I watched The Fifth Element the other day. I was blown away to say the least. The motion handling and blacks are almost beyond belief... of course I've never seen a Kuro

Hello all, great site, ton's of info. I recently decided to buy a 42' screen for the bedroom. After what seems to be a lot of reading on a myriad of different sites, I've settled on the TCP42S1, mainly because I've always wanted a plasma since the first time I saw one, and now with the NEO PDP they are as cheap to run as other tech. which is a concern as my hydro bill is ridiculous where I live. I'm no videophile, so I'm not concerned with the colour "problems" many have mentioned. It does concern me that the stores have told me the model is discontinued, which makes me very curious as to why, but it's not a deal breaker. My real problem is finding one here in Canada, BB is sold out, as well as Future shop, the Bay, and many of the small business' that carried it are sold out as well. I finally found a store that has a couple left, but they want the full M.S.R.P. of $1299 and won't come down. So my question is if I can't find any kind of deal on this set, should I wait until panasonic sends whatever is going to replace this set, I mean there has to be a 42' panasonic plasma with NEOPDP for 2010 right? And MSRP can't jump too far upwards for a comparable set right? And tell me if I'm wrong, but whatever comes to stores should be there within a few months right? Any opinions would be appreciated.

Is the service menu, offsets, clicks, etc., just for videophiles or would it also benefit the average joe (like me) who pretty much only watches HD cable (mostly sports, Discovery and HD Theater) with his tv set on Vivid and the temperature at cool? I get the feeling that most of you are interested in the cinema setting with warm temperatures. I am the opposite. I'd like my picture to be as bright and vibrant as possible, even if it's technically not accurate. Is there a way to change the settings in the service menu that will give me a brighter more colorful picture or should I stay away? Thanks.

e

Go ahead and buy it. I agonized after reading this thread. No green push, no reflection, bright enough in daylight to burn your eyes if you need it.

These guys sit in caves and bitch about nothing that would concern "regular" people...........Terry

The reality is most people watch wildly uncalibrated displays every day. Green push is the least of their problems.

Sales around christmas are pretty common especially in a supposedly miserable economy. Manufactures need to generate revenue... Period. Even if its at razor thin margins. I see the s1 readily available to me at almost every outlet. And the price went up?! So much for clearing stock.

I really don't think larry works for panasonic. I think he likes to display his knowledge about calibration and digital displays in general but he doesn't defend panny. He's just trying to put this huge "problem" into percepective. What's he reaching .01% of the people who bought this tv? Hardly an impact on anything. I see redwolf posting on cnet about this green problem and wherever else and i have to ask: Would you have honestly noticed the problem right when you got your tv without coming to avs? And if you did why didn't you bring it back? What's the point of continually posting about it all over the internet? Just my 2 cents

54S1 is going to be delivered in about an hour. Finally found one in stock and from a company competent enough to sell one. However, I'm going out of town for a week tomorrow, so I won't be able to enjoy it for a while. Hope my eyes make it through a week of watching the inlaws "torch" settings on their samsung plasma

I'm going to fire this one off again:

Does anyone know what size screw (M5? M8? etc.) fits into the wall-mount holes on the back of the 58S1?

I can tell you when I get home tonight. It's the biggest size that came with my set. I want to say M8, but I can't remember. I can let you know in a few hours.

Thanks e-man22.
Mine didn't come with any hardware for a wall mount--or the BB guys who set it up took them.
I'm going to fab up a basic safety strap into the wall, and figured I'd use those holes...

Sorry, mine didn't come with the hardware either. What I meant was that it was the biggest screw that came with my mount kit.

Good idea on the safety strap.

I just put up my 54 inch and I used the M8 screw size.

tv arrived and is in it's temporary set up. Wife is sick and too weak to help take old lcd down and put this tv up. I can only hook it up to the satellite box right now and my first impression is great. Definitely can tell a difference with the blacks. Since the old lcd is still hooked up I was able to compare both on the same channel. I think I'll be very happy once I get the user menu and possibly service menu adjustments put on the tv. thanks for all the info in this thread.

While driving today, I thought of something that may be useful to those having trouble grasping the concept of exactly what the offsets do.

I'll collect the reports of those that have posted RGB tracking both pre and post calibration. Of course, it would be best to show the 'from factory' charts and compare them to the 'after offset applied' charts but I think that I only have one or two.

I'll search my computer and the forums and hopefully have enough to post when I arrive at my destination on the 29th.

What's the difference between Warm D65 and Warm D65FLT from Droid6's final settings? There is only one WARM option on TV setup menu.

I've been trying to decide between the two sets as well. I have been using a different set of offsets (ruiz, I think?) and decided to try droid6's latest. From what I think I understand (but probably not quite correctly), the 35FTL set of offsets is just brighter. So if you have white walls or not a completely dark room, maybe use the 35 FTL set of offsets. Somebody please correct me :-)

I have a question and would greatly appreciate some help from P65S1 owners. I was previously considering a 63" SAmsung (due to width) but I would really like the 65S1 instead. My problem is the wdth of my entertainment center (60"). I am considering recesing thin (5" or so) vertical strips in the side wall sheet rock to accomodate the width of the 62" wide 65S1.

My questions:

1.Will one inch on each side block any of the screen?
2.Are there any vents, etc. on the side that I should be concerned about?

Here's a pic of the unit with a 50" Panny.

Dear Larry,
That would be very helpful for those trying to decide what changes to make. Would it make sense to separate by panel size? Or are the panels similar enough that one could try a few of the settings to see what works best in their setting? Just wondering . . . in any event, Larry, safe travels and thanks again for your help. I know that in my own case, I've tried to learn as much as possible and I'm really digging my 58S1 . . . even std def looks really good.

the manual say leave 3 15/16 or more for the top, left and right sides and 2 3/4 for the rear

I believe you have that backwards.. The 35ftl offsets make the brightness/luminance darker/lower. This is why he recommends a contrast setting of 100, to restore some of the brightness. The 35ftl offsets are meant for a nearly dark room. I've stuck with the "non-35ftl" offsets for the time being because I have a lot of lighting in the room, and didn't want to reserve the "warm" setting for a dark room only (I believe someone said "Warm" has the most accurate gamma curve?).

Perhaps the best thing to do is use the "normal" WB setting for a bright/well lit room, and use the 35ftl warm offsets for a dark room.

Getting my new panny in a week or two. Have been reading these threads until my eyes bug. Seems as if most people prefer Droid6's settings.
The above post talks about droid6 service menu settings.
There are many service menu settings.
Warm: D65 and
Warm: D65 35ftl
Normal: D75
and others.

At the bottom of the page droid6 has these main menu settings.

Cinema
Contrast: 100
Brightness: 63
Color: 36
Tint: 8
Sharpness: 25
Color Temp: Warm
C.A.T.S.: Off
Video NR: Off
MPEG NR: Off
Black Level: Light

So are the above main menu settings only for the 35ftl setting, or do these main menu settings apply to all the service menu tweaks?

Also, what is "normal" WB setting ??

Question for you guys. Apparently the panels inside the S1 and G10 are the same, but CNET's review touched on some not so accurate green and red for the S1. They even went so far as to say the black levels looked a little better on the G10. Combined w/ the THX mode, I'm having a tough time w/ this decision.

Anyone have a chance to see both and compare?

I have had a chance. I have S1, father in law has G10. Outside of THX mode I cannot really notice a difference between the two. His G10 seems alot brighter, BUT, he has his in a basement family room with very little light. I have my S1 in a moderately lit room.

Thing about the Cnet review is, they took all there color accuracy readings in the best picture mode the tv has, so with the S1 they said that was Cinema mode, and with the G10, THX mode.

Now if they reviewed the G10 in its Cinema mode instead of THX, it would of had the exact same score as the S1.

I was under the impression of the opposite--that the 35 ftL settings were brighter.
Could anyone in-the-know confirm the difference? Droid6?
hi. picked up a 50s1 a few days ago great set. no problems, no color issues. tv looks great. Is it normal to see a green looking dancing pixels on certain picture modes in dark areas? I noticed that on standard mode when i get real close to the screen i see these dancing green pixels in dark spots on the screen. this dont happen in cinema, custom, game, etc. Is this normal for plasma?
Those only apply to the 35FTL settings, within the next few days I am going to redo all my settings so the user menu settings are universal.

depending on when you are making your decision, I can give you a comparison in a few days. My father just picked up a G10 so I'll give it a look over Christmas to see how it compares to my S1.
