Sony G70 vs. PLV-Z3000 and Panny HT projectors

Guys-

I've had a Sony G70 sitting around here for a LONG time that I haven't had the capability of really setting up giving my living conditions. I'm moving soon and will be back having a theater setup and trying to consider what to do.

I had an old Sanyo PLV-Z3 at my last theater (my old place) but sold that and acquired a G70 at a really good price. I set it up to give it a quick test on a wall and it seems to be strong, no burn-in and about 4000 hours.

Can anyone give a comparison to one of these new budget Sanyo or Panasonic HT projectors vs. the G70? Is it still a killer vs the new crop of LCD technology? I have the option to pick up an older Pioneer Pro-720HD rear projection CRT tv (I set one up for my parents and it's an absolutely stunning 65" set, killing any plasma I've seen).

Anyway, just looking for some feedback if it's worth getting the big ole' G70 working in this day and age of tiny projectors

Thanks for your feedback guys..

I don't think any projector is going to deliver as good a picture on a relatively small screen that the G70 will deliver. However, that being said - if you are going to do a 10 foot diagonal screen, need hdmi inputs for BluRay, or if you do not want to deal with all the calibration - set up issues with the G70 - then digital is the way you want to go.

But again - I am not sure that there is any projector that can equal a well callibrated-tuned G70 on a 92 inch screen - Maybe an RS20 w/BluRay combo.

One last thought - from memory - I thought the G70 also needed a really good scaler to make it shine - which is another thing to think about in terms of cost.

No scaler needed for Sony G70.
There are pro's and con's with digital vs a high end CRT such as yours.
Have it set up and you will be surprised how good it is if the tubes are in excellent shape. If not the JVC's are nice and prices are within reach.

JVC will out shine the G70 is lumen by about twice but black level falls short. Color of G70 is more accurate but JVC is easy to set up. It is toss up in my opinion. I have a XG1352LC and JVC SR2 and like them both.

I had a G70 for 7 years, with a stewart 1.3 100" diagonal screen, and professional calibration. It looked beautiful. But when a 2.35 aspect dvd played the reduced size was simply killing me, I wanted the 'cinema' experience. I can't speak to the projectors you've mentioned, but switching to the JVC RS2 and then again to the RS20, with anamorphic lens, and a screen 120" x 51" filled to every corner with a bluray scope movie....well, I got the 'cinema' effect that I wanted ( room is a 19x14 bat cave ) AND I really like the brighter picture, colors are more vibrant (punchy), black level is excellent and I get a better sense of 3 dimensionality. I would never go back. This is to be considered in all fairness, I only had component DVHS and OTA high def feeds to the sony with 5000 hours when sold, which resolved up to 1600x1200, not the total 1920x1080 of the digital projectors.

I certainly do not miss the 'roar' and heat of the crt directly overhead, never realized how loud it was until I got a digital projector that sits about 7 feet behind me.
