I took delivery of my 42" about 4 hours ago. I ran the slides a bit, popped in a couple of blu-rays for a few minutes, watched some analog cable, and am about to check out some 360 games. So far, I'm impressed... coming from a two-year old Samsung LCD with the ultra-clear panel. Finally, blacks are black. Movement is smooth.

Analog cable looks pretty bad... as expected and as it did on the samsung. Also, I don't really see that THX mode is too dark and the tv is in a bedroom with a window adjacent to the tv and an overhead light. And for anyone who doesn't think plasmas can get bright enough, those break-in slides on the vivid settings are BRIGHT lol

I need some help with cabinet measurement on a real TC-P46G10 since one is not available in stores here yet. I have 44.75 inches between side walls that the TV must fit between. The manual says that the width is 44.6" - but it also has the disclaimer that "... Dimensions shown are approximate." Since I only have 15 hundreths of an inch to spare, I would feel more confortable with an actual measurement from a real life production model. Could someone please measure the width of a 46G10 - like at the bottom, middle, and top - and pass that along? Thanks in advance.

A related question: There is an HDMI input on the left edge of the set. If there is a wall up tight against the left side of the set, is there room for the HDMI to be plugged in and bend down out of the way? Or in my case would I have to give up those side inputs? The set would be on its stand, and I would twist it enough to plug in a cable, then return it, if possible.

Wow, it looks like you may make it by a c*nt hair. Here are my measurements but I gotta tell you that the way the bezel tapers it was tough to get dead nuts measurements, especially with the rounded corners. Also, the only way I could get a measurement of the middle would be to go across the front of the panel but again, the bezel kind of tapers as it goes back so I didn't even bother with that one. At the widest on the top edge I got 44 9/16" (you can do the decimal conversion yourself) and along the bottom I got 44 5/8". I think that the bottom is in reality the same as the top and that my measurement is off. I really have to stress the way that the bezel is it makes it hard, it's not like its all perfect 90 degree angles with perfect edges. You may want a backup plan just in case. Also if this matters, the height I have on the stand is 30 3/16".
As far as your other situation, the inputs are recessed from the side 1 5/8". I plugged an HDMI cable into the side input and curved it around towards the back but you really have to put a pretty tight curve in it, borderline kink, to get it so that it's not extended out past the side of the bezel. With the limited amount of space you are working with, you may want to look into an alternative to use that side HDMI. I don't know if there are cables that have a smaller housing around the end thus making possible to make your turn sooner or if you could just take that housing off all together. If my number of 44 9/16" is accurate then maybe you could cheat the panel to the right to gain that 3/16" and this may be enough or it may even be enough to begin with.
I know that there isn't a lot of exactness to everything I just said but this is all I got for you. Good luck and hopefully someone weights in with something more solid.

I am looking at the 50G10... anyone know if I need to drill holes into my TV stand for the pedestal stand or are there any other wires to attach to get it to stand up? (My Pioneer had bolts for my old TV stand.)

This is the response I got when I asked a similar question:

Thanks, wantinganewtoy --- I think I am ready to risk it now. It sounds like the dimensions in the manual agree with production models.

The HDMI cables that I have are larger on the end, like 1 3/4" of hard supportive hood - so I think if I cut the hood of the cable apart, it would make the corner nicely. RCA phone plugs should be fine in that tight space.

Many thanks for your measurements.

Now, I wonder what a 46G15 width is. ....

In response to the requests for settings from a reliable source, here are mine after someone else posted after Chad calibrated his panel. (sorry - no SM offsets this post)

Custom Mode
Contrast +65
Brightness +50
Color +38
Tint 0
Sharpness +25
Color Temp Warm2
Color Mgmt. Off
x.v. Color Off
C.A.T.S. Off
Video NR Weak

Adv. Picture Settings
Block NR Off
Mosquito NR Off
Black Level Light
3:2 pulldown On
HD size 2

Obviously without the Service Menu offsets, this is not a complete answer for anyone, but it should give everyone a starting point for their tweaking.
I can't say enough about how great the picture quality is on this panel.
If there is anyone on the fence about this, you can fell great about pulling the trigger on a G10 I.M.O.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend - the weather here is perfect.
Best

That's a pretty darn nice setting....especially for a bright daytime setting!!!

I've had mine for 120 hrs. now...I've run the break-in jpegs for 74 hrs out of the 120...I got it last Saturday afternoon....and it's never been off...I had a scary moment the first night....fell asleep watching a Starz OD HD movie and woke up the first morning to a static blue Cox menu screen that was probably displayed for 6 hrs straight....no IR whatsoever....nothing but stellar HD images being spat out by this puppy...

This display so blows away 95% of everything out there...and is unequivocally the best bang for the buck...50" in my 12' X 24' LR seems really big...and it runs pretty cool for a plasma....just barely warm to the touch!

lol at calling Best Buy and Sears a "friendly local establishment". Best Buy is a joke.

Trust me, if all the Best Buys of the world went out of business Wal-Mart would just ramp up their electronic selection. They are already in the process of doing that at many stores. Would you rather buy your tv online or get it from your "friendly local establishment" Wal-Mart?

This might be one of the most repated questions with the most known answers, but I don't feel like digging around in a forum pile, so...where can one obtain this Break-In Slideshow for new Plasmas that everyone keeps mentioning, either putting it on SD or DVD?

I just ordered my G10 today from Vanns on the 30 months no interest and free mount (which I'll be using for a bedroom TV, not the G10), and wanted to get a jump on the research to ramp up my Picture Quality. I hope this green issues isn't as bad as some make it out to be.

Also, as usual, there's that little man in the back of my head telling me I should have bought the V10 for $500 more. But the only thing on it that seemed worthwile was the 24p Cinematic Playback. Let alone none of the stores around me having any G10s or V10s, I've never seen this feature in person for comparison. Also the V10's body is a little nicer than the G10. However, my purchase has been made! Somebody make me feel good about it please. Or should I frantically call Vann's in the morning and try to switch to the V10?

I read through this thread and haven't found much, how well does the G10 work as a PC Monitor? (42" specifically) Obviously IR could be an issue, but what have people found?

I've been with my P50G10 for about 1 week now. Purchased for 1399 at bestbuy thanks to a $100 computer error in my favor. I though I'd share some detailed field notes and see if others have noticed any of the same things.

Video system: HD DVR cable box, component cables. PS3 (for blu-ray and DVD), HDMI. Seating Distance: apx 8 ft. Main Settings (not professionally calibrated, no break-in routine used): custom, warm 2, black level=light, Contrast 61, Bright 75, Color 30, Tint 0, Sharp 25

Overall: I am mostly pleased. This is an upgrade from a 42" Pany plasma EDTV, so quite a difference. I am shocked with how good blu-ray looks and how bad broadcast HD looks on this TV. Even DVD looks better than most broadcast HD on this television. Broadcast HD looked great on the 42" EDTV: the smaller size and lower resolution hid a lot of problems!

Blacks/contrast: no complaints!

Color: I prefer my color desaturated a bit. Even at 30, though, some of the yellows seem to glow greenish-orange, which I think is what Chad and CNET were talking about. Sometimes, I think this is partly due to the source. Often, fleshtones look perfect, but I think the PG10 (at least on my settings) amplifies any extra yellow/orange in an image, especially in scenes/shots that already have an artificially "warm" processed color. For instance: in some of the early scenes in the Taken Blu-Ray, where Liam and his friends are having a friendly nighttime cookout (a friendly cookout? get to the mayhem!), all of the actors look very orange. In daylight scenes, Liam looks normal. In the Run, Fat Boy, Run Blu-Ray Thandie Newton and Simon Pegg both look VERY orange during some scenes, while at other times (sometimes in back-to-back shots) their skin tones look very natural (Hank Azaria's skin never looks natural... hmmmm). In The Thing Blu-Ray, colors look perfect to me almost all the time, the same for Kill Bill 1&2. In Underworld 3, everything is blue, of course, except for torches which show the greenish/orange color that I'm talking about.

So I mainly wanted to share those notes about color and see if anyone else is experiencing the same. Would a pro calibration (I live in Chad's service area!) alleviate the toxic orange? Is anybody using Warm 1??? It seems to be less toxic, but everyone is using Warm 2, and I don't want to be different...

I played around with Warm 2, Warm 1, and Normal in THX mode. Decided on Warm 1 as a good option. I also like the factory "Standard" setting (with Warm 2) for general program viewing, and I use THX for movies (HBO, Starz, DVDs, etc), so I'm a bit odd anyway. I just passed my break-in, so I haven't tried out the custom setting yet, but will eventually.

For whatever reason, the picture is obviously wrong on this year's THX but it went to production anyway. Why? Your guess is as good as mine. This was mentioned in Chad B's reivew on the forum, as well as CNET's review. Play around and see for yourself. It's very very obvious.

I tweaked custom mode using DVE Blu Ray and the picture is much better.

I noticed the same thing with THX at first with flesh tones. After 140 hours, it looks better to me now, although maybe I've just gotten used to it!

Has there been any firmware updates for this tv? I have one that was made in April. How would you update the firmware? Do you just sign onto Vieracast?

I used it as a monitor briefly when I was working on a loaned laptop. It looks pretty sharp. I did some informal tests of resolution and colors and it seems to handle low contrast gradients well, while high contrast gradients seem to have a bit of posterization.

As for image retention, I don't think it's something to worry about, but I only used it for an hour, while doing all sorts of things on it.

HELP WITH CALIBRATION. I was in my local BB today, they finally have a 50g10 in stock, but then they started talking to me about calibration. I just want to confirm what is true or not (as i never trust anyone in BB). I thought a calibration was just a custom/complicated adjustment to the settings to help the picture. BB was saying they actually go into a service panel in the back of the tv and adjust manufacturer setting in the tv, to the point where they actually get the tv to run cooler than normal. Is this true, or are they bs'ing me? I know adjusting contrast and brightness etc. helps tv's run cooler anyway right? Any help in the next few hours would be great, because I might go pick it up after work. Thanks!

It works great as a computer monitor. I'm using it as my main monitor at 1920x1080 and it just about fills the entire screen. Everything looks fantastic, except when you move white windows around on a dark background really fast. Some really ugly artifacts trail all over the place. Other than that games look brilliant, and IR shouldn't be a problem if you leave static images on for less than 5 or 6 hours.

50G10 and soundbar both delivered today, wooh!

But, I had to go back to work, and am here for another hour and a half before playtime
