Question about the color options on the PS3 and a G10. Should I be using the extra color options within the PS3 (Super White/RGB Full)? Also does my audio receiver (STR-DG720) need to be fully compliant in these two standards to even see a difference?

RGB should be set to "LIMITED" for standard video displays. Superwhite should be ON.

I am using "full" format now for HD and Blu ray, is that the correct format?

What format do you guys use for sd channels, hd channels, and blu rays?

Anyone?

This is my first flat-screen. I gave my Mitsubishi 48 inch projection TV (6 years old) to a friend.

I am running the break-in slides w D-Nice's settings. I did watch a few hours of Comcast cable TV and some of the BD version of the Dark Knight and SD-DVD of Gladiator (watched on new Panny BD60K player). Here are my observations:

1. No buzz. If I put my head behind the TV there is a very slight buzz at times but nothing audible from the front.

2. No stuck pixels or phosphor trails noted.

3. I really like the look of the TV. It seems solid and well-built. I debated going with the V10 but the looks and 96HZ were not worth it for me.

4. Sound from the TV's speakers is not bad - better than I thought it would be after reading this forum. I am running a 5.1 system for the BD player though.

5. SD broadcasts do not look bad. Again, better than I thought based on reading this forum.

6. HD broadcasts look really nice and, as others have noted, there is a real difference depending on the channel. Really good HD broadcasts look REALLY GOOD.

7. SD DVDs look almost as good as BD! The Panny does a great job upconverting - I was surprised at how good they look.

8. BD is AMAZING! The quality is 10 of 10 to my eyes. Wow, wow, wow....

9. I am using "custom" for my viewing and some of the settings discussed in this forum. THX is just what others have said although not as dim as I expected.

10. Black level looks very good and so do colors. I looked at last year's 800 and 850 Panny's and the 54G10 seemed to have slightly better black levels and was a little brighter.

11. The remote is ok although just the volume and channel buttons light up.

12. The TV gets hot running the break-in slides in vivid mode. I could feel the extra heat in the room and coming off the TV. Custom mode generates less heat.

13. The screen reflects more light than the Pioneer's but a bit less than the Sammys I looked at. Regardless, it's a lot better in that regard than the 48 inch Mitsubishi projection TV it replaced.

A few final comments which may be helpful for those debating the purchase of this TV versus others:

Other TVs I looked at were Pioneer 5020s and FD111s and Sammy B series 560 and 650 plasmas and the 7000 series Sammy LCD. The Pioneers were all that's been said on AVS. I did not like the whites though ("dirty"), plus a lot of complaints about buzzing made me nervous and so did the fact that Pioneer was going out of TV business. I also got the 54G10 for less than the 5020 was on sale for before at Best Buy. I loved the 111 but I wanted something bigger and the money I saved on the 54G10 paid for a lot of extras. To be honest, even with the "whites" issues, the 111 was the nicest TV I saw next to the 54G10.

The Sammys surprised me, even the LCD. They were all very good in the picture department. Great colors and adustability but with blacks a bit lighter that the Pannys. I know this is very subjective, but I just did not like the look of the Sammys. The stands and clear plastic around the edges of the bezel looked cheap to me and their build quality (seams and materials) was below the Panny. Finally, I was somewhat concerned about the plasma models' IR, buzzing (seems to be an issues based on reading the Sammy forums) and overall quality. However, I have other Sammy products and their quality has been excellent. So, I think the Sammys could give the Panny a run for the money and they certainly seem to have come a long way from last year's sets. As for the LCD, I really liked it but the picture quality did drop off a bit (not as much as I thought it would) at angles and the cost was way too high.

To conclude, I am very happy with the 54G10. I appreciate all the information on AVS that helped guide me to this purchase and look forward to learning more.

Roadking,
I just ordered the 54G10 on Friday from Sears. How long did it take yours to get delivered? I haven't gotten an E-mail confirmation yet, even though the credit card has a pending transaction on it. I'm assuming that they do not know when they'll be able to deliver it yet.
Sears told me that they could deliver the TV the next day. I waited a few days because I needed to get cables, etc. They seemed pretty flexible as far as delivery dates.

Has anyone here had theirs calibrated yet, and have comments regarding the improvement from default(or calibrated) user menu settings?

I have calibrated it using the settings provided on these forums. It's the "basic calibration" and not a full-service calibration. Please let us know how your calibration works out.

Hi all... great thread here! I believe I've actually read most of it; whew! Lot's of terrific information here.

I am currently going through the first 100 hours with all the "proper" settings reduced as recommended. I leave the unit on Discovery HD throughout the day since there are no permanent images on the lower right or left hand corners and the HD content is super and varied. Although the TV stays on for long periods of time the break-in will be completed within a week.

There is a problem, however... the LAN port is dead. My Ethernet cable from the wall jack behind the TV is in perfect condition and passes a healthy signal. Using that cable my laptop connects just fine to my router and accesses the home network and internet with zero problems or performance issues. When then connected to the 50G10 the "Network Settings" "Connection Test" fails every time. I've even tried setting up a static IP but that fails as well. I checked the LAN port and it's external appearance is completely normal with all the proper contacts in place and solid.

I called Panasonic Tech Support but the technician had no information (units are too new for there to be any trouble history) and passed me off to the next tier who should be calling me in the next couple days.

I've already talked with Best Buy and they assured me that if there's a problem they'll bring a new one to my home and pick up the failed one. They have been just amazing to work with, both during the sale and afterward. Excellent experience with them.

Just curious if anyone out there has experienced this and if there is a simple solution while I await a call from Panasonic. Thanks for your time!

Doug

First, I'm wondering whether I should bother trying to make a wireless connection to the internet. My cable modem is a bit far to make a direct connection. What kind of equipment do I need to connect to my wireless router? The same kind of adapter that connects to a desktop?

Second, my son plans to connect an xbox and/or wii. If I limit his game-playing to an hour or two at the start (offset by many more hours of viewing HD tv), is there any significant risk of burn-in? (Last time I researched this general issue I had the impression that burn-in was not much of an issue with plasmas anymore, but I'm not sure if that was based on game playing as well as TV viewing.)

Third, am I correct in understanding that, once he connects the game(s) physically, the TV will automatically put him in "game" mode (i.e., as opposed to custom, standard, etc)? Or do we have to go through any kind of setup procedure? If a setup is required, is it true that the unit will automatically remember the proper setting whenever the game(s) is played?

I don't know about issue #1, but

#2: My kids and I play Wii and PS3. If you leave those menus up for a few minutes, you will get minor IR (visible on black screens) that will go away fast when you return to full screen viewing or gaming. So don't pause too long, and just switch off the TV if you're going to take a break for a few minutes (or run the slide show or full screen shows). Otherwise, yeah, you can play to your heart's content! We do!

#3: In the menu, set the input mode to "Game" where you've made your connection. The TV will set the picture mode to Game automatically. Then you can just press the "Game" button on your remote to toggle through those inputs. I actually named my HD receiver "Game" and shifted the picture to "Custom" because it eliminated a step when switching sources.

I just ordered a 42G10 from Amazon!!!

I have been debating for at least a month on this TV because of the phosphor lag problem, but I don't see it in the stores. I should be fine.

I saw the 42S1 for $100 bucks cheaper, but thought it'd be worth the extra money for a VGA port for my Dreamcast as well as the additional settings.

All in all, I think I got a great deal. Less than 1K shipped with tax directly from Amazon.

I hope it gets here soon.

As a long time lurker on the forum, I would like to formally say hi.

I own a TCP50G10 and it is my first plasma. My others sets are a 54" JVC LCOS, and a 52" Samsung LNT526F.

I have both a comment and a question. Looking for some feedback to both.

My initial impression is that the G10 has had the best picture out of the box of any TV I have owned. I have the set in my basement and it has what I think is a real natural color tone to it. It is definitely darker than my LCD, however I think the overall picture is more organic and natural to my eyes.
Is this a fair assessment? Would others agree?

I have only 1 minor concern and that is I watch a lot of football, and my initial reactions are that the LCD pop and brightness makes it a better fit for sports. I have read that the Plasma should be better than my non 120hz LCD in every aspect. Is this something my eyes need to adjust too (I only have about 2 hours post break-in viewing) in order to appreciate?

I know the above sounds crazy, but I recall that it took quite some time for my eyes to adjust to an LCD picture.

Currently I am using the settings goofyjessie posted.

My other question concerns 3:2 pull down. Does that affect 1080i signal coming from my cable source (FIOS), or only blu ray content? Would I want it on if I watch a lot of sports?

Thanks in advance for any replies...

-Mike

I have a 42 G10 and my connections are

cable > DVR (SA8300HD time warner) > HDMI > TV.

My friend has a samsung plasma with the same connection but yet his HD channels look crisper than mine. My HD images appear a little grainier. I have the color temp as warm 2. When i connect the cable directly to the Tv Digital channels look phenomenal.

I was on here a couple days ago and i believe Randy suggested that the problem might be from Time Warner choking the signal to save bandwith, but my friends lives 5min away and his HD broadcasts are sharper and very crisp.

Any idea what i am doing wrong here? I got my HDMI cables from monoprice and so did my friend so i def know it cant be that since i changed the cables and still the same effect.

Thanks for your help

Yes-- use Zoom to fill up the screen with SD content to avoid burn-in.

A question about naming a source "Game." If you label an input "game", then the default picture setting is "game" (although you can change it). You can then also get to that source by just tapping the "Game" button on the remote-nice. CNET says this is really only a picture mode and does not shut off or change processing like other sets (LCDs). I guess Plasmas have such fast response times that they don't need to eliminate imaging processing. Is this correct? Can I label my BD player "game" so I can get there faster and then just change the picture setting to "THX", for example?

I just got a new 54G10 and Panny BD60 Blu Ray player.

I am trying to figure out how to get the Blu ray audio to go through the receiver. Is this what I need to do?

Use HDMI cable to link Blu Ray player to TV
Use optical audio cable to link from Blu Ray player to receiver

Anyone who has done this or knows please weigh in. Thanks.

You will most likely want to go with HDMI to the panel, and optical audio from Blu Ray player to your AV receiver. That is how I have my Bravia 52KDLXBR5 connected--my G-10 is in my Master Bedroom and I use the onboard speakers there, but the principle is the same. If you have Directv, you may experience lip synch issues on certain channels (and it always varies), and you may want to experiment with component connections to the panel, and optical to the receiver to see if it helps. Blu ray should be in synch, though.

I wouldn't use the audio out from the panel to feed the audio to your AV receiver, as you would be processing the signal twice (at the panel and a second time at your AV receiver).

As for the comment to pick up an AV receiver with HDMI--in my case I have a Sunfire Cinema Grand II processor (built in the 90's prior to HDMI), and no way was I "retiring" it and spending $5-7,000 to get the current Sunfire processor with HDMI. Not worth it. The Sunfire processor and amp will likely outlive me.

Just a guess - look at the small display on the front of your cable box. Be sure it shows 1080i (the 8300HD does not offer 1080p so 1080i is the best it offers). If your friend's box is outputing 1080i and you are looking at 480i/p you will see the differences noted.

There are various tutorials on how to set up your cable box.

My Time Warner HD is terrible too. I don't know about your area but in WNY they compress their HD channels big time, in order to offer more HD channels. Which is a joke.

If I could get Satellite or Fios I would do it immediately.

How do Blu-rays look for you? Amazing on my G10.

My Blu rays are amazing i couldn't be happier about that i wonder if AT&T doesn't compress as much as TMWC.

When I ordered from Sears on-line, I was given a choice of delivery dates from a little dropdown box at some point during checking out, including, as Roadking stated, the next day after purchase. I chose to give myself 3 days, (ordered on a Tue. night, and was delivered 5:00 PM that Friday). I had to put my new stand together, clean up (ongoing - I build PCs, so my house is a warehouse), and move my 36" CRT behemoth and stand into the bedroom. Still didn't get it operational until 4:00 ish Sunday afternoon.

Love the 54G10. Most HD broadcast(1080i) content looks great. I don't follow basketball, but I'll join my son tonight to watch the game.

Now to do that break-in via SD.

Doug,

Have you double checked channel/mode settings and security/encryption code settings. Are you using an access control list and haven't added the 50G10 MAC?

It hasn't improved at all.

Lots of great info here. I popped for the P50G10 today from Crutchfield.

I watch mostly Directv HD and PS3 for Bluray.

Now comes the worst part: Waiting For Delivery!!!

I ordered my 54" G10 from Sears mid morning Friday, and it was delivered Sunday--I missed Saturday's delivery cut-off by minutes. I only ever got 1 email, the email that confirmed the sale and stated the delivery date was 5/31/09 Home Delivery.

I got very nervous Saturday evening when I had yet to hear anything when the phone rang, and the recorded message said my delivery window was 9:30AM to 11AM tomorrow. It was around 10 am when they showed.

You may want to talk to Sears--good luck with that. Sears customer service is not great, but the delivery guys sure were. Unboxed it for me, waited for me to assemble the pedestal (I downloaded the instructions ahead of time, so I knew exactly what to do, which bolts went where), and they put it on the pedestal for me. Whole thing took less than 5 minutes.

I got P50G10 from Crutchfield too. They are a class act. Today makes exactly 2 weeks since it arrived and and I'm spending way too much time in front of it! My Directv HD and Bluray have never looked better. You will not regret it.
