The eventual error message said to check disc. That same BR will play on my BD30. Called Panasonic Tech support and the first suggestion was to reformat the SD card, which was done with nothing changing. Note, this same BD60 plays other BR's fine. Another call to Panasonic said that I had to send the unit back to Texas which has been done and I am awaiting its return. Unbelievably, contrary to the conventional wisdom about firmware updating, the tech support guy said that if you are not having any problems with the unit, then you shouldn't update the firmware!! So firmware updaters beware.

I have received the "repaired" blu-ray player, along with a new remote, component video cable, 2 batteries, and another power cord, from Panasonic in Texas. I was a bit surprised that Panasonic had sent me a refurbished BD605 to replace the BD60. At least it plays what use to not be playable on my BD60. That is probably as much as I can ask. Aside from the model number the units are the same. For whatever reason, I am guessing that Panasonic tech tried to play Avatar BR and couldn't on my BD60. It could be that my BD-60 was uniquely defective and no one else has this problem. Anyway, I am a bit leery of anymore firmware updates and as long as the unit plays a BR disc, see no pressing reason to do anymore firmware updates. Too bad that Panasonic didn't send me a BD65 as a replacement. So for those seeking tech support, I would suggest just calling. Forget e-mail because I sent one but never received a reply.

I'm happy you have a player that works for you now.
As far as a non-responsive tech support goes, my experience has been just the opposite. I have contacted tech support 4 or 5 times in the last 2 yrs, and on each occasion a return email with case #, was in my in box within 48 hrs.

Have had the BD80 for about 1 year. It just stated freezing and will not continue after it freezes. Have taken discs and they play fine in other BR players.

Have latest software. Is there a fix? Is it worth fixing? Any have same trouble?

Using it with Denon 4308-IC - Than you

If it is under warranty and you have a receipt, then call up Panasonic tech support and send it in to be repaired. Otherwise, get a new player.

The Panasonic DMP-BD80 is 15 months old, Panasonic won't stand by it.

This is the 3rd Panasonic product I've had REAL quality issue with. You would think I would have learned my lesson.

EVERYTHING Panasonic I've owned in DVD/BR had died and it was a short life.

NEVER AGAIN!

This maybe a bit extreme, but I have more than one BR player to spread out usage over time. I have two BR players and it turns out that it was a good thing, especially with the BD60 going down and sent off for repair. My take about Panasonic is a bit different than yours. It is just safer to have most of the associated components as Panasonic because then I don't have to worry about compatibility amongst different manufacturers.

I recently got a new receiver with hdmi and I am now discovering that with the player set to bitstream, secondary audio off, I get lossless audio (which is great), but no audio during the intro, trailers, menu, special features, commentary, etc. If I turn secondary audio on, all that audio comes back but then I don't get trueHD lossless. How do I get both? If I switch to PCM with secondary audio on, will I be getting lossless or will I be getting the legacy downmix during the movie?

Is there any player that can handle this better? I would like to set it to bitstream, and get both lossless during the movie as well as audio during the special features.
Secondary audio has nothing to do with sound on previews, most special features, and most menu audio. It only affects PIP commentaries and menu sound effects. So, something else is wrong if you aren't getting audio from those sources. Only the movie is lossless. The other sources are usually DD 5.1 or PCM.

It you turn SA on, you are limited to lossy with both the bitstream and PCM outputs.
My receiver says dolby digital during previews and special features, but no sound is coming out. If I go back into setup and turn on secondary audio, then it still says dolby digital and I hear the audio.

I don't often listen to commentaries and don't care much about pop up menu sound effects, I just want to get lossless audio along with special features audio.

What else could I have configured wrong?
what is the brand and model of the receiver?

Jacob
^^^ Like Jacob said. Some receivers need to setup each audio format individually in order to get a sound out for that format. It may not be a player issue (although in a few rare occasions I need to power cycle the player in order to get any audio out) but rather learn how to setup your new receiver properly.

It's a Denon AVR-3311.
I'm so confused now. I just sat down to go through the settings again and try to figure out what's wrong, and I had audio! The trailers, menu, special features, all had audio, and the movie had lossless bitstreamed audio. Everything is working right now with no change in settings.... what could that mean?

A loose wire? Check your connections and make sure that they are the way that they are suppose to be.

Bought a BD601K a month or so ago. First jump into Blu. Got around to hooking it up a few nights ago and could not tell if the unit was on. The electronic display was not working and the only way I knew it was on was to hit disk eject and see if the tray came out Sooo I thought ... Hmmmm update the firmware... So I went with 2.4 and updated it blindly. Update worked but display is still dead??? Any thoughts???

BTW the player did a GREAT job with The Simpsons Movie, G-Force and Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo. Played a SD from the 3 Stoogies Collection that I got from Amazon a few weeks ago. Did a fine job there also.. Will see how it handles Avatar tonight...

Just no damn display..

Go into Setup and in the Display section try changing the 'FL Display' to Bright, Dim, and Auto and see if you get any illumination of the front panel. If you are beyond your warranty it's not a big loss since you can get the same info using the on screen display with the Status button on the remote.
Exactly - I dim my display to the dimmest level anyway, I never really get any info from the front panel anyway...as long as OSD works, i see no real need for a FPD.

Initially I was trying to simply play a movie I had downloaded. I put the movie first on a thumb drive and then on a DVD, but no luck. Tried to do some research to figure what to convert to, but what I would did not seem clear.

Now, I need to take some classes on videos. Their formats are .wmv. I am thinking I need to convert to something in order to get any playback that has both audio and video. But what? Or better yet, what is the best for this? There is a variety of software out there for these kinds of conversions, but is there something that is best or more intelligent in how it compiles to ensure that it works. When I was trying what was mentioned in the first paragraph, i burnt of two hours of time. Would rather not do that again. Is it best to put on disc versus just thumb drive? The thumb drives seem easier for me as I have a lot of them in large sizes. Plus I have been successful in retrieving music (mp3's) from a SD card so I figure going with the thumb drive has to be that simple.

Lastly, I could or was figuring on how to stream these learning videos from my laptop over wi-fi but I didn't get very far. Was trying the whole Media Center thing, but it still has some things to work out. Just put that to the back burner till I finish my new server build, then I can figure where I am going wrong with that and all. But if there is a way to do this easier via my laptop over LAN to my TV or something, that would be great. Otherwise, I will need to sort to the burning to disc, copying to thumb drives, etc..

Hey, thanks for taking the time on my long read. So if you could please tell me what is my best line of sight here to quickly get a few of these done, that would be great. Maybe a step by step type thing. I would really appreciate it!

Sorry to be late in the conversation here.. but I always appreciate the thoughts and ideas that people write here and use this forum to find many problems solved with my home theater setup..

So.. what was today's issue.. My panasonic bd60 player .. usually very reliable , was having problems playing some discs (two Universal movies I had rented from Netflix..) the first one I just sent back and assumed it was just a bad disc.. the second one happened tonite and it was starting to get annoying.. so I did the usual.. looked up the issue here.. and noticed that 2.4 software was available for download.. I then checked my system ( I had done this download before but didn't check the version) and you guessed it.. still at my original 1.1 version..

My wife had googled this issue already and asked me if this would be the problem.. of course I stuck my big chin out there and said.. No..I had already taken care of that before.. hahahaha..

SO after downloading and watching the update happen this time and...big point.. verifying the version before reloading the disc.. I now had a working bluray player again.. all is well here and thanks for the great forum and helpful questions and answers you find here

Is anyone else unable to purchase or rent videos from Amazon video on demand? I noticed that the first episode of Battlestar Galactica is available in HD for free, and when I tried downloading the episode, I received a message saying something like, "We're sorry. Due to technical issues, purchasing is currently unavailable on Panasonic devices".

Last week I still had my cheesmo Sony Home Theater wired to the Panny. I had never played an audio cd disc on the BD60 and I put "Workingmans Dead" in and thought it sounded pretty good. The Panny was wired via an Toslink cable to the Sony.
Well I got a Marantz nr1501 on Wednesday and hooked up the Panny via an HDMI cable and BD's play fine and sound great but when I put in a audio cd again no sound.
Do I need to hook up analog cables from it to the cd input of the Marantz?

That shouldn't be necessary. How is your Marantz input configured? It should be set to auto detect and process any type of incoming audio - encoded Dolby and DTS, PCM, and analog.

YAY !
...finally connected my BD60 to the relocated Linksys WRT54GL router - worked right away, and looks pretty good...my connection (dsl) is just 3.5 mbps, but Youtube is decent and the German Channel (which we can understand since I and wife speak fluent German hehe) is pretty clear... I hope it stays..
We will upgrade our DSL connection pretty soon, and I think youtube will be even more clear than now...it's kind of fun...REALLY bummer that there's no Netflix...oh well, the many "coming soon" boxes do give me hope for at least some other services, though...

I do like the weather and Pandora - Pandora sound quality is excellent coming through my home audio set up; a LOT better than when I connect the laptop to it.

I like the Viera GUI but it has a tiny lag. Idk if it depends on the speed of the internet connection or not...not a big deal though..the Viera GUI looks a hell of a lot better than the BD60's own menu-GUI, I think...

question:
when listening to Pandora for long periods, have you guys ever worried about the image on the TV being still for a long time? I have a Samsung LCD (1080p) and i know that "burn-in" is not a concern with LCDs but more with plasmas, etc ...but still.

My TV has this "Any Net" feature and if I turn the TV off the Panny BD60 also turns off...on the other hand, i guess one needs the TV display to change channels, thumb songs up/down and skip, etc...
If you want to disable the feature it is Viera Link on the panny.

When I tried it the a screen saver kicked in that would spin the image, and then when a new song started it went back to normal, and a minute later it would kick in again.

I only see options to set one output resolution for all source types, or an Auto setting that will pick the highest resolution a display device can take.

My Optoma HD66 720p projector can take a 1080p input signal, so that is what I get when I select Auto.

I could set the output to 720p to match my projector, but that would mean having the BD605 do the scaling.

I want my projector to do the scaling, so I am having to go into setup to change the output resolution every time I change from DVD to BD.

Is there a way to have my BD605 output the "native resolution" found on the disk over HDMI to my projector?

Thanks - I guess I was too busy trying things out in Viera Cast, I probably didn't listen to a song long enough for the image spin to kick in....will try it again...

Can any of you assist with my issues please? Here is what I wrote initially:

I turned it off in my BD-605 so it would not shut down when the TV was turned off. Don't believe in well over 100W being used to listen to music (usually in another room). I didn't even think about turning off in the TV, but this leaves open for other units to control the TV (which I don't have now). /Dan
