Need advice on new HT Receiver, coming from Marantz

Thread Starter
My Marantz SR7000 (I think, from memory) from around 1998 or so has been serving me very well, paired up with my Paradigm speakers. Its 5.1, doesn't switch anything, doesn't even have ProLogic IIx. What it has done is given me years of incredible 5.1 channel sound from DVD's.

But now, its getting a little long in the tooth. I'm tempted to upgrade it. Get myself something that will take HDMI, take advantage of the new sound standards with BluRay and so forth..and maybe eliminate some of the switches I have in my system right now for Component and HDMI sources.

My first thought was to go right back to Marantz, but before I do that..and drop a grand or so.....can someone tell me what Denon has in the same $800-$1k pricerange? I don't really want to go Onkyo....Marantz and Denon are my first go-twos in this pricerange, can anyone comment if they are worthy of the $700+ pricetags?

Thanks.
I'm not quoting model numbers because, honestly, i don't know them. When i was more "in tune" with receivers I knew all the "this Onkyo has bad power supplies, this one has a bad feedback hum, this Denon is prone to overheating and this harmon Kardon has faulty DAC's" and so on and so on.

I imagine its still like that...so....where do the Marantz and Denons fail, if at all?

you might consider saving a few bucks on Marantz refurbished receivers, sold by an authorized Marantz dealer (so the factory warranty is good).

Denon 2309 or 2809, or Marantz SR5003 or SR6003. The Denons give you an extra HDMI input at 4, while the Marantz models have a 3-year warranty (plus 2 HDMI outputs on the SR6003). "Worthy" is, of course, subject, but IMO - yes. Any of these models should serve your needs well for many years to come! Good luck.

By ruling out Onkyo, you've eliminated arguably the highest value available. You could look at Harman Kardon (Logic 7 is a great proprietary matrixing DSP). I love Harman International's speakers, but I haven't been impressed with the build quality of the last few HK receiver series.

definitely consider Yamaha as a competiter to Denon and Marantz.
You could also look at NAD receivers. Unlike these other brands, you'll get torroidal transformers, beefy heatsinks, miniscule distortion, etc., but probably less feature glitz.

This same website accessories4less sells a refurbed SR6003 for $748 HERE

or for the same $750 you can get a brand new SR6003 HERE using the coupon code AFLAUD25

I think I'd rather have a brand new one with full warranty

Yes I believe the Marantz 6003 is worthy at that price range but I also feel that the SC05 from Pioneer's Elite line is a better one than that. And it cost less. 4 HDMI in 1 out. ICE amps. If you need the 2 HDMI's out the SC07 cost ~ $200 more than the SC05. Either of these have more power than the Marantz(not enough that you would actually notice) but its there none the less.

I guess I haven't looked around much but I've never seen the SC-05 for less than $750 as the SR6003 costs.
One downside to the SC-05 is that it doesn't do video processing of HDMI inputs, doesn't do video processing of 1080i/720p component inputs and has no HD radio. But if you can find it for under $750 then it sounds like a great deal as it does have other features to make up for what it lacks.

Here's the deal. And they are authorized.
