Official *Fast Loading* JVC XV-BP1 owner's thread - Page 83

what movies are you guys having issues with? I've recently watched Inception, Last Airbender, Sorcerers Apprentice and Winter Bones on MKV with no issues.

Hope the pixelation issues do not come back
post #2462 of 2547
Some of the newly encoded mkvs are pixalizing, while others play fine. I even sent a sample mkv to JVC and they said they will investigate on their end. Some of the ones that i tried were foreign language films. I know someone with LG BD370 US version and he is not having any issues. Seems like it's just this JVC unit.
That is interesting, because I tried the latest BD370 update on my JVC BP1 and it didn't fix the pixelation problems with the newer MKV files. They have the identical hardware, so I don't see how the BD370 owner is not getting the same pixelating problems that we are with the BP1.
I tried that as well on my JVC (v7173) but still had pixalization. Looks like the BD370 US version may have a different firmware. The firmware that you and i tried was from the LG Japan site. Knowing LG, they release so many firmwares for their units and don't bother putting them all on their website. Most people get the latest firmware via network upgrades. My friend ordered a disc with latest firmware from LG. I'll be getting that in a week or two.
can someone post a sample here and I can test?
I just tried Apocalypse Now and it did not work, but Hearts of Darkness (documentary included on a different disc did work). Then I put in Dr. Zhivago which had worked before but now gave me a disc error. I still have to update the firmware but it is puzzling that a blu-ray would work before and not now.
I'm a JVC man myself, but they don't seem to manufacture Blu-Ray players (but only Pro recorders) or TVs anymore. And what is up with this BP-1 lately? Seems like there's been a lot of problems playing the newer Bu-rays. I would hate to be stuck with this kind of trouble, glad I returned mine a year ago and 'almost' bought the Oppo BD-83 but somehow that didn't happen either. Looks like the opportunity calls for the new BD-93 when it hits.
I understand where you are coming from. My player is having problems reading standard DVD discs. I have to open and close the tray until it reads it. This can take 20-30 times. With BD it loads with no problem. Oppo player in the future. When is the release date for new Oppo player ?CES?
Toy Story 3 won't play; the play arrow appears briefly but then it goes to the BP1 menu screen.

That's on two different discs from Netflix.

My player's is 1 1/2 years old and I've never done a f/w update.

How risky is it?

Maybe it's time for a new player anyway; is there anything significantly faster out now?

Fast loading is nice but more important to me is overall responsiveness in operation, i.e. how fast does it respond to commands and how fast/smooth are FF and REV.

It would also be nice to recover the feature my previous Panasonic BD30 had of showing subtitles on the lowest FF speed.

Toy Story 3 played fine on my unit. You just have to upgrade to the latest firmware on JVC site. v169. Not risky at all. Copy the ROM file onto a USB drive (root of the USB) and then power up the unit. It takes less than 30seconds.

It worked and TS3 plays, thanks!

Had a bit of a scary moment when the instructions said to open the update file (no can do) and save it, but just dragging it from my desktop into the flashdrive directory worked.

Glad to hear all went well. I have updated twice, both without issue. Very smooth process overall.

I'm still impressed with this player. It just keeps chugging along with out complaint and does a really good job at upconverting DVD's too.

I have been using the JVC XV-BP1 for a little over a year now - great player. I have been using a 640GB external hard drive and everything has been fine, but I recently upgraded to a 2TB and when I use that drive the player freezes and shuts down. The HD works fine on my ps3, mac, and PC. Any solutions or anybody else having problems with this size external hard drive and their XV-BP1?
This title never starts with the flash drive plugged in. The Player Actually Shuts Down Entirely & I Have To Power It Back On. I take the flash drive out and the movie plays with no issue.

I had a couple other issues like TruHD Audio not starting unless I switched to another audio track and back to TruHD.

Not very useful, but hey, they responded.

This is the response today:

Again not very helpful.

Dear _______________,

Thank you for replying. I am Jose, your email care specialist.

Unfortunately, we currently do not have any other firmware updates available for the model XV-BP1. If you've already updated your Blu-Ray player's firmware yet the problem remains, then it's best to verify if your Blu-Ray discs have any hairline scratches on the non-labeled side of the disc.

Note that all Blu-Ray discs will have a greater chance of become unreadable whenever there's even a slight harline scratch on the surface of the disc. This is due to the fact that these new discs will have pits recorded on the recording surface that's a micro-fraction of how the pits were recorded on CD and DVD discs. These older disc technologies rarely encountered these playback issues due to the larger size pits recorded on the recording material. To learn more about how these disc technologies work, you can refer to the following link:
http://www.howstuffworks.com/blu-ray2.htm

This will require either cleaning the discs using a Blu-Ray Disc Cleaner or purchasing a DVD Lens Cleaner through any local electronic stores. Some of these items can even be purchased through any online stores.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know at customerrelations@jvc.com or by phone at 1-800-252-5722 between the hours of Monday through Friday 8AM to 8PM CST, Saturday 8AM to 5PM CST or Sunday 9AM to 4:30PM CST.

Sincerely,
JoseJ

Same here, unit shuts down after trying to load disc! Did not try to unplug U drive through.

LG 370 firmware fixed the problem though. Now it plays "Sound of Music" OK.

Is this the same Fw a few posts back? I think mine must be faulty now as Disc 1 in the BBC Life series no longer loads.
My Player is still going very strong. No issues playing DVDs or Blu Rays. The only movie that took longer than normal to load was The Expendables. I'm running the lastest firmware version.

Picture and audio are top notch.

Yes. I got the info from this thread a while ago
post #2480 of 2547
I have the latest firmware, I get "disc error" and the disc ejects with 2 movies that used to work fine, none of the 5 discs for Bladerunner, nor Reservoir Dogs.
On Apocalypse Now only Disc 1 will work, but the bonus discs I also get "disc error."
I've tried everything, updated it via the LG firmware, used a USB stick in when it starts to no success.

I have the same problem w/sd DVDs. A quick search of the net said either spindle motor or laser head needs cleaning.

However I can play blu rays.weird? I believe we got the occasional JVC JUNK.
Actually since this model is made by LG for JVC, we should blame LG.
What happened? JVC completely abandoned home theater and televisions? The best DVD player I've owned (to this day) is my JVC XV-SA600. I wanted to get a Blu-Ray player as an upgrade, sticking with JVC and bought BP-1 but I had it returned after a day. I didn't like the bright blue light and the display is lacking playback info. It also took very long for the tray to open and close. The XV-SA600 is still in full force as we speak, and never a hiccup.
Your BP-1 must have been defective. My BP-1 has a very fast tray--from standby to open is less than 2 seconds, and the same for closing. Don't forget that the very first Blu-ray and HD-DVD players would take a full minute or longer to load a movie up--my Toshiba HD-DVD XA2 takes 34 seconds just for the tray to open.
Is there a way to keep the player from timing out when put on pause, or setting it to a longer time?

I looked through the menus and didn't see anything.
Does anyone know where I can find a list of compatible external hard drives for the JVC XV-BP1? Or if there is a limit to the capacity you can hook up to the JVC XV-BP1? I would rather not sell my blu-ray player, but I do need it to be compatible with a larger hard drive (right now my 1TB just causes it to freeze).
well, finally saw the pixelation issue that is the same as the problem last year. Movie is Hereafter

What file system you have on this HD - fat or ntfs?
In JVC manual any word about using HD. DO you connect HD to JVC by USB?

Yes, format your HD to fat32 and plug it in using USB cable. Remember, to make your files less than 4gb

I think the drive maybe going out any ideas where I can get a blu-ray drive for the BP1, other than that it has been working flawlessly.
