I primarily watch movies. I am considering building a DIY screen with removable masking.

My default position would be to have the masking in place, to accommodate most films, and un-masking to create a 16:9 ratio for watching HDTV. If I planned to do regular HDTV viewing I would remove the masking to reveal a larger screen size.

My (in transit) projector is a Panasonic PT-AE3000U. From what I have read, the lens memory on this projector permits one to use a 2.38:1 screen and view 16:9 content without the use of masks because of its "lens memory" feature.

I'd like feedback from anyone who has used this feature and thoughts on the preference for a masked setup vs. a default 16:9 screen sized unmasked.
