Official Panasonic DMP-BD60/80 Owners Thread - Page 215

My PS3 froze in the middle of a movie, and then stopped reading discs entirely. Getting a BD-60 was considerably cheaper than getting the PS3 repaired, and since I only used it to watch movies, a standalone seemed like the best option for me. I also contacted Panasonic and requested a CD copy of the latest firmware -- I don't want to try accessing it on my own with all the problems that have been reported.

Now what to do with the PS3...

You can setup a key sequence for an activity in the Harmony software. It can then be assigned to any hard or soft key for that activity. I used it to simplify subtitle toggle on/off.

It is unfortunately limited to 5 keystrokes and subtitle toggle requires 6 so I still have to press two keys. My Subtitle sequence is defined as:

BD60 Display
BD60 Directiion right
BD60 Direction down
BD60 Directiion right
BD60 Direction down

These get performed when I press the soft key assigned to the Subtitle sequence. I then manually press the hard key I have assigned to the Display function to complete the Subtitle toggle.

The only difference was the firmware. The Nov model asked me if I wanted to upgrade and did so. With the Mar unit I had to go to the update screen and tell it to update (via the internet).

After upgrading to Version 2.2, both units are identical and they both work just fine.

Hope you enjoy yours

Thanks for the response! Glad to hear that!

The way to get around the five keystroke limit is to learn IR commands using the Harmony software and pointing both remotes at each other. That way you can combine multi keystrokes and assign them as one. I preassinged multi directional keystrokes to get around menus, such as Downx3 and RightDown. I can then use these keystrokes in any sequence I create. Don't forget to learn these keystrokes as RAW.

Excellent suggestion. I just redid my Subtitle sequence after "teaching" the Harmony software a combination right/down keystroke. Now my sequence is:

BD60 Display
BD60 right/down
BD60 right/down
BD60 Display

Works great - thanks !

You're welcome. I also created a sequence for Dialog Enhancer and Night Surround and grouped them on the same page with Subtitle. Night surround is in a list with the other sound effects so you can't toggle that on and off. To get around this I had to create a Night Surround On and a Night Surround Off sequence.

You shouldn't have any problems updating the firmware if you connect the player to the internet. Most people had problems burning a cd. There is nothing special that you have to do, the whole process pretty much takes care of itself. It is a very, very simple thing to do, not to worry.

I don't have the BD60 but I have the BD30 and after reading the instructions the FW upgrading method is the same as in the BD30. The people having problems with the CD burning are the ones with Vista programmed computers VS the XP who were successful. I don't have HS ISP and I was able to successfully burn the BD60 2.2 FW. I am seriously considering getting the BD60 after reading and learning that the BD60 is the #2 rated BD player. Back to the 2.2 FW have any of you used a CD-RW instead of the CD-R and have successfully installed it? How does the BD30 compare PQ wise VS the BD60?
Thanks

I have had better luck using a CD-R for updating as opposed to CD-RW, ethernet is by far the easiest.

one of these units. it was under warranty and after a long, and i do mean
long, phone calls trying to get to the person authorized to allow me a
repair I took it in 5 weeks ago,(30 miles away).

at first, was told waiting on the part, it wasn't a firmware issue.

after about 15-18 days i got the repair place to tell me that the part was
ordered by no eta date was given by panny. they kind of let me know
that meant panny didn't have the part in stock and possibly could never get it in
stock.

then began about 4 phone calls to panny tracking down the right dept.
to verify that no part was available. this was about 22-25 days after taking it in. i then formally requested panny simply swap mine out for a new one.

I was told this had to go to a separate dept and I would be called back in a couple of days with their response. had to call 5X over past 2 weeks, but finally after about 12/13 days requesting a return phone call, I FINALLY GOT ONE TODAY!

thankfully panny agreed to swap it out. my only caveat is that i get one sent with current firmware updated after the horror stories read over that problem. that seemed to bother him less than his statment he was unsure
if they had any left in stock. I told him I just saw the 605s at costco last
weekend and he said that was stock that had already shipped.

he indicated he may have to offer me another model. great if it is the next gen. is that the bd 65? i don't want to have to pay extra for it either as
i've been out of a br for 5 weeks and it ain't my fault. hope they don't offer me the pre 60 model.

question, any answer yet if panny will upgrade viera on bd 60/80 to stream
netflix? the newest model does do that, correct?

i'm a little discouraged here so from friendly help would be appreciated.

bump.

a little help?

from what i've been able to read, no new model out for gen 60.
anyone know when, where, what for this years model?

what about netflix and the bd60?
is the news so disturbing that no one want to talk about it?

It's been beaten to death here and the news so far is no Netflix on the 60. The new models for 2010 are listed in the 1st post here. They will have Netflix.

I have done two updates on my DMP-BD60, the first was by CD-RW and the second was CD-R. I believe CD-R's are recommended but I had no problem with the CD-RW. The important thing seems to be which software you use to burn the update. I have always had good luck with www.ntfs.com/iso_burner_free.htm.

Does anyone know if you hook up the hdmi cable to the BD-60, will all the audio will also come through that cable? I am out of optical inputs on my pioneer audio system and flat screen. Will I lose any audio quality?

Some receivers only support HDMI pass through. These will not accept and decode the audio signal from the HDMI cable. My Onkyo TX-SR506 is an example of such a receiver. It requires a SPDIF (optical or coaxial) connection to get digital audio.

Check the specs on your Pioneer carefully. It needs to support HDMI audio.

It depends on whether or not your receiver supports HDMI audio.

In fact, if you use SPDIF connection, you're lossing audio quality. HDMI audio is the only way to get full digital audio quality of the BD lossless audio.

I use Sonic Record Now Version 7 along with Windows SP#3. Which Windows program does your computer have? You are correct Panasonic very emphatically recommends CD-R's.
Thanks

If my HDMI connection is to my Sharp Aquos from the Panny and then optical audio out out of the aquos to the pioneer reciever...is this an ok setup?

Probably not. Most TV sets only send DD 5.1 out of their optical connection from programming recieved on it's tuner, they don't do Digital passthru. So you would only get stereo out of the TV's optical connection from the BD player. You may want to upgrade your receiver or get a switch like this from monoprice.

Thanks, I will give it a shot. I do have 1 HDMI port on the reciever. If I use that from the BD , and then connect the optical in from the BD...that is what I need to do,correct. I am new at this(if you couldn't guess)
DOn not get the Monoprice 4X1 switch. An extremely good chance it would not work. Get the 5X1 switch.

That will work. I have a Pioneer VSX-917V with two HDMI inputs. I have HDMI and optical going into the receiver and then HDMI from the receiver to the TV. In the Pioneer I have assigned both the HDMI and optical in to DVD/LD.

That switch I linked to also switches and converts HDMI audio to either an optical or coax Toslink out connection. It's not the standard 4x1 switch, they don't offer a 5x1 switch that will handle the audio conversion/switching. I have one on order and it should be here tomorrow or monday. I'll give you an update then if it works or not.

I have one of those. I can heartily recommend it. I'm surprised at the value compared to the other offerings. You've probably already read about how insanely bright the LEDs are. And it's true. I'll be hacking it this weekend to add larger resistor values to tone them down a bit.

P.S. Monoprice's cables are first rate, too.

I cannot get my BD60 to work with my Denon 3808CI via HDMI. If I cable the BD60 directly to the TV, it works perfectly. If I run it thru the Denon, sometimes I get some flashes of the content on the screen, sometimes not, but then the screen goes blank. It feels like an HDMI problem, but I cannot figure it out.

Anyone else having any luck with this combo?

Looks like a bad cable or connection. Did you try other inputs at the receiver?
I have a friend with this combo with no problems at all. Good luck

Mine works fine.

Turn off any Denon video processing and pass straight thru.

If you can program remote control put some time delay between
steps to allow for hand shake.

Try changing remote's step sequences (if possible).

Change HDMI cables.

If none work you may have a 3808 problem.

Turn resolution to 1080p and not auto. Auto seems to screw with things quite a bit. I had the same issue setting up a friends BD60 with his Onkyo 507.
