Sex Drive is almost a post sex comedy sex comedy, being as much a genre parody as it is a cute story about a loser looking for love. Although it shares the same humanity at heart, the approach is different from the semi self-aware dramatics of the Apatow comedies. Sex Drive does not only not try to hide the fact that the plot is piece meal, its scenes play like individual vignettes and the gratuitous nudity makes no sense, it takes the ball and runs with it. The fun they obviously had with this is utterly infectious, and the unrated version even integrates some bad takes into the film. Pure genius.
If you really like the dramatic approach in the Apatow comedies, however, you may not like this. The characters are similar, but the rest goes in a different direction.
The BD looks quite good, both theatrical and unrated cuts are included. I was a bit dumbfounded that they'd have the menu in 5.1 PCM and the movie only in 640kb DD, but I'll live. No other complaints. If you look at the extra material, you quickly realise there was not a sane person on the set and no one was safe. James Marsden has his own little piece where everyone agrees what an unfunny douche he is and how they're afraid to tell him. Needless to say it's all in jest, James Marsden is an absolute riot in this, as is Seth Green.
The best irreverent nonsense comedy and genre parody in years.
