I enjoyed the episode and had no trouble following the show. There is still plenty of ground to cover because the Senator is still into play and I can see him (or his handiwork) popping up from time-to-time. Just because one on-going mystery has supposedly been solved doesn't mean the show has to end.

I guess you would also say that when and if Red John is finally found out once and for all, we may as well cancel The Mentalist too?

It still bugs me that the would-be assassin would let Beckett dangle and likely drop to her death BEFORE obtaining the blackmail information that has kept her from being killed all along. I suppose he knew the police were well on there way there and would grab her just in time, just before she let go of the ledge. so stupid.

That's why it's a TV drama rather than a documentary. I agree that some things in many shows may not make perfect sense, but they do have entertainment value. The Coasters said it best:

I plopped down in my easy chair and turned on Channel 2
A bad gunslinger called Salty Sam was chasin' poor Sweet Sue
He trapped her in the old sawmill and said with an evil laugh,
"If you don't give me the deed to your ranch
I'll saw you all in half!"
And then he grabbed her (and then)
He tied her up (and then)
He turned on the bandsaw (and then, and then...!)

[Chorus:]
And then along came Jones
Tall thin Jones
Slow-walkin' Jones
Slow-talkin' Jones
Along came long, lean, lanky Jones

Commercial came on, so I got up to get myself a snack
You should've seen what was goin' on by the time that I got back
Down in the old abandoned mine, Sweet Sue was a havin' fits
That villain said, "Give me the deed to your ranch
Or I'll blow you all to bits!"
And then he grabbed her (and then)
He tied her up (and then)
He lit the fuse to the dynamite (and then, and then...!)

[Chorus]

I got so bugged I turned it off and turned on another show
But there was the same old shoot-'em-up and the same old rodeo
Salty Sam was tryin' to stuff Sweet Sue in a burlap sack
He said, "If you don't give me the deed to your ranch
I'm gonna throw you on the railroad tracks!"
And then he grabbed her (and then)
He tied her up (and then)
He threw her on the railroad tracks (and then)
A train started comin' (and then, and then...!)

[Chorus]

Loved the opener. The "quick hide" scenes in their respective apartments were very funny and they leave a lot of running room for the writers to milk loads of yucks from the "secret" relationship angle. As far as the plot line from last night goes, I had no real problems with it. Kate's bluffing the Senator with the bank account number was well played but clocking him with the butt of her piece may have been overplayed. With this part of the story temporarily "settled", the show can now refocus on the normal story lines while playing Castle and Beckett's relationship for everything that it's worth with the spectre of the dark conspiracy always in the background ready to be revived when it suits the writers.

For me the most entertaining parts of the show were the sexual tension between Beckett and Castle and the mystery behind her mom's death. Now that they are a couple, I don't see much reason to continue the show beyond this season (after the senator is brought to justice). I found last season to be pretty stale at best so I would hate to see this once great show limp along aimlessly.

And yes, once Red John is revealed and hopefully stopped, then I think The Mentalist should end as well.

Given his seemingly incredible omnipotence, Red John will never be found because the only thing I can figure is that he must be Satan. tongue.gif

Your song ditty aside, I understand we all have to swallow a certain amount of disbelief with most tv dramas and each person will have their own limits for being able to just roll with it. And I do roll with it, for the most part. But this particular scene was still bugging me for a while longer than most. It definitely had dramatic "entertainment value", but it was a very long way off from merely not making "perfect sense".

eek.gif Well, I guess it is fiction, anything's possible.

It's always the big question for a show. They create some sexual/relationship tension, but they can't drag it on too long or they lose viewers. Of course, after it's gone, they lose viewers, anyway.

Yeah, me 3. I have developed a virtually unlimited capacity to suspend disbelief when I watch a serialized TV show. The important things are that it be excitingly entertaining, that it make sense is substantially less so. Thus for my own peace of mind, I work very hard to ignore the howlers, which inevitably crop up from time to time.

good season opening episode. i thought it was entertaining and seemed to go by quickly. that has to be a good sign smile.gif

looking forward to the season!

btw, I'm happy about Castle and Beckett finally getting together. The myth of inevitable Moonlighting-style catastrophe ahead is way overblown. Good writing overcomes all.

You beat me to it. I was thinking earlier how glad I was that Castle and Beckett got together at long last.

I've been informed that the first three episode numbers of the season are:

501
503
502

AFAIK, that is the order they need to be in. Won't know for sure until the next two air.

It is really unusual for Castle to air shows out-of-sequence. So, I'm guessing in this case, unlike Body of Proof, it was production reasons.

I just started the Premiere and OMG! So fing hilarious! LMAO!

Great fing premiere!

Last night's episode was for me, the worst of the series. The interplay between Beckett and Castle over their relationship dominated the episode and I just wanted to reach through the screen and smack each of them, repeatedly.

If that continues, I'll move on.
I had the exact opposite reaction. The character interplay and my investment in them is the main draw for me. Nathan is a total hoot, I'm always very entertained watching him. And I've grown increasingly impressed with the light comic touch of the Beckett actress (forgetting her name.. Stacha or something).

The slight tedium of "the case" was the least fun/interesting part for me. But I've been "over" police procedural series for a while now. Of this program type, I only watch this show and the Mentalist and I've decided it will be a long time before I become a regular viewer of any future "crime solving" series. Such tired, well-trodden territory. It will have to be incredibility unique and/or outstanding and universally praised to get me off that stance.

To each their own smile.gif

I agree with your comment about "police procedural" series' as I watch very few for maybe the same reasons as you. What made this different was the Nathan "total hoot" character and the personalities of the cops on Beckett's team.

I'm glad they moved the relationship to the next level but their teenage reactions and subsequent dialog was like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. Oh yeah, I like the mentalist as well, again, for the characters much more then the crime "plot".

Methinks you are in the minority here. wink.gif

David James - fair enough, we all have our own sometimes unique irritation trigger points. Sometimes they overlap with others and sometimes they don't. It'll be interesting to see what others think about it, especially as time goes on and also how the ratings hold up.

That was one of the best episodes to date, long overdue (other than the last episode of last season). Spot on and very well done. Too bad the X files wasn't done that well.

You need the "smacking". rolleyes.gif

The romance angle can at times get in the way, but Nathan playing in front of the weather screen was laugh out loud.

i really enjoy the last episodes, it was funny.

After all, this is a comedy/drama. It's not CSI NY with everything serious. wink.gif

Yeah, you're right, it's impossible for someone to have a different opinion.

Sure it's possible even if it is incorrect.
