Samsung Luxia 8000 or 950?

Thread Starter
Should I wait for the 8000 series or go with the 950 series? The 8000 has the 240hz and the 950 has 120hz refresh rate. The 950 is local dimming LEDs and the 8000 is edge lit LED technology. Correct me if I am wrong. Not sure which to get yet and any help or input is appreciated. Thanks.

The only difference between the 8000 and the 7000 is 240hz which won't mean much. Here is a big thread that considers local versus edge-lit

Isn't there suppose to be a 9000 series as a replacement for the 950 later summer/early fall?
IMO I think the edge lit LCDs are only gonna be here until the Local Dimming becomes more cost effective to the maker and lower price to the consumer. I think the Edge Lit is eventually gonna replace the lower end TVs and Local Dimming will be the high end.

I just got back from Bestbuy. The sales guy there told me the Samsung rep told him that this summer there will be a replacement for the A950 with local dimming. He didn't give me a model number though

I think that's the Samsung 9000.

Yep. It will be 240 hz with more local dimming zones than the 950 which has 9, I believe. It should have higher contrast also

Yes, but would it have the sexy look of the present Luxias or would it be 3 inches thick? I'm not gonna wait

if colors and black levels look better , then 7100, or 8100, otherwise go cheaper lol

The 950 is actually over 4 inches deep.

I guess the 9000 release will follow year's 950 release date of Aug/Sept.

I'm assuming they'll slim down the 9000 from last years 4" - but I don't think it will be as thin as the 6/7/8000 if it has local dimming. I won't wait 4-5 months to find out, the 8k is good enough for me.

BTW, someone posted link to Samsung's spec for the new TVs. The 8000 is 2ms vs 4ms for the 7x00 - that's pretty significant, apart from the 240Hz

I would hope it would be thin like the 6000, 7000. LG is coming out with their LHX probably around the same time as the 9000 and theirs will actually be a little thinner than the Samsung luxia's and it is supposed to have local dimming with something like 200-250 dimmable zones. I believe it's the LG LHX model. I think it won the CES 09 technical award for TV's or something like that. I would expect the Samsung 9000 to be pretty slim or I will be disappointed.

Samsung rep told me Monday, 6 22 09, that the 9000 will be wireless and thin. Will use the same LED board as the 950.
So aside from it being wireless and thin, is there any real improvement?
That is enough improvement for me. That picture (950) is amazing!

We hear that there is also going to be an intermediate set as well, the 8500. This will be local dimming as well and bridge the gap between the 8000 and 9000. Since the 9000 is wireless I am speculating that the 8500 will not be. There hasn't been any official confirmation from Samsung but that is the rumor from a few insiders.

I would choose the A950.

Furthermore, I would pick local-dimming over edge-lit.

There are some good deals available on the A950 right now because it's nearing the end of it's product cycle, and it's successor (9000) will be here soon. Of course, you could wait for the 9000 itself, but expect to pay the full retail price for it since it will be a brand new model.

you mean "Will use the same LED board as the 950. . .

...as in will use the same exact LED backlight array with the same number of LEDs and the same number of controllable zones ?

OR
...as in will use the same type of LED backlight array, which would leave open the possibility of an increase in both the number of LEDs and the number of controllable, dimmable zones ?

the latter seems more likely to me, otherwise the B9000, and the B8500, will offer little to no advancement, and that would be a step backwards for samsung which is out to lead in the LED backlight category. they also would not be able to continue to command top of the line pricing with a warmed over offering.

Agreed. Makes no sense that the 8500 would use the same board as the A950. Otherwise, there would be no difference that we know of, between the two, since the 8500 is likley thicker than the 9000.

Well, now that some specs have been released for the 8500.. what's the consensus vs the A950? Does the 950 have the dlna client like the new series?

I've been looking forward to the 8500.. but at ~4500 vs ~3000.. I'd gladly "settle" for the A950.

I wouldn't call the specs listed on some sellers website definitive just yet.

950 over 8000 for sure. Better blacks, contrast, and color uniformaity across the screen.
I here the the edge lighted versus still can produce a bit of clouding effect.

Also I have seen some of the wireless TVs in action and I wouldn't have one. That can have a problem with picture freeze due to loss of signal.

I understand that the specs aren't publicly final by any means. But the 8500 looks to be the proper "next step" from the A950..
