Thanks for the responses guys. So for what reason would anyone pay $100 at Bestbuy for a 6 foot THX HDMI cable?

Also, would you all agree that the Blu-ray player I just purchased, is indeed a great one, especially for the money?

I just received the 2.1 FW disc from Panasonic and upgraded to from FW v1.5. Glad they are always providing new firmware releases but sheesh its hard to keep up. I mainly upgraded to get the faster load times. Any improvements going from 2.1 to 2.2?
2.2 is supposed to fix the "freeze" issue with BD60/80;
if yours have the freeze problem, go ahead and go to 2.2
Mine never had the issue so I am still on 1.5.

Did you notice faster load times with 2.1?

Yes, you should get the 2.2 because it is supposed to fix the random freezes . Even if you never experienced "the freeze" I think it's a good idea to get the 2.2

I've only experienced one freeze since I've got my BD80 in July (Chris Botti in Boston). Good to know Panasonic found a fix for the freeze. Has this been confirmed?

According to the 2.1 firmware description it suppose to improve load times by 5-6 seconds. I did notice a slight improvement in load times with 2.1. Not much but noticeable..probably shaves off a few seconds.
2.2 just came out like a week ago - it hasn't been long enough to really confirm; however, afaik, none of the people who had the freeze and got 2.2 has reported any freezes after getting 2.2 so far...so that's a (+) sign.

because the issue is a random issue, it's difficult to judge how long the freeze-less time period (or how big the #of BR discs without freezing) should be...

The only reason would be that they are uninformed and mislead by sales representatives and predatory manufacturers. Monster Cable in particular is infamous for not only charging outrageous prices, but trying to sue anyone who uses the word "monster" in any fashion.
Blue Jeans and Monoprice - they have great high quality cables for affordable prices with no frills.
Audioquest makes a pretty solid cable too, but a bit pricier than the 2 mentioned above.

for power cables, I use Iron Lung Jellyfish - great hospital grade power cable, but very affordable.

Also, I am concerned about load times on the Panasonic, it seems to be a slow loader of the bunch of 2009 BR models especially when compared to LG and Samsung. Have they improved load times lately with the new firmware?

Thanks in advance.

I'm running a BD80 and it is great. PQ is great (for SD+HD) but my audio system is hardly capable of testing the performance of the SQ. I'll leave that up to the other guys.

I'm using firmware 2.2 now and the load times are suddenly extremely fast. I counted 10-15 seconds load time for Star Trek (2009), Hancock and one other title which eludes me. Maybe other titles will be slower; I have only tried a few BR discs so others may have had different results. I do have the quick load feature enabled. It used to speed loading up about 5 seconds previously, at the cost of a few extra watts when the player is "off." The player used to load BR discs in about 40 seconds so the change has been hugely noticeable for me. I will be going through some old discs to see if they now load faster.

I just wanted to send my thanks (for the replies) to "TheFactor" and "dcgilbert" for answering my question on the "colorful" and "Black&White" boxes that the BD60 comes in.

I wound up with the black & white box. The colorful ones in the store were beat up, so I took the box that was in pristine shape.

I'll include an upgrade disk with it when I give it for Christmas.

Hi, can someone help clarify a model# difference on a panasonic dvd player? I am comparing this to a PS3 (mostly for playing blu-rays), and in my search I have come across panasonic model#s dmp-bd80k + another model# dmp-bd80 (no K on the end). The question is, does the model# with no "K", a model that supposedly has "No Regions"? Which I understand means it can play a host of more available copies of dvd's. Is this a true statement? Thanks for your help in advance.

Not really sure, but in many cases, a 'k' on the end denoted the BLACK version of a player as opposed to the silver or 'S' version.

Yes, I've tried it. In two words, it sucks.

I can't get any video to play more than 2 minutes without rebuffering problems. This is not a bandwidth issue; Amazon VOD works perfectly on my laptop and my desktop. I'm convinced the problem is with the BD60. Before the 2.0 firmware update, streamed video played fine on the BD60. I think one of the firmware updates broke Amazon VOD. No one else seems to be seeing these issues though so maybe I'm just stuck at the wrong end of the bell curve.

Regardless, I've always viewed Amazon VOD as gravy. I hook up my laptop via HDMI if I want to stream video from the web. I bought the BD60 because it is an outstanding Blu-ray player at a great price point.

I am using Amazon VOD only because I got 130 bucks credit from Amazon.com and need to use it until June 2010. Here are my findings so far:

-Using my P65V10 Tv , I can't get a stable connection. It goes from blue (HD) to a single bar many times during a 2 hours movie. I thought the 65V10 had some sort of firmware problem , until I got my:

-BD60 player. It's much less unstable than the TV, hooked on the same ethernet switch. Connection goes from 3 bars to blue HD but it IS NOT stable and changes several times during a movie watching. Is the Viera Cast firmware the same on the 65V10 and BD60 ?

-My highspeed connection is the fastest U-Verse available here, 18 mbps. I measure it every day and the lowest I have seen is 14 mbps. Many people report successful HD streaming with 6 mbps, therefore my connection should not be a problem.

I have never seen the audio 5.1, is the Viera cast limited to stereo only ?

Is there anybody here using Amazon VOD in full HD and 5.1 ?

I got my BD60 today, manufactured in October and updated with firmware 2.2. Are you saying you get a stable , blue bars connection with Amazon VOD ? Don't you have interruptions to change the speed during a movie ? I have my TV and the player hardwired to my router and never get a stable connection using the Viera Cast on the TV or on the player (the TV is much worse). I can stream HD movies at a much higher bitrate (25 mbps) from my PC to a PS3 hooked on the very same ethernet switch. My DSL is at 18 mbps , sometimes goes lower but never below 14 mbps (the ATT server is on the ground floor of my building !).

Do you get 5.1 with the BD60 and Amazon ?

YW and the only reason I could see buying them at BB is if you had a 100 dollars burning a hole in your pocket and or you wanted to buy just for the name and pretty colors and yes in my op I think you have a great player with the best bang for the buck.

Odd.

Not only are the reviews here really good, but all the pro reviews are excellent too.

Glad to hear that. I am awaiting the BD60 to be shipped. I can't wait!

Best bang for the buck, I think. Was so even before Panny addressed the freeze issue, but now that they have, imho, it's a slam dunk.
Ok, straight question: Is the BD60 able to output 5.1 with Amazon VOD ? Thanks.

I don't think Amazon VOD offers 5.1 audio, just Dolby Stereo. I'd love to be wrong but I've used it since it started as Unbox with my Tivo S3 and never had multichannel audio, even on HD titles.

Edit: I found the FAQ at the Amazon site and they do offer 5.1 audio but I guess it wasn't on the titles I viewed, Battlestar Galactica and Hero's. Need to find out how to ID VOD titles that have 5.1 audio.

It's only best bang for the buck in the US. It's expensive by comparison in other countries I had noticed.

Really? Didn't know that.

Over here in the U.K. it's around £152 at best, which equates to about 250 dollars!

Is there a way to hook at BD60 wirelessly to the net? I dont have a network cable ran into where I am wanting to put the player. I am hooking it to a Panasonic 37" plasma, which is the biggest reason Im looking at the BD60. I looked back 5 pages and didnt see the answer, Im sure its buried in here somewhere, but dont have the time to read the 175pages.

Thanks
