Fiber optic question

As most people around here know, you need to use HDMI (or analog outs) to get the new lossless audio codecs.

Why can't you get them over optical audio? I know that you can pass HDMI (audio and video) and control over a fiber optic cable which I thought is all that an optical audio cable is.

Why then can't we get more audio information out of our optical audio cables.

Thanks.

Because the signals over TOSlink (and digital coax) are not content-protected. It is a legal matter, not a technical one.

Interesting. I guess if it comes down to lossy formats but no HDCP there is certainly a market for that.

Thanks.
