I was messing with my BD80 while my kid was watching a Thomas the Train DVD. I went into the video settings and switched from progressive to 24P just to see what would happen. The screen went black for a few seconds and came back on looking better. I was in doubt so I went into my Picture menu on my Panny Z1 that is capable of 60 or 96 Hz 24P playback and it was not grayed out, telling me it was taking the signal. Can this be happening?
Note that 24p has to be forced on for each DVD. It has been said that Panasonic did this deliberately to avoid service calls from users that do not have a 24p capable set which would result in no signal if 24p were automatic on SD DVD which are (supposedly) encoded at 480/i60 although the DVD format, MPEG2, is perfectly capable of 24 fps.
