Another subwoofer GTG, Southern style - Page 10

This is only a theory and an opinion, but our ultimate goal with sound from our subwoofers is a clean flat fr. If we can do this by using free software and a $100 feedback destroyer why should we buy a platform for our sub that would only "fix" a small portion of the output for more money?

I say no. But its just an opinion.

True, one of the other high points about it is it is supposed to decouple it from your floor basically keeping it from rattling walls. I do have some clocks and some other things on the wall that occasionally rattle at certain tones and if it would stop this that would be nice.

Depending on the floor you have I would imagine it may or may not help. I have carpet over padding over concrete and I still have things that rattle. The floor doesn't move really at all.

I currently have hardwood floors in my living room, but there is a good 4 feet of crawl space underneath the house before you get to the foundation.

How many LFE RCA outs are on the HK reciever...2? Does any one have an RCA to XLR cable they can bring? I only have 1 currently and we should probably have 2 on hand.

Vili,

I haven't made the dedicated LMS box yet. So busy lately... The plan is to start Thursday and get it done by Sunday this week.
Sorry, I only have an RCA cable.

Excellent Ricci, keep us posted. What dimensions/design are you going to use to build the box?

The largest is 30x19 inches so even a 21" cube it would be hanging off the side a bit.

Ricci, have you managed to build the enclosure yet for your LMS?

My floor is covered with 1/2" thick black, rubber exercise flooring. My subs do not transfer vibration from the cabinets to the floor. It also does a lot for keeping sound from going through the floor to the room below. It works very well, but it is a pain to keep clean.

Probably 22" cube, maybe 21". I'm looking at doing a removable baffle like on the other box I'll be bringing, but I may not have time to complete it like I want to.

Nice mjg, ya rubber mats are a pain! When I was overseas in the gym they had rubber mats and they mopped every day, but it was still always dirty looking. Although you don't have quite the amount of sand they do.

Sounds good Ricci, I'll be interested to check out all of your builds.

My floor is the 24" x 24" interlocking rubber floor tile. It fits together nice and tight.

I have a rca to xlr cable. Its only 6 feet long but it may work. I also have a rca to 1/4 inch cable.
I hope to have next week off so I can keep the house a little more acceptable. Having 2 young boys, a fifteen year old girl, and a couple dogs keeps the place just out of order enough to make someone crazy. But this will give me time to move around my sub some to find better spots.

Also I have my surround sound side speakers at the middle of the room. Better placement for where we sit. I have the wires run through the attic and walls so I will probably not move them for the meet. We will just have to suffer listening to surround speakers in front of us. I think the subs we will have should make up for it though.

are you planning on having scoring sheets of any kind?

even though its not going to be double blind laboratory controlled conditions, having a sheet for each person where they could score each sub across a few categories and take some subjective notes might help in any write-ups that follow the gtg.

depth/extension
sound quality lower bass
sound quality upper bass
headroom/max spl

maybe this would be useless. just thought i'd kick the idea out there.

I already decided I was going to buy some notepads for people to put some ideas of the subs down on paper. That way people won't have to remember little intricacies about each one when it comes down to reporting our findings back here.
Yep. I was thinking the same thing. Something involving subjective notes on how the subs perform on the various tracks. Maybe not as rigid as a scoring sheet a bit more free form but better than just memory.
Ya that sounds good. A scoring sheet might not be a good idea for the less adept (myself) since I don't have the experience to know what each should sound like but you guys would be better at it. Less than 2 weeks a way.

Scoring is a bit much I think, at least for what we're doing. I wouldn't feel good about giving subs a score, especially since we have such a wide range ($$$) of subwoofers that would be "competing" against each other. This is more of a gathering with opinions. We would have to set up criteria for each range of sub and a scoring system for them. Craigsub had the luxury of staying with the sub for long periods of time and doing lots of measurements and adding subs scores in as he got new ones. We'll only have 1/2-1 hour with each sub and limited source material. I think that we'll have good initial opinions of the subs at the end of the day, and if anyone were to want to purchase one afterwards, they would know what they're buying.

I have two RCA to XLR cables. They are only 3' cables that I bought from Monoprice. I have not even opened them. I ended up using RCA ti 1/4" phono.

I believe speaker cable is what we will need more of than anything. I have about a 12 or 15 foot run from my amp to my sub as it is now. I have tons of scrap speaker cable of various lengths but if we need more I can go grab some.

I have a 25' piece of Monster speaker cable. I do not buy Monster anything it was a gift that I never got returned. It is still unopened, but I have had it for over a year. I will bring it. I think it is only 14ga.

I like the "monster defense mechanism" that most people on here have. I have one monster cable that I got before I knew any better. Luckily it was just a $5 clearance cable and not a $200 hdmi cable some people are getting ripped off with.

I think that cable would be fine. Unless I get a itch for a new diy cable we can go with that. I have been wanting to do a new subwoofer cable out of 10/4 electrical cabling. Its a little over $2 a foot at lowes and home depot and can put a lot of power through them.

I have 25-30' of 10/4 cable with 30 amp twist lock ends. It is for my generator to transfer switch (back-up power) for my house. I also have about 200' to 250' of 10/4 with twist lock ends. It is for a small portable 220 volt electric crane (30' boom point) that we use on multi story buildings. The 200 to 250' cable is not very clean and very heavy to move around.

That's what I need. The ability to still watch movies when the power goes off. Trying to convince my wife on that one. Right now our only backup power comes in the form of a flashlight.

We live in the woods. In the 90's we had a very bad ice storm and were without power for a week. At that time we only had a heat pump and no back-up. We had a fireplace, but it was a factory built one that put out next to no heat. After that storm I installed a gas furnace and a dual fuel furnace. I also installed a second fireplace that actually had a decent efficiency rating ( as far as fireplaces go). I like a working fireplace (grew up with one) and do not like the look of a wood burning stove. Couple that with the generator and transfer switch and we are in pretty good shape for power outages. The generator is not huge (8,750 running not peak watts), but I can power the heat, lights, stove, fridge and microwave. If I turn off everything except lights I can use the water heater.

I hope after listening to John and Ricci's subs I can still stand listening to my own?
Alright guys I have a few questions...trying to figure out logistics for HPF's, what subs are matched with what amps and the smoothest way to rig all of this up for fast switches between subs here. I'm working on a rough flow chart & wiring scheme...

The BIC H100, Outlaw LFM-1 and ED A7S450 are all of the commercial subs, I going to assume that they have all of the HPF or other protections they need built in.

Brandon you first...

Your sub uses speaker wire correct? Do you bridge your EP2500 into it? Is 50ft of 10/3 enough to get 220v for the big amps into the listening room? What's the deal on the 13W7, confirmed ,or not? If so, did you decide sealed hopefully? Any word from John?

mjg100,

Are you bringing the Nady 1100 for your Shiva? Do you bridge it into it? Do you use speaker wire?

Robert,

Are the Epic 12's going to be there and if so are they going to be sealed? Will they be wired for speakon, or bare wire? What load will they present (how will they be wired) both drivers on a single terminal in one box, or 2 seperate terminals? I'm wondering what amp we should use on them. If they are presented as a single load we can use one channel of the IT8000 or another big amp.

I think I'm going to bring a PL9.0 and just leave the CE4000 at home. We can run 2 subs off of the PL9.0 and the IT8000 both, with channels 1 & 2 set different for them if needed. The CE4000 would've had to have been bridged into the big stuff. After looking at everything I will be bringing, I may just bring a rack for some of it. I'll be bringing a Peavey PV14 mixer to run levels with.

QSC PL9.0
Crest 8002
Peavey PV14
Behringer Xenyx 1202
DCX2496
Rane PE-17
Laptop with REW
Calibrated ECM8000
XXX 18
LMS 18
50ft 10/3 220v extension
Galaxy CM140
speakon cords and other cables out the wazoo...

Everything is built into my Bic H100, just plug in the power cord, RCA cable and start pumpin.
The ED A7S-450 (sealed sub) uses the ED LT1300. The LT1300 does not have a HPF on it. I do not have a long coax cable for the A7S-450. All of my long coax cables are installed in the walls. For the Shiva I will bring the Nady XA1100, RCA to 1/4" phono and 25 feet of 14ga. speaker wire with banana plugs. All I will need for the Shiva is a HPF and LFE source. The Shiva is wired up 4 ohm and I use one 500 watt channel of the Nady. I have some cheap RCA splitters if needed. Just let me know.
