surround & red white rca jacks?

I purchased a Panasonic SC-H740 HTIB thinking this would be all I needed to listen to 5.1 sound coming over my cable Co. HD feed.

When I went to hook up the sound from my TV to the HTIB the only input on the 740 was the rca jacks.

I guess my question is What comes out on the tv "out" rca jacks when I am receiving a HD program with 5.1 sound.

Should the HT740 use this feed to give me surround sound.

Thanks for any and all help Jim L.

no... that wont give you 5.1 sound. I will assume that you have the 760 (cant find the 740) and that seems to have an optical audio input. you will need to hook that up to your cable box, if you don't have a cable box to the optical output on your TV.

but honestly its pretty hard to give advice with so little info.
do you have a cable box? what model number? how is it hooked up to your TV? can you provide a link to the product page for your HTIB?

nope... found a better match for your model number (SC-HT740), it only has the analog inputs... no way to do 5.1 sound from an external source, sorry.

Am I wrong questioning how they can call this a "home theater sound system" when the only use for the 6 speakers, is from the built in DVD

By the way do you know what comes from the f/o audio output on the cable box. The cable box is a motorola DCT6416. Some people have told me that it isn't the full 5.1 information.

I have been told that if I were to run all the video through the TV and took the sound from the TV on the audio optical output to the A/V receiver, that it wouldn't be the same as running all the inputs though the A/V receiver and running one video output to the TV.

You can run an optical cable out of the back of your cable box to your av instead of running audio from your tv to your av. That will give you 5.1.

If his unit is indeed the SC-HT740, it only has one analog composite input - there aren't any digital optical or coaxial inputs. It is limited to surround from the internal DVD only.

There's no such term. These are merely analog audio inputs.

You're right, that was a mistake.

I don't think you'll get an answer. The OP hasn't posted in nearly two years.

It depends on if the Panasonic can apply something like Dolby ProLogicII to the TV's signal.

No.

so in addition to the HDMI I will also need a RCA from TV out in order to hear the fronts and sub. ?
