Yes, you can go back to the older firmware. This is exactly what I did and everything works much better.
No matter what Sony claims, the latest firmware is definitely worse for me. I have never had any audio drop-outs maybe because I use an home theater system.
Since I have an all-Sony setup, I was hoping they could get their act together. Which obviously is not the case.
The idea of HDMI and HDMI control is great but it is just not robust. Sometimes I have to switch it off and on again in order to make some components work again. I lean towards the opinion that this is mostly a xxV5100 issue, but who can really say if it is not a interaction between two or more components.
