Well, it wouldn't bother me if it were only visible on that site, but the (color) banding is present EVERYWHERE (desktop, games, movies). And on all color gradients! It's obviously the PC and not the display.

Any fix for this problem? Drivers or somthing?

Jeez, I feel I'm back in '99 with 16-bit. It's driving me insane!
I read the 185.85's aren't that great, I've considered downgrading to the 182's because in Team Fortress 2 I'm getting random and severe graphics card crashes I never got before, crashes similar to the videocard overheating but I know the videocard isn't.

I'm going to look at the lh30 right now in person at the store, might bring it home if I like it. If the backlight bleeding is better than my Westy I'll probably buy it, since I'm already used to it from my Westy, anything is an upgrade.

edit - Also for the driver issue, I'd recommend going to Guru3d and checking the forums, also you could do a fresh driver install and use Driversweeper on Guru3d to clean out the old drivers.
Yeah, the driver would be my 1st guess too. But it's still a guess, know what I mean? So many variables: nvidia driver, win 7, 64bit, vga/dvi-hdmi cables, new display/crt.

Looking at my friend's PC, though, the same problem is apparent on win xp with a 7600gt. And not a lot of complain about it. ?!?!

I'm going to lurk some more on Guru3d but if anyone knows how to fix this please let me know.

HD shows from Directv looks fantastic.

I didn't like the CNET settings that they posted. The picture was very dark. I found settings on an Amazon review of this TV (that I posted in this thread) that make the PQ look fantastic.

Here is the CNET settings: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-19410_10...&tag=mncol;txt

I'm not seeing any banding on my desktop or in movies.

Also, there is very little backlight bleeding on this set. I have a Sony 40XBR2 which has a lot of backlight bleeding.

This is a great TV. Make sure you get a panel that has an April 2009 manufacture date.

I just downgraded to the 182.50's, there a LOT of posts on the Guru3d 185.50's and I just played TF2 and crashed again, I'm officially fed up, I'll let you know if it fixes the problem for me.

I'm going to look at the TV tomorrow, how can you verify that? Is there something in the barcode?
There is a sticker on the back of the TV that shows the manufacture date. There is no sticker or bar code on the box that shows the date.

Try to get a box with a plastic handle instead of a box that is sealed with tape. The boxes with handles are the newer TV's.

Why not contact customer service for your concern?
The problem is in the PC.
Which customer service? Intel, MSI, XFX, nVidia, Microsoft ??

I know it seems I'm going off-topic with this but I'm trying to get the best possible PQ on the lh30 and this color banding makes it impossible.
I would assume MSI or XFX is your videocard maker, call them first. I downgraded to the 182.50's and it seems to have fixed my problems.

Also, guru3d is the place for questions like that, definitely take some screenshots and post them over there, they will definitely help you.

Superastic,

You got me searching for more flaws on this screen.

If by banding you mean this? Like that picture, I do see *slight* banding if i make my screen one solid bright color (when would that ever occur though). But on that gametrailer page you linked me, I saw nothing out of the ordinary.

I do however see some Moire pattern in my favorite game Oblivion on my PC. Again seems to be isolated to extreme bright HDR textures in-game like looking at a castle wall with the game's exaggerated HDR sun light hitting it. Bothers me a little but it's the only game so far that I've noticed it.

As far as variable lag, some games I notice seem to lag more than others. Make sure to *not* have mouse smoothing on or triple buffering. Also make sure your game resolution is running the native res of the LCD 1920x1080. I wouldn't be surprised if this panel doesn't resolution scale quickly. I'm still wondering though if there's any difference between the European version and ours.

Also on a side note, I did get a chance to stop by Magnolia and check out a Panny's new 32-37" G1. Looks like they're still using an IPS-Alpha but sure enough, i played with the menu system and they don't allow individual color tweaking! And yup it has that trademark oversaturation of red in the picture. I'm glad I didn't wait for Panny. Price was surprisingly competitive though, even for Magnolia.

Despite its flaws (all manufactures/models have em, ooooh trust me, lol!), I still think at $780 bucks, this 42lh30 is a steal! Still Extremely satisified. It feels nice to finally just play my games than purchase and return hardware all the time. Just finished Crysis and Crysis Warhead. This thing is so damn immersive, I find myself dreaming bout the damn game in my sleep.

Hey KVW, do I spot a red stuck pixel in the lower center-left part of the screen or is it just a photo artifact?

I also have 1 RED stuck pixel and 1 GREEN one. I tried to run "Jscreenfix" to fix them but I guess this application doesn't like Windows 7 cause it won't start at all.

Anyway, games look like this (screeshots posted by someone else):
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...picture004.png
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...r/badsmoke.jpg

Notice the heavy banding in the sky (Age of Conan) and all throughout the one from Bioshock.

This is what I'm talking about!

Min had a box sealed with tape, but a manufacture date of May 2009. Bought at Best Buy in Canada.

I see what your talking about now. That's different than the issues I posted pics of. BTW, those pics are not of my display, they were just examples I found on google to describe some of the stuff I see with my LH30. So no dead pixels. Infact on the 2 other LH30s as well as an LH40 I had my hands on, there was never a dead pixel! so that's 4 for 4 that haven't had any dead/stuck pixels. That's some bad luck right there... I would exchange or return it just for that reason alone! Jscreenfix never works - look at the comments that usually follow threads about dead/stuck pixel and all of them say that jscreenfix didn't fix it. I don't think I've ever seen someone say that it has fixed theirs. Pretty bad odds I'd say.

Anyways back to your issue with the color blending. That's suppose to be the difference between a 6bit and 8 bit panel I think. I'll have to check mine for something like that. I don't recall seeing this but now that I know what to look for...

This is where people's personal preference comes into play, honestly those pics of conan don't bother me at all, they obviously aren't ideal, but I think I get that type of banding on my Westy, and it doesn't bother me that much, I usually see that in Fallout 3 in the sky at dusk. It seems to me every game differs with that type of banding, I see it most in Fallout, I'll have to check TF2.
Ok guys, so I went ahead and bought the 32LH30 at Best Buy, right great deal at $599, not bad.

I immediately hooked up my PC to the VGA port as primary display.

I have one [somewhat major] problem though, which is I can't set the resolution above 1280x1024.

At first I thought maybe cuz my video card is a Geforce4 Ti 4200, but then I did some research and found that this card supports 1920x1080/60hz.

Still, I can't seem to get this screen to display 1920x1080, KVW did you have this problem?

Can changing/updating drivers fix this?

------------

Another thing, In PC input I can only set 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios, I can't use 'Just Scan' or 'Set By Program' or 'Cinema Zoom' etc.

I have been on this for a good solid day.

The picture quality is great, I don't want to return this set if I can fix this resolution problem
post #138 of 1146
KVW should have put a disclaimer LOL. Running your monitor @ 1920x1080 takes a powerful videocard, i've been running my Westy with a 8800GTS from the start, and upgraded to a 260GTX, running a 37"-42" monitor takes a hefty videocard, from a desktop perspective and especially a gaming perspective!
Yeah, unfortunately, in Europe (for LG at least) there's a 5 dead pixels or more exchange policy.

Anyway, please try to see if you have this banding problem on your lh30 and if drivers make a difference.

As I posted before, I am using win 7 64bit with 185.85 WHQL(for win 7 64bit).

On one site here, at least, the lh3000 is advertised as having a 10bit panel so I'm really curious (also, annoyed as hell) as to why PQ is so bad.

I haven't been able to continue testing the display these last couple of days (busy) but tonight hopefully I'll have time.
Problem is, I can't even get the 32LH30 to even accept the 1920x1080 resolution, I adjust the settings, hit apply, and nothing changes, but the "Would you like to keep these settings?" Message always comes up as if something changed.

And another thing, do any of you guys have your PC connected through the VGA port? And if so, are you able to select all of the aspect ratios? [i.e. more than just 16:9 and 4:3] because I can't, and I know that I'm supposed to be able to.

I called LG Customer Service and the rep had no clue how to fix this, he just said, "It should work automatically...."

I'm going to give Nvidia a call tomorrow to see what the deal is here, I'll post up my findings.

---

As for banding problems, I have experienced none, I think I got one of the best sets (knocks on wood)

FYI: There is no input lag when playing Street Fighter 4 on PS3 Through HDMI 1.3.

Have you found a way to turn Real Cinema off? Also, do you not find setting the sharpness to 50 to be tad blurry compared to most other displays?

Thanks.

My Mac Mini with GMA graphics drives the 37" via DVI-VGA just fine. Now, I'm not using it for gaming, but it plays 1080p video just fine, thus far. And looks amazing.
So I ended up calling nVidia, and they suggested just updating the drivers, sure enough I had super old drivers.

Since I have a GeForce4 ti 4200 the latest drivers are the 93.71 which worked wonderfully. I can now set it to 1920x1080 @ 60hz.

For anyone having trouble with resolutions, just update drivers. The 32LH30 is a great display!
Hey guys, new to this thread and just had a quick question. Has anyone who owns this tv experienced any of the banding issues that cnet claims exist? I ask because i'm thinking of purchasing this set and was wondering if this was widespread or just Katzmaier getting a bad test set. Thanks in advance
post #145 of 1146
Hey, ax gates, where on cnet does it say exactly that lh30 has banding issues?

Could you please provide a link or something?

This is exactly what I'm experiencing right now.
Uniformity: The LH30 did not excel in this category. The sides of the image appeared darker and very slightly green-tinged compared with the middle, and we could see some variations in brightness, especially a pair of subtly brighter vertical bars in the middle of the screen. These issues appeared in flat fields mostly, such as the blue sky above Golgatha, the white overcast seen from Jesus' point of view as he slumped from the cross and the light sandy street where he lay afterward. When seen from off-angle the LG lost fidelity more quickly than did the Samsung, becoming more washed out and slightly discolored in dark areas and darker in bright areas.

That's just an excerpt from the written review. He mentions some bright vertical bars. I think he also mentioned it towards the end of his video review
post #147 of 1146
Hmm, what I'm experiencing is a bit more serious, I feel. The paragraph above does not describe my problem (banding), but merely a lack of panel uniformity.

I'm not seeing any vertical or horizontal bars. The image problem appears as in the 2 screenshots I gave the link to a couple of posts earlier in the thread.

To an experienced display reviewer, I can't imagine how what I'm seeing would be acceptable on any display (entry-level or otherwise).
Have you contacted LG on the issue to see what they think it might be?
Not yet. I'm fiddling with drivers right now. I want to be certain that the problem is the display and not the PC.
Oh I see, well I hope its not a tv issue but at the same time I know that sucks since pc issues are much harder to nail down. Anyway keep us posted on your findings
