Firmware upgrades confirmed: Sony says three great new features are on the way

As a reply to a forum member at the official Playstation blog, a Sony rep named CydoniaX confirmed at least three great new features will be added in a future firmware release:

When are we getting game launching abilities for every multiplayer game in the PS3 library? Why is it that the most basic of features for both the XMB and HOME get prioritized and delivered before all the extra stuff?

1) XMB - Voice Chat across games
2) XMB - Voice messaging (30 sec clip)
3) HOME - Game Launching for all games

Deliver what the fans want first and foremost then surprise us with all this Xi stuff.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
CydoniaX replied on March 23, 2009 at 12:32 pm

All that stuff is still in development, game launching started with Warhawk and should be supported by all future game spaces now. It takes time, but we haven’t forgotten about all the stuff that our users really want!

EDIT UPDATE:

The Sony rep has updated the comments:

Guys, some clarification seems to be needed on my above comment, apologies for being misleading. I was talking about voice chat for Home in general being worked on, not specifically about voice chat across games or voice messaging on the XMB. I can see how my quick answer was taken as a confirmation on all 3 items, but this is not the case.

BTW, rumor has it that firmware 2.70 is dropping any day now. I have no idea if this rumor (if true) and the feature confirmation above are related:

Quote:

Just got this from a prominent PS3 developer at GDC: “PS3 Firmware 2.70 definitely this week. Developers got it yesterday.”

The update was rumoured to have gone live this afternoon, but was apparently withdrawn. This source is concrete, kids. Watch for an announcement in the next few days.

He never specifies it is coming in the next firmware so it could be in 2.80, 2.90, etc.

Cydonia X and Locust_Starr (the two HOME community managers) are not exactly "solid"... they have made promises before only to have things "fall through" and using the excuse that they only provide info that they are provided.

Granted they have a tough job, and are walking targets..

Why isn't this in the 2.7 thread?

news of this kind deserves a special thread

I never specified that either.

When I first posted this I didn't think it was a 2.70 update; just something likely for the future that they are working on. Later on I saw the rumor that I posted in my 2nd entry, but the two may not be related. I guess I could've posted the 2.70 rumor in the other thread.

Because this isn't part of the 2.70 update.

I know, but it could be misleading to some seeing one post announcing new FW features and the next saying 2.70 is coming.

the sony guy updated his reply and now confirms only HOME voicechat as being "on the way", which wasn't even listed in the other guys list. In general it's pretty flimsy evidence to use a reply on a blog as a direct confirmation of anything.

I wish they would patch in the ability to play PS2 games with my Tournament Edition stick... Madcatz can't do **** about it,and have to wait for Sony.

That's actually a stuff up on Madcatz behalf, if they made the stick fully compatible with sixaxis/dualshock 3 it would work.

The official blog has confirmed a ton of things in the past that came about, so it is far more reliable than most news sites. That particular rep obviously spoke out of turn, so thanks for pointing out the update. I edited it in to the first post above.

1) XMB - Voice Chat across games

This is what I've been wanting for a LONG time, and one of the reasons why I like to use the 360 so much.

- Sony has some responsibility in this too. There were all kinds of shenanigans for a few updates when it came to the Virtua Stick High Grade and Hori Real Arcade Pro. It seem like one update would enable PS2 compatibility for one stick only to disable it for the other. The next update would be vice versa.

I wish Sony would stop wasting their time with Home. That said, I don't get the comment in the edit. Are we going to be able to voice chat across games soon? I remember when 2.4 came out Sony said that was one thing they were still working on. It's probably the last big piece of the puzzle that the PS3 OS needs.

I will admitt that it is nice to be in private chat while I'm playing cod4 and my other friend is playing something else...or we could be playing the same game but still in private chat to cut out all the screaming kids

Huh. Its been so long since I turned on my ps3 I still dont have Home yet on my machine. I actually turned it on the other day to watch a bluray and I had an update waiting for me but declined to install it. I assume that has home on it? Actually come to think of it I have a 60 gb 6 launch ps3 and Im pretty sure I have only updated it maybe once, if ever...................

Why is it my computer will run a PS2 emulator relatively well but Sony won't add one to the new PS3 which are much more powerful?

That blog article was all about Xi in Home. The rep must be connected to the Home team, so the comment was maybe about voice chat eventually being possible anywhere people are on Home.

We must have different definitions of well. PCSX2 compat list says only 987 of 2066 games are fully playable.

Even if you may only use it for BR playback you should get the updates as they also offer updates to playback for your movies. I highly recommend it.

Thats 987 more games than the BC-less PS3's will play right now.

Sure, but Sony isn't going to release a software PS2 solution if it works for fewer than half of the PS2 catalog. I bet they have one, it's probably just not "good enough" yet.

Interesting. Ill have to check it out. I tried to turn it on yesterday but it wouldnt. I think it got destroyed in a game of living room hockey. It was sitting on the floor for some reason in front of my stand and me and my brother just left it there since none of us really cared what happened and it took a few puck and stick shots. I lost the little rotating ps3 emblem. That was the coolest feature!

So you broke a $400+ piece of electronics equipment because you were too lazy to move it a few feet?

Who knows. It's not as easy to emulate the GS on PS3 as many may think. There are major bandwidth issues to overcome.

Considering I have my own house I don't think mom and dad care lol. Turns out the power cord was just loose in the back. I'll have to play through resistance again tonight for nostalgia!

Because they choose to sue the best emulator developers in the world instead of hiring them.

I think he was calling you childish/irresponsible/frivolous for choosing to break your ps3 instead of moving a few feet while playing indoor hockey.

You can play thru RFOM in a night? I tried once and couldnt make it even on easy. I remember it being pretty long.
