The issue that im facing is random hdmi handshake issues when the audio output changes on the ps3. Im getting black and white flashing. After trying a veriety of settings with the help of several members here we isolated it to the tv. When the issue occurs, plugging the hdmi cable into a diffeeent tv immediately resolves it. So at first i was wondering if the tv didnt support certain ps3 output options. Turns out that the issue persists no matter what.

The first thing I would do is contact Sony because I know they had a firmware update that fixed some HDMI issues like the ones you are describeing. I have never had an issue with my tv like that so I consider myself lucky I guess. Second thing you could do is reset your tv which means reset your tv to its factory default settings, unplug the tv for 10 to 15 seconds then plug it back in. It sucks because you have to put your tv back on the settings you have it on but that might solve the problem. If not contact Sony like I said because they may have a fimware update that might fix the problem. If not then you may have to have the HDMI ports replaced. I hope everything works out. Let me know.

Lou, if you have the KDL-52V5100, PM me, and I will send you the old firmware.

Sony's new firmware is faulty and causes all kinds of HDMI issues, which they refuse to fix.

If you install the old firmware, you will have no troubles.

Italy, Looking at the firmware updates there has been at least 2 with a large amount of HDMI (especially audio) "fixes". Do you think the old firmware will do the trick?

Im having an issue where my old receiver (likely with a older HDMI standard) works perfectly..

The new receiver causes all sorts of issues with the cablebox/ps3.

This all goes to show you how piss poor sony support is. First they come out with a majorly FLAWED firmware. Then no matter who you call or email at sony, they tell you that you are screwed cause they have no solution, and they do not and will not give you prior firmware. Way to Go Sony.

I have bought Sony products for years. NO More.

I will e honest and that is I was very upset with Sony over not having a salution to fixing the last firmware update but thanks to italystyle it got corrected. Now it wont prevent me from buying Sony products again because they are not the only ones who release faulty Firmware updates. Samsung, LG ect have done it as well. All its taught me is dont always trust firmware updates because they can be more harmful then good.

I agree. What is annoying is, that you know that Sony has the old firmware. They refuse to give it to customers. In fact, all they do is recommend for you to hire a service center to come to your, at your own expense, and see if the TV can be repaired. BUT the service centers don't have the old firmware either!!!

It is poor customer service. From now on, I know now to keep ALL copies of firmware.

What the old firmware fixes is the "Control For HDMI" function which got all screwed up with the new firmware update. That was my main issue because I use that feature for my Sony Blu ray player. Other then that I didnt have any other issues with the new firmware update that I was aware of maybe italystyle can point out the other isues it caused. I have the 46V5100 the slightly smaller version of your 52V5100, same model just different size. That all being said I have been more then happy with my tv, in fact the PQ and black levels I would put right on par with your newer LED tv's and that is one big reason why I have not upgraded and wont anytime in the foreseeable future. This tv gets a bad rap because of Sony's screw ups and thats sad because its a much better LCD tv then it gets credit for. But the old firmware will fix the HDMI problems so if you can get your hands on it it will do the job.

When I upgraded my receiver to Denon AVR 2312 from an older Sony AVR (DG720) I had HDMI issues on every port. Loss of signal, black screen, etc. Luckily have extended warranty with largest family owned retail electronics company in US. They have a great service dept. Sent out tech - have, on site, replaced the main board twice. No luck. They took my set 46V5100 into their shop that they can find no receiver that works with that model set and the most recent firmware. However, I was told they are working with Sony to try and resolve. This retailer, I believe, has a bit of clout. So perhaps Sony will finally do something.

It is incomprehensible that Sony ignores the HDMI handshake issue when so many people are having issues. IMHO they cannot fix the problem with new firmware. But that is just an opinion.

By end of week either problem will be resolved (highly doubtful) or I will get a replacement set of equal capability. It will not be a Sony if I can help it.

I'm with you italystyle. Ever since I went back to the previous firmware update, which you were nice enough to send me, I havent had a single issue and my tv is hooked up to my Denon 589 AVR. Everything is working beautifully. As I said before the thing I learned is that firmware updates can either be a good thing or a bad thing and most of the time they dont fix an issue they only make it worse. But again Sony is not the only company that has caused this problem. Samsung, LG ect have all realsed bad firmware updates. My suggestion to anyone is this: If your tv, blu ray player ect dont need a firmware update then dont do it. Theres no need to fix something that dont need to be fixed, period!

Hi. I am looking to buy the KDL-40V5100 if it is still available. I want a Sony, 40" and the best CCFL model they made. Is the V5100 series that?

Did Sony ever make a better model? A higher-end option to the 5100 series? I'm looking for the best they had before the jump to LED.

Yes they did make a better model then the V5100 series and that was the XBR9. But the V5100 series is a good tv. I have had mine for 2 plus years now and havent had one issue until they released their new firmware update for it but thats been fixed. You can still find a 40 inch V5100 online for a good price.

My set is still in repair at an authorized Sony repair facility. According to the service manager they tried 3 different receivers with my KDL-46V5100. Additionally they tried another (unreleased firmware version to no avail.

I would stay away from the V series if you ever think you might connect the TV to an AVR.

Mine is hooked up to my Denon 589 AVR and I have no problems at all. I have had my tv for 2 years and never had an issue except for the recent firmware problem and even then it wasnt a huge issue. You may have gotton a bad tv which does happen from time to time with any manufactuer. Maybe you should have Sony replace it?

I can't say I've been 'problem free', but as I've stated in other threads, my only issue with this tv is the random black screen here and there while watching cable. Since I turned off HDMI control I haven't had a problem with the black screens hitting the DVD or blu ray player.

I have the 46V5100. The only issue I ever really had with it was the red flashing (which drove me crazy). Ever since I installed the "unofficial" firmware that fixed the red flashing (a year or two back), it has been working great. My main uses are over-the-air HD, Blu-ray, and a media streamer box. I have intentionally not upgraded to newer "official" firmware versions out of fear that something would break.

Actually, my only complaint with the TV is that it will only output 2-channel PCM (via the optical output) and not the full 5.1 bitstream. Had I known that when I bought it, I probably would not have gotten it. Oh well.

Now, however, I fear the TV's days are numbered. It still works great, but lately I've been thinking it might be time to get something a little bigger (about the 55" size range) now that it is in a new location at home. Will my next one be Sony or not? Hummm, right now I'm kind of leaning to "not". We'll see.
