Clearing Things Up at Jimmy Kimmel Live'
March 29, 2009 8:00 PM

Another one of the late-night warriors is going high-def. Jimmy Kimmel Live will begin broadcasting in HD on Tuesday, April 14, Blink has learned. It joins all of NBC's late-night shows, as well as CBS' Late Show With David Letterman, in making the transition to digital broadcasting. Kimmel's lead-in, the ABC News-produced Nightline, jumped to HD last year. ABC's move leaves CBS' Late, Late Show With Craig Ferguson as the only network late-night show that has not announced plans to switch to high definition. Given the competitive late-night landscape, as well as TV's overall trend toward embracing HD, Mr. Ferguson likely will be making the transition eventually. Most of ABC's primetime broadcasts are now in HD, as are news shows such as Good Morning, America and 20/20 and the daytime talk show The View.

Sweet! I'll check this out.

Oh please Jimmy, please don't have Guillermo or Uncle Frank shirtless on the show's high-def premiere! You're trying to get viewers, not send them running for the hills in shrieking horror! And no close-ups of Aunt Chipie while you're at it.

One problem, NBC's late night lineup is NOT all HD. Last Call is SDTV. Lately it has been shown 16:9 letterbox, even on the NBC HD channel. Only Jay and Jimmy F. are HD.

I think it's hilarious that, in the spur of writing his blog post, the TV Week writer didn't even thought of or included "Last Call" in his mental process of sorting out the late night talkers' HD status. Technically the poker show that follows Carson Daly at 2:05AM is also part of NBC late night and still in SD. Realistically though when people think of NBC late night their thought process stops at Jimmy Fallon (if they even include him at all; for most people Leno IS NBC late night).

NBC's website continues to list Carson Daly's show as HD even though its not.

I think that's it. Carson and that poker show are so obscure, even an entertainment writer forgets that they exist in 'late night'!

I miss the 2:05 Leno replay. At least that was an extra hour of HD each day.

The Tonight Show replay still occurs an hour later at 3:00am. But we did lose the Late Night replay that used to run at 3:00am.

What's the point of Kimmel in HD? His idea of comedy is showing low-res crap he pulled off of YouTube.
Michelle Rodriguez, and her dress, would have been much more appreciated on last night's show if aired in HD.

10,000 times better than Leno's corny monologue.

And Letterman's "I'm so bitter" monologue.

Not as good as Ferguson's monologues!
But vastly superior to Fallon's dead-on-arrival monologues ('Slow Jamming the News' notwithstanding).

The first time I sat through Fallon's monologue I had a face like the people on The Ring after they watched the tape.

They made fun of Jimmy Kimmel in HD on South Park before he went HD.

I'm not sure what night the HD starts, the Monday night (early Tuesday) or the Tuesday night (early Wednesday)?

I checked my IPG on my TWC box and the Tuesday night edition is marked as NEW with the latest DWTS castoff appearing. The Monday night edition appears to be a rerun.

What is his schedule, officially?

What did they make fun of?

His blatant, sickening kissing up to the guests? His penchant for having on boring, uneducated, illiterate musical artists? His nepotism? His obnoxiously untalented girlfriend? His slurry, spitting speech and slightly-crossed eyes? His paunch?

Just wondering, because I really think he and his show are just absolutely perfect.

(Actually I don't dislike the guy, and I'm just having fun. The only thing that stops me from watching his show sometimes are the "boring, illiterate guests". I do like the "Cousin Jimmy" skits a lot, though.)

I guess he still couldn't further her career any, no matter how hard he tried.

Explains why he hasn't had her on once every two weeks, anyway.

Oh, I'm sorry. Perhaps I should be nicer to her. Have you ever heard her act?
