Looking for 24" LCD monitor advice - where to discuss such topics?

Thread Starter
I'm looking for some advice on selecting a 24" LCD monitor for my main workstation (a non TV/video application).

I wasn't sure whee to post this question. I figured the LCD display section is reserved for TV/video displays. Are you discussing such topics on other forums than avsforum.com? In general I'm looking for a forum to discuss general PC related topics.

In any case, is the Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP the best LCD out there? Should I even bother looking at NEC or Samsung displays?

I have two Samsung 24" monitors. One at home and one at work. 204b and 2433bwx. LOve 'em both.

When I last looked for an LCD monitor, I spend some time in the Displays subforum of HardForum.

Some of the best monitor reviews on the net can be found here:

As for the monitor you are asking about, I've heard good things but never used one. It is a PVA panel vs IPS or the more common/cheaper TN kind (look up the differences if this makes no sense.)

Be aware that this is a wide gamut panel. Any programs that are not color managed will tend to make the colors really intense neon (specifically reds and greens.) If you aren't looking for a wide gamut display specifically for photo work it would probably be best to skip the wide gamut kind. That said, if you do want to do photo work, wide gamut screens allow you to see colors you never thought your camera was capable of capturing (as long as you use color managed programs.)

I have an HP lp2475w which is a 24" IPS panel with similar specs (and similar price.) I use it specifically for photo work and it is beautiful. With an EyeOne Display hardware calibration puck and software, it calibrates extremely close to accurate such that you really don't need to rely on gfx card based profile adjustments. therefore the colors are accurate *and* smooth with no breaks/banding in color gradients. It plays video fine, although I really don't use it much for that.
