMI from my PC before. i have always used the VGA/DVI ports to connect to monitors before. Someone please advice.

And the second question i have is. I have used sadmakers offsets. But i have set my Contrast to 90 and Brightness to 55 and Color at 55 & Sharpness at 75. This is where i like my Picture Quality good. Is there a max level to all these picture settings ? Am i damaging the TV by keeping everything high ?

try HD SIze 2. See if that helps.
Thanks ghettodude. Will try it today. One more question. Is there Picture in Picture with this model ?

So, I posted about this earlier and wanted to get some more opinions in light of some new information. I have a P50S1 that I ran through break in, 120 hours so far on the slides. Anyway...it has an obnoxious buzzing sound, that you can easily here from a good 10 feet away. Here's the odd part now. It only happens or is only really audible when on the TV input or the SD Card input. If I switch to another input, like HDMI, it's not there (with or without a signal). I can't test it with a signal on the TV input since we don't have cable TV. In any event, this is really odd, and I'm wondering if it's normal or this is a sign I've got a defective set..

I called Panasonic and they told me some things to try, but they are closed now so I can't get back with them. Maybe I'm just being paranoid here, but I have this idea in my head that dropping a grand on a TV should get you something without little annoying quirks like this...Maybe I'm expecting too much...

Anyone else seen this issue or run into this? I know all Plasmas buzz, although I have an old 42" 75PXU and it is absolutely silent...

I thought that too, that maybe it was the fan...but I don't think so. Also, not sure why the fan would be causing it on only the TV input and not on HDMI or Component....

Try downloading the AVS calibration disc and running the through the gray windows and see if they are exhibiting the same issue.

I've read that your display will become dimmer faster over the years with high brightness/contrast settings. But I'm not clear on how much faster that will happen. Also, after running the Spears & Munsil calibration disk, I've found that contrast needs to be way lower in order to pass the tests. My current cinema contrast is 43, with brightness at 62.

Thanks jborch. Will try to reduce the contrast then.

I have one Pc connected via DVI/HDMI to the P50s1. In my Tv the desktop screen is not complete too but it's minimal, about half an inch.
My VGA card is NVidia Gforce 4, (a bit old) and i think it has to do with the Graphic card.
But i noticed something else and i'ts very annoying. These dark bars at the sides of the text. It happens on the pc or when watching Blu-rays. like the example here: (Moving object over a background)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDCSbL8QjMc

Or when a solid color is displayed with text above it. Very noticieable on the Rating green screen before movie trailer.
Is it caused by the inaccurate video processing, a defective screen, or is it a normal issue of plasmas or just of this model?

Someone posted a similar problem earlier in this thread, but i can't remember what page.

The half-life is about 100,000 hours. That means for 6 hours/day use, in 45 years the screen will be half as bright. Even if Panasonic is playing number games and the half-life is only 50,000 hours, it will be half as bright in 22 years.

Am I worried? Nah!

Hello everyone,

I'm brand new to this forum after lurking around for a bit. I purchased a 42" SI back in May when they were still relatively new. Since then I've been keeping it on the standard video mode. I do have a few questions however, if you don't mind helping a rookie.

I checked my hours clocked in for the 1st time last night (First time I went into the SM and although such a minor thing to check, I scared myself. Especially when that big red screen came up that has TIME displayed! ).

Anyway, so the SM says I have over 350 hours on my TV. I was a little surprised by this number, but the TV doesn't lie right? I don't have cable (college student, the TV was enough money!), so my programming has been Xbox/PS3 (mostly), DVDs, and Blu-Rays. I noticed a slight IR problem after I played the hell out of Madden 10, with the scoreboard slightly visible on an all black screen. It isn't visible at all unless on a black load screen or something similar. I know it shouldn't be a problem and that it will go away eventually, but my heart skipped a little considering I should have been well after the 200+ when it happened.

That leads me to my next question. I know people have recommended the break in DVDs for the first 150 hrs. Obviously my TV is past that with 350, but I was wondering if it would still be worth it to use the DVDs (I know that movies and gaming may not burn the phosphors evenly)?

Finally, I am interested in tinkering with the SM settings to some of the settings some of the users here have posted. However, I'm a little nervous about it, and honestly don't even know where to start. I searched a little bit trying to find the instructions for my S1, and it would be great for someone to guide me in that direction. Places such as CNet warn about bricking a tv, but if I follow instructions word for word, it's not that difficult right?

Thanks in advance for all the help, and I can't wait to be a bigger part in this community!

Start by looking over the instructions posted in LarryinRI's sig and to me checking the time on my set was more advanced than inputting offsets.

I just got my 65s1 today. I'm putting it on TV table.. (Wife orders).. but I was thinking when I was in the back of it looking that I would be scared to death hanging it on the wall.. IT IS HUGE and heavy.. If I built a wall knowing I was putting it up then yes.. but We are in a 100 year old house... NO WAY would I trust it...

On that note... She is beautiful! Have the slides running right now. Can't wait!!

haha, well that is reassuring. I was actually looking to use your settings due to all that feedback on it. Would you recommend I further break in my TV, or do you think what I have is enough already?

Then why is everyone's contrast is low in their individual Picture settings ? I havent seen anything higher than 80. For me 90 is where the Picture is crisper. Should i adjust any other setting so that i get the same quality with lower contrast ?

My Settings are below. I used sadmayers offsets.
Custom
Contrast:90
Brightness:58
Color:56
Sharpness:75
Tint:0
Black Level:Light
Color Temp: Normal

?

Changing the HD SIze to 2 solved the problem. Thanks ghettodude.

First off I want to thank everyone on here for contributing to a great (and very long read) thread! I just got my p54s1 today and want to make sure I am doing everything correctly. My understanding is:

1. Play the break-in slides for 120 hrs on vivid and with 100% contrast and brightness (can I run the slides continuously for 5 days straight without putting on regular tv or shutting it off?)

2. Make adjustments per droid6's settings

3. sit back and enjoy!

Am I missing anything else?

100% on Brightness?? I thought it was 55 for the break-in?

I also got my S1 today. Going to run the slides until Sunday Night.. then watch a blu-ray.. then put the slides back on until I hit the 120 mark.. Gives me something to look forward to I guess..

Are you watching television from inside an illuminated tanning bed? Even 70 seems plenty toasty to me.

You have plenty of time on your set.

The blacks are not pure black, but again you cannot find an hdtv with pure black. I supposed 'how' black they are is somewhat subjective to the viewer, but a lot of factors do affect this. One thing I've found immensely helpful is placing a dim lamp directly behind the set (in an otherwise pitch black room). I also cover the lamp top with something to diffuse the light a bit. This keeps the light from being distracting, but provides just enough ambient light to make the blacks 'appear' much more pure black, since you aren't comparing them to the surrounding darkness or tv bezel."

Has anyone given this a try? I'm thinking about doing it today. I'm off from work this week with not much to do. Might try an inexpensive wall sconce behind the set mounted on the wall behind the tv. The one thing about the blacks that bothers me the most is when watching a letterboxed blu-ray. The black bars are never as black as I would like them to be. They always appear to be slightly illuminated. I'm off to Lowe's. Will report back with my findings.

After watching tv in a pitch black room, this absolutely helps. If you already have any light, possibly not... For what it's worth, I put a typical lamp behind my s1 with a 40-watt equivalent compact fluorescent bulb, and (i know it sounds ghetto) I placed a folded paper towel over the top of the fairly dark lampshade, as CF bulbs don't generate much heat and only for a movie length anyway. This helps to diffuse the light so there is less of a 'source' of light.

For me, this made at least a 50% difference. As I'm pretty critical, I still wish the blacks were blacker, but in a dark room the tv was obviously a lot brighter at its darkest than the rest of the room, whereas with the ambient light, the darkest blacks are darker than or at least equal to the surroundings. Thus there is no obvious comparison to make it seem bright. Just make sure the illumination is behind the tv or diffused enough, so it doesn't reflect of of the screen, since this could make the PQ worse.

Obviously this technically isn't making the black level any lower, but from a "perception" point of view, it is better.

Is it recommended that the settings for IR be set at automatic or is it better to set it on manual and determine the number of minutes? I'm just under 100 hours and I have left it on automatic. Thanks for any help.

I just received and hooked up my 46" S1 to DirectTv HD. This is my first experience with plasma, my other being a Samsung LCD. My question is the aspect ratio setting for this set, on the Samsung, there is an auto setting. On the Panasonic I'm finding I'm playing with the button trying to find the correct setting depending on the program I'm watching. Do I have the settings correct or am I missing something? What setting do most of you leave your set at?

I have DirecTV as well.

I leave my 65S1 set to "FULL". I don't "stretch" 4:3 on this display. I watch it pillar-boxed.

On the DirecTV side, my HDTV settings are:
  • Native: "ON"
  • Screen Format: Original Aspect Ratio
  • Bar Color: Black (up to you)
I have all resolutions checked, except 480p. I tried both 480i and 480p, and could see no difference. PQ is equally miserable, whether the HR or the S1 does the de-interlacing.

You only run it on full contrast, etc. when you're running the break-in slides. Then you turn it back down to pre-break-in levels when you watch stuff.
