Best route to take??

I own a 40 gig PS3 which is quickly running out of HD space. I also wirelessly stream media content from my PC connected via Tversity, but my PC has very low(Dinosaur Dell Dimension) HD space so I can't store many movie/music files there. Would the PS3 be able to stream media from an external HD connected to the PC or maybe play directly using one of the USB ports on the front? Streaming media is a big thing for me, so thats why replacing the PS3 hard drive isn't first and foremost.

Any and all help appreciated,

Fatboy

Why not upgrade the HD in the Dell, or put a second internal drive in it?

Open up your PC case and see if you have room for another hard drive. If the Dell supports SATA (how old are we talking?) you can get a 1TB drive for under $100.

I was thinking of this, but I have never installed any hardware into my PC, is it difficult to do? Its a Dell Dimension 2400 and I've had it about 9 years. After doing some research I found that my PC will only support up to an 80-100 hard drive.

I have a 250 GB external that I use hooked directly to my PS3.

External drive hooked to PS3 = no files over 4gb.

If you don't want to get into your case (and a lot of Dell cases are a PITA anyway), just get an external enclosure. I think your best bet might be a Themaltake BlacX which is a dock that will take either 2.5" or 3.5" SATA drives and connect to your PC by either eSATA or USB. You can use any size drive you want and hot swap. They are virtually silent and the drive isn't encased, so heat isn't a problem. I've got a couple of them and they're a perfect solution for backup, extra storage and versatility since they can be moved easily to any other PC. Even if you don't need the eSATA port now, you'll be ready when you upgrade.

Check them out here at NewEgg.

Thanks alot, I think I may do this. Will I still be able to stream media directly from it when connected to my PC, because usually I can only see the files on my PS3 that are on my PC internally when streaming.

Thanks for all the help guys....

It won't be any different than any other drive in your system. What's nice is you can turn it off and then back on when you need it or even swap another drive in it at any time.
