Couldn't he dump these to do Hobbit? Of course the real reason he left is not public yet
Rhetorical below.....
A few of his projects in development,
Frankenstein
Why do we need another one?
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Why do we need another one?
Pinocchio
Why do we need another one?
While I agree with the "why" in terms of these remakes, I imagine since he is....you know, a film maker by trade, GDT would like to actually be actively working as opposed to sitting on his hands waiting for the powers that be to sort out the Hobbit mess. These are projects GDT is excited about - and he may well give new & awesome twists to these oft-remade oldies.
I mean, did Ridley Scott REALLY need to make another Robin Hood flick, esp since he was really just sorta remaking Gladiator w/ different costumes & backdrops?
In the end, this may be a blessing in disguise for LOTR fans. While GDT is/was a solid choice for this material, it really SHOULD be Jackson helming these. And it sounds now like he may do just that.
But I'm speaking more to the fact that there are so many other stories to be told. Why rehash old stuff. Not sure what's a bigger waste of his time...waiting for the Hobbit mess to be sorted out or redoing stories that we've all heard/seen/etc.
He might as well go home and clean out the garage.
If he does find that old tape with Karloff maybe he'll wise up and leave it alone.
Maybe while cleaning his garage he'll find some old sci-fi paperbacks and say screw the garage....I need to read "Time Patrol" again.
....and then a spark....not the incendiary kind....but the idea kind....
Hollywood is very risk averse most of the time. They probably pushed GDT out of the Hobbit as they're all warm/fuzzy with PJ and GDT seemed like a risk to them.
The most recent reports regarding GDT & The Hobbitt had Jackson stating that if need be, he would consider directing them. And from the language used, it sounds like he would step in @ WB's behest unless another director is found.

MGM is certainly averse to risk - considering they are financially deep in a hole. They even had to shelve the next Bond movie for the time being.
Hobbit, though, looks to be a joint effort between MGM & New Line (now simply Warner Bros).
Still, even though he's going through the motions, according to that article it appears MGM is reluctant to give up the rights to the movie to Warner. So the movie is still far from being made.
Lol. You can't fool me, Frank. You'll be camping out overnight, waiting to buy a ticket in full Hobbit costume, yelling gimme my 3D glasses or gimme death!
