No, I think just the analogs and HDMI only. I believe optical/coax is limited to 2-ch. PCM.

The S/PDIF protocol used for optical and coax digital connections is limited to two channels of PCM. When the player decodes a multichannel track or plays a multichannel PCM track, it downmixes to stereo for output over S/PDIF.

"I believe optical/coax is limited to 2-ch. PCM."

Then a dvd player decodes dolby/dts has to use hdmi even for non high def audio? Or its analog out?

I'd have to hook up my coax to my Pioneer sd-dvd player and see what happens.

Yes. That's why people usually set their DVD players to bitstream.
Its been so long since I used coax/optical for anything I don't remember how I had it set up. Maybe avr did decoding and sd-dvd player bitstreamed it via digital?

I already tried this as it seemed like a logical fix.
Unfortunately it makes no difference on or off.
Still changes the 7.1 sound setting every time the unit powers off.
I am totally bummed that this is not working correctly, as blu-ray picture quality on the Panny 80 is much better than my previous Sony S550.
At this point I am going to send it back, and give the New Oppo 83 a try.

I have a few questions though.

1. I tried to do the firmware update and it does not seem to be working for me. I took some phone wire and hooked it up to the lan and the other end to both my phone line as well as the DSL outlet and tried to download. I received a message that said downloading was unavailable. Should I have it hooked up to the tv or the DISH receiver or was I doing it correctly by hooking it straight to the Blu Ray player?

2. Is there a way that I can hook up the tv as well as the BD60 to be wireless like my laptop? That is how I have the DLS router arranged.

3. Also, I was hoping that the remote for my tv would totally replace the BD60 remote but not all the features are available on the tv remote, Such as setup, drive, status, function and re-master...which I am still learning about.

4. Or, can I use the dvd remote for the tv? But I am missing buttons for the tv, dbs and a few others. I wish I could use one remote for everything without having to buy one of those 100 dollar remotes.

But if I can get the firmware update done that would be a good start.

Thanks

Also, I just have it hooked up with an hdmi cable

Works like a charm and setup was a breeze; literally one button connectivity. Look around for the best price, obviously. I paid $58.

Thanks for your help.
I went out to buy a belkin adapter and the guy sold me on a wireless bridge for $99. I got it home and pulled it out of the box and I was like...this looks like my router for my DSL. So I pulled the DSL router out of a spare bedroom and postioned it under the tv, plugged it in and voila'...it worked. I boxed up the bridge and I'll return it tomorrow.

The firmware update was 1.5 and it only took a few minutes to download.

I am going to call Panasonic and see if there is a way I can use one remote for both functions...tv and blu ray.

Also, can you / we use Netflix on this or is that a feature for Sony players.

One more...when I went to VIERA link the weather default automatically went to New York. I tried a few things to make DALLAS a permanent entry but it was not working for me. Is there a way to make the change permanent?

Is there a way I can use my wireless laptop to project onto the tv..it's a 42 inch Panny PZ85? I know I am suppose to use a DVI / HDMI cable , but I am trying to find a way around it. Everything else is wireless, why not this?

Thanks for everyone's help... Hope everyone enjoys their Easter Sunday.

Try to reset your receiver.

I have checked the features on the panny web site and I can not find out if either machine BD 60/80 plays MP 3 discs. I know there is an inmproved sound system with the units and I wondered if anyone has a definitive answer on that point.
Just as a point of interest the new sony 560 plays MP 3 discs.

Why did you switch from the Sony 550 to the Panasonic BD80 ? I am trying to decide between these two players..

Yes, they both play mp3 from CD-R, DVD-R and USB.

So, I'll ask again, what audio settings are you using on your player?

I'm programming my Logitech One remote control to add a DVD activity for the Panasonic DMP-BD60 and found that the remote only has one IR command to toggle power. Usually, there is a separate command for powering on and powering off the unit. Does anyone know if this is a limitation of the unit or is the Logitech database not complete?
I use the "open tray" command for power on.

A TIP FOR 5.1 ANALOG CONNECTING! After 3 days of hookup hell with my new DB80, I finally realized it was never going to work unless I also hooked up the 2 stereo channels. I never intended to use the stereo channels, so I didn't hook them up. This confused the player and all I could get was stereo. It's the little things that can kill you.

Usually there is only a single power toggle IR command. What you're referring to are discrete IR commands. Many devices don't have them. I just checked remote central and did find a Pronto CCF file which says it includes discrete IR codes for power. I don't know if they work or not but sometimes they do. I also see some raw hex codes for Panny DVD players listed there in the discrete codes section, those may work as well. I'll give them a try and post results later today.

Do you have a 5.1 or a 7.1 system? If 5.1, then the regular stereo outputs are not used. If 7.1, you change the player setup from 2ch + 5.1ch to 7.1ch and hook the rear speakers to the regular stereo outputs.

You don't need to hookup the regular stereo outputs to get 5.1. And neither of those two configuration settings will affect the 5.1 outputs. So, did you make any other changes when you hooked up the extra two cables?

I just confirmed the following discrete power on/off codes originally posted for the BD30 at remote central also work on my BD60. (These are in Pronto HEX format)

Panasonic finally replied to my inquiry regarding the DVD layer change and aspect control on the component outputs. According to them the layer change can't be addressed in firmware and the pause will always exist. Also, they claim the aspect control works on any connection so this may imply my Pioneer 510 doesn't detect the ID-1 flag if that's how they're indicating full vs. widescreen. Neither of these is a deal breaker but they are somewhat discouraging. Oh well.

I also had some troubles, I was getting stereo only but after 45 mins I got it going. For a 5.1 system set it to 2+ 5ch, go into the speaker setting and turn OFF the surround back speakers (page 37 of manule) + turn off the secondary audio (page 33).

You don't need to turn off secondary audio to get multichannel. But, glad you got it working.

Given I like the blu-ray PQ better on the Panny 80 vs my Sony BDP-S550, I am really considering giving another 80 a try.
Maybe I just got a defective unit, and a new one will output 7.1 analog correctly.
In regards to PQ, the Sony S550 player's PQ is very good, but doesn't quite have the 3-D pop the Panny has.
Audio on the Sony's 7.1 analog works flawlessly, if you take into account a major drop in LFE output.
The Panny's LFE output is also affected by this as well, but not nearly as much as the Sony.
jmacool - If your problem occurs when DD and DTS are set to bitstream, you are playing a DD or DTS track, and secondary audio is off, then it can't have anything to do with the player. The decoding and processing are all happening in the receiver.

All players output LFE 10db low by design (15db if speakers are set to small). The sub must be boosted by the receiver or at the sub itself. I have not heard any reports that either player outputs LFE more or less than the expected -10db.

Ok, I never said it was the player or the receiver, I just know that there is some kind of communication issue between them. Like I stated previously the player was playing music, then the DVD comentary was activated after it was turned off the music was gone. I then fiddled with my Onkyo and changed a setting and the music came back. Now I have an HD ready receiver and the same issue is back??? If this is happening on both receivers it seems like it might be an issue with the player not the receiver.

How does the start up/load time compare with the sony 550?

Hello, New to Blu-ray I recently purchased a Panasonic DMP-BD605 from Sams. I have upgraded the firmware via the internet. Still has a problem with not playing the BOLT Blu-ray disk. I have only played 3-4 disks so far. I'm conerned about time between firmware updates. I bought Bolt as it had great review for video quality. Spent $30 and its a no go.

I'm thinking of returning it a getting the Samsung 2500 with is around the same price.

How oftem do these firmware updates come out. I'm concerned about buying disks and not being able to play them.

I would like to stay in the $300 price range. I'm hooking it up to a Sharp 52in 120Hz display. I would like best bang for my buck in video quality.

So the average is supposed to search the internet to see if the disk they want to buy is compatable with the player and firmware on their machine.

It's kind of hard to returned opened disks. This could get expensive. Why so many firmware updates? When I first went to DVD I never had a problem with my player with any DVD and still don't so why is Blu-ray so needy?

Any sugestions? Thanks
