Epson Powerlite 1080 - Blue Dot on Screen? - Page 2

Chances are I won't be able to even notice when sitting at normal viewing distance, but I'm going to do some tests later. You are correct in that photo is from the lower left of the screen. I'll have to check the center as well.

I do have a feeling it will be much less seen when viewing content over text.

I have 3 projectors in the house now, the one new one from VA with the blue dot issue, and the 2 Epson replacements (refurbs?). I'll hook them up one at a time and compare convergence.

If the new model from VA with the blue dot has the best convergence I think I'll try calling VA support to see if they would swap me out for a definite NEW unit. I'm not 100% trusting Epson on these.

I'm still hoping a tech might see this post and be able to verify if Epson can clear the data in the hidden service menu or if it's more reliable. As the post above says, I understand refurbs are fine, but I paid for new parts and not used ones.

Thanks for the reply.

I put in a request with Visual Apex to call me tomorrow - Maybe I'll give them a call and see. At this point, I kept the best of the 2 refurbs (?) that Epson sent out as far as convergence and picture. The new one from VA with the bad pixel just has to go.

I guess in the end I'm probably better off keeping whatever Epson sent than waiting for Visual Apex to see if they'll even send another out and allow me to send the defect back.

So, that's the end of that I guess - Epson has been nice to deal with on the phone, I just wish I could comfortably know for sure if these were refurbs or not, or if Epson just claims refurbs are new ones.

I would at least switch the lamp from the known to be "new" projector to the one you are keeping. At least you will know the lamp is brand new.

Have you had a chance to watch a movie yet?

Good point -- I guess if Epson had the ability to reset the service menu, it is possible that the lamp in the replacement they sent is less than new. Swapping the lamp isn't a bad idea at all.

I have run some video on it but nothing in full because I am still looking for a decent deal on an AMP for down here. So, no sound so far.

I don't think there's a way to reset the runtime in the service menu. I'd guess someone turned it on and it was an out of the box failure, so it has zero hours. Either that or they actually did send you a new unit.

If that's the case, then I feel much better about keeping what they sent. I realize I will never know 100% for sure, but at least I have a 2 year warranty in case anything wacky happens. Both service menus on the 2 replacements they sent had 0 hours on them, and both replacements sent were 1 serial number apart, which certainly points to the fact they are new off the line.

I appreciate all the advice from everyone in this thread -- Now if I could only find a decent deal on an Onkyo SR606 or a refurb -- That's the one I want.

Track down a 805 refurb. Much better amp.

BradP-

Do you happen to have a computer connected to your Epson projector, using a 1920x1080 resolution by any chance? If you do (or you can set one up for a test), please look at this Web site I created a while back.

http://216.101.184.5/epson/

It has tests for a color problem that may affect all Epson Home Cinema 1080s (but not the 1080UBs) when using the HDMI input. Speaking of Epson customer service problems, I have still never got a good response on this problem in over a year and a half of trying. Thanks.

I own a 606, it works great with the Epson 6500UB.

Bradp, I wanted to let you know I received my 1080 from VA yesterday. The box looks exactly like the first one you received. I figured you might want to know that.

Also, the convergence on mine is slightly better than yours. On mine red is off by about 1 vertical pixel. It is barely noticeable but if I took a close up pic like you did I believe it would look similar to yours. Although on mine the blue is not off at all, that I can see. Just the red is off a bit.

beekermartin - what do you think of the overall picture? I'm considering buying one of those units and just wondered what your impression of it is.

I am not ready to give a review just yet. I will say that I watched the new Bond movie last night on BR and it looked great. I didn't really notice the difference in resolution over my HC720 but 1080p 24 fps did appear smoother. Also, the blacks seemed to be a bit better with the 1080. I need to watch and tweak a lot more before I can post a full review. I will say that ,so far, it appears to be a nice improvement over the HC720 but not night and day by any means. I will post a full comparison once I've had time to watch and tweak on the 1080.

Thanks beeker, for letting me know - It is peculiar that the boxes from Epson have the extra stickers on them. They do a really good job to try and convince you it's a new unit, but I really do believe they are sending carefully packaged refurbs. As it stands, I am waiting on my Visual Apex rep to get back to me (They say they are talking with their Epson rep to get to the bottom of it).

For now I am still holding onto the replacement Epson sent with the best convergence and the original "blue dot" defect from VA.

Thanks for letting me know what yours was like. Post a photo of your convergence on that same text from the same distance I did if you get a chance, and also share your settings once you get 'er tweaked!

Will do.

I'm having what I think is the same problem. I purchased my 1st Epson 5010 Powerlite just before the holidays and noticed a faint blue dot appearing in the lower left corner when the image should have been totally black. I called Epson and they sent a replacement (refurbished) which arrived today. I hooked it up and surprise - another blue dot. This time towards the center of the screen approx 1/3rd of the way down from the top.

Here's a pic showing the location of the dot (circled):
Blue dot projected by Epson 5010 (in the circle). This is the 2nd unit I purchased - both of which had similar problems in different screen locations.

Photo of the screen/dot at 100%:
Blue dot projected by Epson 5010 shown at full size to illustrate the blue dot a little better.. This is the 2nd unit I purchased - both of which had similar problems in different screen locations.

I have confirmed this is not the signal being sent to the pj by connecting a totally different source directly to the Epson with 2 different HDMI cables and the dot is still there.

Does anyone have any suggestions? This is really bothering me given the amount I paid for what I thought was a high quality system.

Regards,
John

I just called about my replacement Epson 5010 also having a similar blue dot and they said they are sending a brand new unit. Since the 5010 is no longer being made, I am curious to see if a 5010 arrives or if they are sending a 5020.

Hopefully this resolves the Blue Dot issue!
I was pleasantly surprised when Epson sent a brand new 5020 to replace the 5010 I was having issues with (see previous 2 posts). I set up the new unit and so far it appears to have solved the ghostly blue dot issues I was seeing with the 2 earlier units.

I am very pleased with Epson and how they handled this. They recognized I was having issues with the original 5010 and the refurbished 5010 so didn't try to keep sending me different refurbished units and instead agreed to send a brand new model. smile.gif

Additionally, they are pretty quick to ship replacements (arrived in 2 days) and returning the old one is pretty easy - just drop it off at fedex with the prepaid labels they sent me.

Overall very happy now with my Epson purchase.
