Intresting Anecdotal Experiance at Costco

Thread Starter
Just came out of a Costco in the Phoenix area. Looks like they are phasing out all the DVD players, They had seven Blu players all listed as Blu-ray / DVD players, and 1 DVD / VHS combo unit, No standalone DVD units to be found. Looks like they are trying to direct the consumers to blu by informing them the a blu player will play DVD's and Blu, and removing the option to buy a standalone DVD player. I have to check my local store to see if this is across the country or just locally here. It is however a pretty interesting sight, and good if it is across the board as increases the number of players out there. Hopefully there is some education that goes along with the purchase.

That's cool! I'll have to remember to check out the situation at my local Costco the next time I go.

Costo.com is seems to be the same way BTW, only a couple of BD players, 2 portable DVD players, and a DVD/VCR combo are now listed under "DVD Players". So no stand-alone normal DVD players

I'm guessing that's area specific. I'm in the Costco home state, and they are not doing that. They have 2-4 DVD players at my Costco and one Blu-ray player (Sammy BDP1500 I think). I wouldn't tell my enemies to get a BD1500, based on all the reviews and feedback I've read.

If they did something like that I'm sure it's probably because they don't sell many dvd players anymore and the somewhat higher profit margins of BD players is contributing to that. Who knows probably anecdotal at best right now.

All about profit margins and Costco being a low price leader. If your dealing with a dvd player that is 50 at walmart and 48 at costco because of the lack of margin it makes sense not to compete in that arena.

Just noticed costco.com now lists the new Sharp BD-HP16U which is BD Live and internally decodes all audio formats.
