Sony HDR-XR500V vs. Sony HDR-XR200

Trying to figure out which to purchase. The 500 is $300 more in price.

The comparison on the Sony site shows differences of (200 listed first, 500 second):

Still Picture Resolution: 4 vs 12 megapixels
Optical zoom: 15x vs 12x
Lens: Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® vs G Lens
Minimum Illumination: 5 lux vs STD 11 lux, LOW LUX 3 lux
Touch panel size: 2.7" vs 3.2"
Dual Record: 2.3 vs 8.3 megapixel

Otherwise everything else is pretty much the same. As a "first time" camcorder buyer, who won't be using this camcorder in place of a digital camera, the main benefits of the 500 appear to be the lens and the Low Lux modes. Am I correct?

Would a 200 suffice for most day-to-day filming of typical scenes? I likely won't do too much shooting at night.

I want a basic camcorder that will do HD, has a HDD, and will last me 7-10 years. I am hoping to buy the 200 unless anyone believes that the features on the 500 make it more preferable and useful for my needs. Thanks!

I think you missed the biggest difference - 500 has a 1/2.88""Exmor R" CMOS sensor while the 200 has a 1/5" Exmor™ CMOS sensor. This will probably make a big difference in overall video quality and low light shooting.

Ah, you are right - forgot the sensor.

So what is your advice for someone entering the game right now. Spring for the $300 more and enjoy the features/advantages (500), or save the money and enjoy a great camcorder (200) that can do an awful lot?

I am also trying to decide between XR200V vs. XR500V.
