I own a ps3 and also the panasonic 80. I use the panasonic 80 as my main player.

Jacob,

Really. I thought you would have used the PS3 as your main player as it doesn't "freeze" on the odd BD like the Panasonic 60/80 are known to do.

Any how, I'm wondering if there isn't a way for me to reset my 60 at home.

This past Friday I received a firmware 1.7 CD-R from Panasonic Canada. I thought how good of them. Popped it in my player. L DRV blinked at first. Then UP D NG. Tray opens (should stay closed till FINISHED is blinking). I close the tray. Then it blinks L FVU. Tray opens again. I close it again. Then it blinks L DRV again.

When I pop in the disc with the 1.9 version PANA_DVD.FRM file on it (which I burned). The tray keeps opening. Before blinking L FVU.

I think some data is stuck in the buffer. If I could clear it. Any ideas?

I would suggest getting a replacement on that player.
I prefer bitstreaming from my panasonic 80.. so the stand alone get used more often then the ps3.
I have not had that many problems with the 80 on the freezing.. I had a problem playing the star wars clone wars on it. that is about it.

Jacob,

I just might. But since Panasonic Canada messed up my 60 I'm still going to follow up on that till they solved this. Either with some fix or a replacement. It was working fine (well with the odd instance of freezing) before I popped their 1.7 firmware CD-R in.
good luck with it. .seems like they sent you a faulty disc or something.
too bad that you cann't download from the internet. that is the easiest way to upgrade the firmware.

Jacob,

Yes. It's most likely there WAS something wrong with their disc. I even burnt a new disc, for the newer firmware version 1.9, using the recommended unzip program Stuffit. Which unzips the EXE file into a Unix Executable. Still no help. My player just keeps spitting out the disc.Blinking L FVU.

Sort of looks like Panasonic Canada owes me a new machine. Unless they can tell me how to clear the buffer. Or reset the player. Get it out of this "install mode". Does any one here know how to do this? I tried unplugging/plugging while it was ON. No help.
I remember having to call panasonic to ask about clearing the SD card to use it again. it was corrupt or something since I was not able to do the bdlive with watchmen bluray.
once I got it cleared then it worked fine.

Need some suggestions on the best hookup and settings. I have the bd60,a Yamaha RX-V463 and a brand new samsung 50" plasma PN50B550. The yamaha has HDMI but im not using because of the known dark issues associated with it. I currently have hdmi from the bd60 to the tv and I am running optical out of the bd60 to my Yamaha receiver. Is this the best hook up? What would the best settings be on the bd60 etc.? I would appreciate any input.
if you had gotten the panasonic 80 then you can use the analog for the trueHD/DTSHD. so then you don't need to hook up the HDMI picture to the receiver.

Set the players audio's to bitstream this would be the best setup for the devices you have placing top importance on the video. Bitstream audio will sound fine for now. Look to replace the receiver for one that doesn't crush the blacks allot do though. I think people have had good luck with Marantz receivers not crushing blacks.

I had an onkyo 706 that with a test pattern showed blacks weren't crushed, even so blacks were looking strangely ink blotted in look.

If you want the High res audio but are not ready to pop for a new receiver you may want to consider this splitter from monoprice, with additional cables and shipping it should be less than $50.
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

One HDMI out to the TV for Video and one HDMI out to the Yamaha for audio. I would check your TV 1st to ensure you can turn off HDMI Audio so it doesn't tell the player that it only wants 2 ch audio. That's about the only gotcha I can think of.

BTW, my receiver doesn't support hi res audio yet. The low res audio is very good, but as guitarman stated, "for now".
Ill try those suggestions. I'm not ready at this point to upgrade the receiver. I've read some where that the hdmi splitters will not work because of the handshake issue- delay etc. My picture is the most important priority, then audio. The dark issue with the yamaha 463 hdmi out is very obvious. If I do enough of the honey do lists I can use the analogy of a 8 cylinder system only running on 6 cylinders. Yes, It has worked in the past! thanks all!

lol, you guys are confusing me now. So is BD80 worth buying or not?

I am looking for Image Quality.

Does it output YCC with BtB and WtW informations?

Because I am planning to do calibration with it connected to my A650.

I just wish that the Image Quality will be better than my PS3 so that I am not wasting money on it. But I think it would definitely be better than PS3 in terms of Image Quality. The Stand-Alone BD Players uses Hardware decoding and image processing for BD Movies, whereas the PS3 is using software for them by its cell processors.

Update: After reading more reviews about it......I am gonna put my money down on it.

Got my first freeze last night on Cutthroat Island, which is only the fourth BD I've watched on this unit.

Just a quick one that didn't repeat in the same spot right? I'm shopping for a player right now and I have read every single post in this thread. It seems that every new BD player has some issue reported with it.
um.....the only concerns that are mostly seen here is the "freeze" issue.

And that is completely random and not 100% repeatable or panasonic would have been able to duplicate the problem and probably fix it. I read the thread, every single post. I'm well informed before I buy something.
This is indeed a looong thread!

I bought the DB60 and have 3 complayns :

1. If I start a blu-ray movie and then power off the unit after a couple of minuts, I will have to setup language and find my last position in the movie manually. I know that this have to do with java menus.

2. Layerbreakings in DVD movies are clearly noticed, this was not existing on my old budget Pioneer DVD player.

3. The player do not remember DVD position? It behaves just as with the blu-ray disc!?

I think that theses are points that do take a big step back in the development compare to my old pioneer DVD player.

Yes, it was definately the dreaded freeze problem.
How exactly is this "freeze" like?
A "freeze"...is a long pause...for me it was up to 10 seconds long...video would "freeze" and there would be no audio. Then the movie would continue. Only happens once per BD. At least in my case.

Is it repeatable? Same spot on the same disc? Didn't try. But there is one "freeze" in the cave scene in the Iron Man BD. Then there is one in the Fifth Element BD (RMST) when the "warriors" walk into ZORG's complex for the weapons demo.

I'm just waiting around for Panasonic Canada to get back to me on my problem. Jammed machine due to their bad firmware upgrade (v.1.7) disc they sent me. Was working fine before that. And was before I got my internet hooked up. Otherwise I would have just used the ethernet port.

I received my BD60 player on Friday. So far, I think the PQ out shines that of my, now defunct, PS3.
Little do you know your new 60 will periodically "freeze" which your "defunct" PS3 didn't.
This BD80 will output YCC format with BtB + WtW informations?

Because I don't like RGB format and the Full "Dynamic" Range.

Periodically means at regular intervals, like a clock striking 12. Nobody has claimed that until now. FWIW, I have had one real 5-10 second freeze in 2 months of use, about 20 blu-ray discs, all rentals. A "freeze" during the fighting Nubian Ibex scene of Planet Earth, disc 2, turned out to be a defect in the disc since it happened again when I moved to the same spot. Maybe I don't get many freezes is because I frequently pause playback for my own purposes. Maybe that relieves the freeze potential. :-)

This is EXACTLY the kind of misinformation & F.U.D. that we don't need spread on this forum, or anywhere else for that matter.
There is already enough misconceptions about this freezing already.
Let's keep to the truth and facts:
There is NO periodic freezing, as it does NOT follow any pattern or schedule.
There is NO proof that every player suffers from freezing.
This freezing is "COMPLETELY RANDOM" , "NOT REPEATABLE" and has NOT occurred on every player.
Can I do HD -- which I know would be limited to 1080 I -- via COMPONENT VIDEO and audio via HDMI?

Will the 80 and/or the 60 allow HD output @ 1080 interlaced while the audio is output via HDMI?

The download manual is annoyingly vague and confusing on this point.

I have a CRT 9 inch FP running at 1080 P with a scaler
that converts the 1080 I component output of my current
player, Samsung 1400.

Does anyone have a similar set up with either the 60 or the 80.

If I missed any salient posts in my search please
steer me to them.

thanks,

Yep. Wrong word. I meant "sporadically". Freudian slip. Though, I haven't had a chance to test if it is "periodic".

In any case, I called Panasonic Canada's Customer Service this morning. Now I have to bring my BD60 to a service center. Q@)_#)@!!! All because Panasonic Canada sent me a faulty firmware upgrade disc. You'd think they could get something as simple as this right. Actually how could they get this wrong?? It's just a matter of burning one FRM file onto a CD-R. LOL!

Yes, I believe so. See p34 of the manual. Set HDMI Video to Off and HDMI Audio to On. That allows you to set the component video output to 1080i and, presumably, use the HDMI connection for audio. I can't test this myself as I lack HDMI on my receiver. But, I think that's the way it works.

This issue is so overblown. There are probably a few players that are having major problems (as there are in any manufactured item), but the freezing problem is not widespread. I have probably played 100 hours or so of content and have had a momentary freeze one time. The disc resumed without issue after about two seconds. Incidentally, I have not had a freeze since I disabled BD-Live functionality (have never seen any BD-Live content that was even remotely interesting). I don't know if there is a correlation, but I will continue to take note of how the player behaves with this turned off.
