I couldn't get "Beauty and the Beast", "Frozen" or "Valkyrie" to play on the JVC.

Their support said they would check with a specialist regarding the firmware update. Basically, don't call us, we will call you response. I'm afraid it's a lost cause now. Too bad, I really liked this player.

Not that I don't trust you, but where did you get this info or suggestion. I know that there has been discussion on the commonality of the players, but I just don't want to install an update and brick my player. I really like my player and it does a great job so I would like to keep it around for awhile. I am having some playback issues as well and if this is a legit fix that would be great.

This should be a legit fix. I downloaded the firmware from LG Japan site for BD370 before which is same as XV-BP1 and it worked fine. You just have to rename file. I'll test it on my player tonight and let you know.

You just rename the file to whatever you feel like?

Rename to JVC_BD_310M.ROM. Place it on the root of USB drive, boot up the player and it will automatically recognize the firmware upgrade. It'll show you the current version of firmware which is already on the BD and the new one and ask you for confirmation. If the firmware is not the right one for this BD, you'll never see that screen. Player just skips it. So you can't just rename any file to JVC_BD_310M.ROM and expect the player to update the firmware. I'm still at work, i'll test it tonight and let you know how it goes.

Thanks for posting a more thorough description of the process, and please do post a follow up after you try it, as I'm very interested in updating my player if the process works for you.

The process worked fine but after updating to the latest firmware, i'm having MKV playback issues. Some of the mkv files that played fine before, don't play anymore. The player either freezes or the file is heavily pixelated. AVI files play fine. MKV playback is really important to me so I'm going to revert back to the latest version from JVC site until next firmware release from LG.

So it does allow you to revert back to an older firmware?

Yes it does. You just delete the newer file from the USB drive and replace it with the one from JVC site. Power off/on the player and it'll show the version that's currently on and ask you if you want to update it to the older version. I've done that few times in the past. Just remember not to touch the USB drive or power off the player during the update.

I appreciate it. I was just leery of bricking my player. I love my JVC and MKV file playback is not an issue for me so I'll try the update and see how it works for me and report back to let you all know what I find out.

I just went to the LG site and there are a couple of update options. Which fw did you use and did you have to follow the special update instructions or just use the newest fw version issued in September.

I always go to the LG Japan site to download. Here is the link. click on the second tab. Download the one from top section titled: LG_BD_370JM.zip. You can probably download the same file from LG USA site.

Well I downloaded the update and it did not fix the issues I was having. If anything it was slightly worse. I went ahead and reverted back to the old fw. I will keep my eye open for new fw versions and see if that would work.

Would there be any need to do a sequential fw update where something is missed? Or does the latest fw have all the previous fixes and the new updates as well?

What issues were you having? Are there specific blu-ray titles that will not play?

Personally, mine won't play Beauty and the Beast (I have the US and the UK version, and it won't play either), Frozen, or Operation Valkyrie. And I think there's one or two that I'm forgetting.

I do not have any of those titles. Where I noticed issues was with the Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Pt 2. It plays, but there are half second freezes and studders/shudders. This is the only film I have noticed this on. My wife did not even notice, but I pay attention to that stuff. It almost reminds me of a DVD layer change in the way it happens.

I have a PS3 and I tried the movie on that and it plays flawlessly.

It is a great player, I just wish JVC would keep supporting it, or the BR standards would stop changing.

I had the same problems with the latest Harry Potter movie it's the first BR that my BP1 has had a problem with. It's a shame that JVC abandoned this fine player it does such a good job especially with up converting. I picked up a newer Panasonic player to ensure BR playback but with up converting it lags behind the JVC.

Problem: loud noises coming from BR drive when powering up and when the tray opens and closes.

Solution: I took the cover off the BR drive and applied a small amount of liquid graphite to the lens rails and tray wheels, problem solved. I used a Q tip to apply the graphite to make sure none dripped down on the circuit board.

Even though I've picked up another BR player for BR disc support my BP1 is still in service for DVD playback because of its superior PQ

I have this player and have it for several years. I just recently had trouble playing BR discs and then a regular dvd. I read the idea of flashing with the LG firmware so I have done that and trying to get the BR dvds back to try them again. Will post what happens. Thanks for posting this information.

I have three discs which won't play on the JVC and sadly they still don't work after the update. Hopefully somebody else will have more luck!

Awesome. This firmware fixed the problem with some of the MKV files that were pixalizing before. Haven't tried many but the few that were pixalizing before are now fixed. Even though this firmware has the same date as the one from LG site that i tried few months ago, at that time, these files were still pixalizing. This one appears to work better.

I thought it was worth posting here since there is a new firmware update for this model as others here noted. I received one of these back from a customer that I sold it to when this model first came out. This has been a rock solid player for several years, and ahead of the competition in it's price range at the time, so it was always one of my favorites. My customer started to have issues where it would play BD but not DVD. Now it doesn't recognize any disc, just says NO DISC on the display after READING. Have tried audio CDs, DVDs, and BDs with the same results. I recommended a cleaning disc before they turned it over to me, but at this point it won't even read the cleaning disc I have to play the tracks that would brush the lens. So I checked the JVC support site and was quite surprised to find an update released this year. I loaded it fine, but it did not affect the playback issue at all, as it's almost definitely a hardware failure. Since I sold several of these and still consider this player to be better quality than *most* of the economy priced (under $200) players made today, and don't care a thing about streaming Netflix or other networking or internet features, and just want to play discs, I feel it's worth repairing, and found a used drive pulled from a BD370 for $25 on eBay. I'll post a follow up after I get the drive in, but was wondering if anyone else has had a drive failure on this model or the BD370/390. Hoping it's not the electronics. Solid caps on the computer board and quality construction, I think I can get a couple more years out of this player.

Unrelated; I'm reading about people using the LG player updates for this player, and see there is a July 2012 update listed for the BD370. Does anyone know if the LG updates enable any network playback of Youtube or Netflix? The update from LG's site, which others have said will work with the XV-BP1, appears to be over 3 times the file size, I'm just wondering if it pretty much rebrands the UI as an LG and gives the same features as the LG models, or if there are chip or software differences or limitations when loaded on this unit.

Hmm, I just unzipped the file from LG and the BD370 ROM file is actually less than double the size of the JVC file. The LG update zip file contains two ~42MB files, one without an extension, the other is the .ROM that I'm thinking about updating the JVC with to check for Netflix. Since the JVC file was about 27MB, that's a plenty big file size difference to include a lot more software or streaming options that aren't present on this unit out of the box.

I bought one of these from best buy website just after it came out and they sold like crazy. I couldn't find one anywhere. The one I received was dead on arrival and read "no disc". It wouldn't read anything and it was brand new. Evidently there is a drive issue with this machine.

I had sold several of these and believe them to be a solid player, and very reliable. I hadn't heard any of the drive issues, but I haven't followed this thread since the model was pretty new, and haven't read back very far. The particular player I am repairing was with a family with 4 kids and 4 dogs, it got banged and fell off a shelf a lot, and I'm surprised it's worked the 2 1/2 - 3 years it has. All the other units I sold have had 0 issues with playback or stability, but they are mostly single user or older couples using them. I have helped the owners with firmware updates and things like that on occasion, and would rate these several times better than most Samsung, Panasonic, or the like. Especially better than the ~ $79 players of today. I'd rather have a 3 year old model like this than a new one with Youtube and Netflix. That's why I feel this one is worth repairing.

I'm not arguing with you about the drive issue, because it's obvious the one I have has a failed drive. The drive is nearly unmarked, very generic looking, with a SATA connector and a proprietary power connector. The replacement (which I just got in today) is one number higher in model, so it's entirely possible that both this model and the related LG's that share the same drive(s) received an improvement at some point. I'm just hoping it's 100% compatible. I'll post again tonight after I install it.
