I was thinking of using the Polk Audio SurroundBar 6000 with my set. Anyone using this sound bar?

this thread has cursed me!

i updated to the unofficial firmware many months back to fix the red flash issue. since then i have been happy with this TV. none of the audio stuttering that others have complained about. I watched the video that odin7 posted:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...0#post19886140
to see what the deal was. I was thinking man, i am glad my tv doesn't do that.

Then just yesterday it happened on my TV! it has NEVER done this before. this damned thread is a curse i tell ya!

I have my KDL-46v5100 hooked up to my PC via HDMI. I have this weird issue where sometimes after turning the TV on, the audio doesn't initialize. In order for it to work, I have to turn the TV off and on again. And then startup WMC or anything else where I can generate sound. It's really annoying because this happens quite frequently.

I've updated to their latest firmware too (8/23/10) and re-flashed with this firmware once or twice now. Nothing has improved.

Anybody know what's up here? I don't think the audio is actually "dropping out" based on what others report. It just doesn't seem to come on when I turn the TV on (or after I leave it idle for a while). The dropping out people are describing seems to be *while* they are watching stuff right? Either way, the symptoms I'm experiencing are probably of the same issue.

Any word when/if Sony will release an officially "audio fix" firmware update on its website to the public?

or is there somewhere to get it like the unofficial firmware to fix the "red flash".

other than the red flash, i have not had any problems with this TV since i bought it about 15 months ago.

about a week ago the audio problems started. now it happens all the time.

since the TV had no problems for 15 months, then the problem started, one can infer something in the TV is degrading. I am not sure how a firmware update is going to fix that. but i am willing to try a firmware update if there is one.

what a POS this TV is. sony should be ashamed of themselves for shipping a TV with quality "issues" like this.

I have not heard anything more, other than they found an issue with some BluRay players, then tweaked that. I am still running the first audio dropout fix (unofficial), and have had NO problems since installing (in October). I'll check back with our friend, and see if he has any expected date for general release...

Much appreciated, mrdjman! Anxiously awaiting the official release of this...

Ok...from what Gary just told me this morning, this is now an 'official' update that the service techs have been using since Jan 01. Customers have to call in and ask for software fix for HDMI audio dropout thru satellite or cable box. You will then be sent a USB with the update on it... I would be specific about it when you call.
My 46" doesn't power anymore. Was working fine for 4 months after the Software upgrade. Now you try to power it up, it goes off in 4 seconds. The Bravia logo doesn't appear, but you can see the TV is on, the sounds comes on while it stays on for 4 seconds(if connected to a cable box)..then it goes off. No blinking green leds after it goes off. Anyone knows what may cause that? I was watching a Blu Ray then boom! Any help would be really apreciated!

So does there exist a fix for BOTH the red flashing AND the sound drop outs? I am using the unofficial fix for the red flashing and while the drop outs aren't all that often (2-4x/month) it is still annoying. Weird thing is that it NEVER seems to happen on my PS3 but does happen on cable -- both use HDMI, well maybe I shouldn't be that surprised that my Sony TV can talk with the Sony PS3...

The current update (that you call in and ask specifically for) only addresses the audio dropout, from what I understand. It will not 'un-do' the red flash update - merely add a fix to the fix...

I'm NOT a Sony employee, nor do I know what i'm talking about on my own...just passing on what I was told by one of the Sony folks who has helped here at the forum before...and hopefully, will continue to do so.

I called Sony for the firmware fix for the audio dropout issue on my V5100. It took a little bit of "convincing" on my part, insisting that there is a post-Aug 2010 firmware available. After some discussion, the CSR I was speaking to eventually admitted that there was another firmware update to fix the audio dropout issue. I should be receiving it in the mail, probably within the next week.

I'm not sure why Sony doesn't post the latest firmware update on their website, and just describe it as something like "updates/enhances various features/components", if they don't want to specifically refer to the audio dropout problem.

Please let us know how that firmware update works. It still sounds to me like the SONY people want to make.believe the audio problem will go away.

Well, I can only speak for my own experience - I've had the update since late October, and I haven't had an audio drop from the TV in the entire time. Prior to that, it was very frequent... Hopefully, you will all have the same experience that I have.
cap70, I've not had the problem so can't advise you but if it's still under warranty I'd call the man. And remember that if you paid by credit card you may have an automatic extra year of coverage (depending on your cc company).

"Convincing" is putting it mildly for me. I'm on the phone right now and trying to get the woman I'm speaking with to send me the post-8/2010 update is like pulling teeth. She keeps insisting that there is no newer update and when I tell her I know other people are having it sent to them, she puts me on hold and comes back with the same story.
Does anyone have a version # for the post-8/2010 update? She keeps asking me for that.

Thanks.

EDIT: I finally gave up. She wouldn't budge on the story that there is no newer update and wouldn't transfer me to a manager. She said she'll send me the newest update (which I'm 99% sure will be from August) and if I still experience the problem then my TV needs servicing (riiiiiiight). The audio dropout isn't even a big deal to me, just a minor nuisance, but if it can be fixed, I'd obviously rather not have to put up with it.

For those who do receive this mysterious update, please keep us posted on how it works and the version # if possible.

The only reference I have been given is it's the E3 update. I'll put a bug in our friend's ear to see if he knows why it's so difficult...but it's out there - trust me.

Why not post the update to the web as was done in the past? If there are separate versions just indicate which TV you have and post your version. At least some folks can get relief that way. Save a lot of grief dealing with Sony support.

There are plenty of free sites available that let you drop files on for download.

I told the Sony customer service rep the same thing, lol... "It exists, trust me." She just kept repeating the same thing over and over... "The latest update I have is the one from the website."

The main reason I haven't done that is I didn't know it was 'out there', and didn't want to tick off our friend at Sony by putting something out that wasn't ready.

The other reason is, I don't want to be held responsible for someone bricking their TV for whatever reason, then blaming me for it because it was 'obviously' the file(s) that I supplied that did it....

I work in the IT field, and I know how that works...

mrd, wise decision. In this day of lawsuits.....

Hi all,

I finally received the latest Sony firmware update for the audio dropout issue in the mail. The USB key is labeled as ER4.12_E3R1 INT AUDIO.

From the Sony website, I previously installed the Aug 2010 KDL-46V5100_ER412_E228 firmware update, so I would be updating the firmware from ER4.12-E228, as displayed on my V5100. The audio continued to dropout just about every day throughout the week, and sometimes multiple times in any given day. Very annoying!!

The latest ER4.12_E3R1 INT AUDIO update installed today in just 2-3 minutes, displaying the message "updating submicro" on the screen. Once I pulled the USB drive, the HDTV self power-cycled.

The firmware version on my 46V5100 now displays as ER4.12-E328 << note the "E3" in the firmware version.

Now I'm going to "see what happens" as I watch TV over the next week or so.... I'll post a comment in this thread in a few days.
Hopefully I can report back to say that the audio dropout issue has been finally resolved

Well, glad to see they actually sent out the Audio Update...so persistence must pay off. I hope you have the same good results that I have had thus far

I'm reporting back A LOT sooner than I expected, since i have bad news:

After I applied the ER4.12_E3R1 INT AUDIO update this morning, a while later I powered on the tv with the cablebox, and there was NO audio on any HD or SD channel. So the updated completely cut-off the audio altogether! I also tested my blu-ray player, and still no audio whatsoever - complete silence from the speakers. I checked the volume level and the mute setting. I also tried the other HDMI ports = no joy.

odin7, you are ABSOLUTELY right... SONY want people to make.believe the audio problem will go away.

I since re-installed ER412_E228, that was there previously. The sound is now working again on my 46V5100. I'm back to square one.... I will probably not be a repeat Sony customer again.
Wow. Sad news, BCF. But thanks for taking the time to let us know. I'll certainly not bother to get that firmware "update".
Not the news I was hoping to hear (and i'm sure you weren't, either). I have passed your findings, word for word, to Gary at Sony... I'm really bummed...I was SO psyched that the fix was there. It is for mine - hopefully, i'm not a fluke, but I find it extremely difficult to believe that I was the only field tester...

Sony certainly isn't making any friends...including me.
